(Il.) - ἅψις `handling' (Hp.); ἅψος n. `join', pl. `joints' (Od.; Chantr. Form. 421); ἅμμα `noose, cord' (Hp.) - ἁψίς, - ῖδος f. `loop, mesh'- Perhaps also ἄφθα, αὑαψή, χορδαψός s.s.vv.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Unknown. Cf. Kretschmers Glotta 7, 352. Wrong Pisani Ist. Lomb. 73: 2, 28 (from *ἅπϜω to Av. āfǝnte). vW. connects ἰάπτω. Szemerényi Gnomon 43 (1971) 656 connects `fasten' with Lat. apiō and `kindle' with Gm. sengen, OCS prě-sǫčiti `dry' from * senkʷ-. 29 δοκός
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `bearing-beam' (Il.).Other forms: late also m.Derivatives: δοκίς (Hp.), δοκίον (Arist., Delos IVa), δοκίδιον (Harp.). - δοκίας (Phlp.), δοκεύς (Heph. Astr.) name of a comete (like δοκός, δοκίς; Scherer Gestirnnamen 107). - δοκώδης `like a beam' (gloss.). - δοκόομαι `be fitted with beams' (Pap., S. E.) with δόκωσις (LXX). - From δοκός also δόκανα n. pl. name of two upricht beams constructed with a cross-beam (Plu.), δοκάναι αἱ στάλικες, αἷς ἵσταται τὰ λίνα, η κάλαμοι H., i. e. `beams for hunting-nets'; cf. names in - ανον, - άνη in Schwyzer 489f., Chantr. Form. 198f.Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]Etymology: To δέκομαι as agent noun, so "who\/which takes over (the covering)". Benveniste, Rev. de phil. 58, 127, thinks that δοκός, δόκανα are Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 1,406Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > δοκός

30 ἐλθεῖν
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `come, go'.Dialectal forms: Dor. etc. ἐνθεῖν, s. v.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Because of their semantic and functional identitity ἤλυθον and ἦλθον can hardly be separated from each other. As ἤλυθον is limited to the epic and lyrics and has an acceptable IE etymology, it is generally regarded as the original form. In this view it seems best to take, with Johansson IF 8, 182, ἦλθον as a mix of ἤλυθον and ἦνθον (but see below). Thus Wackernagel Dehnungsgesetz 3 (= Kl. Schr. 2, 899) proposes to take ἦλθον as a reformation of ἤλυθον after *ἦρθον (to ἔρχομαι, s. v.). But Schulze Jagić-Festschrift 343 n. 1 (= Kl. Schr. 75 n. 1) thinks that ἦλθον arose from ἤλυθον as the υ-vowel was `absorbed' by the velar λ, a theory which is difficult to accept. Szemerényi, Syncope 3, takes ἐλθεῖν as syncope. - ἐνθεῖν is regarded by DELG as a dialectal development. - The word has also been connected with Skt. ádhvan- `road', Av. aδβan- (*h₁n̥dh-u̯en-).Page in Frisk: 1,494Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἐλθεῖν

Merc. 487; on the accent-shift Schwyzer 618), - ον ( κοτέουσα A. R. 4, 1672).Derivatives: With archaising suppression of the prefix ζάφελος (Nic. Al. 556, EM), ζαφελές, - ῶς (H.), - ής (Suid.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Expressive word without etymology. ζα- is prob. the Aeolic form of δια-; further unclear. Not better Strömberg Prefix Studies 89. - Fur. 176 suggests connection with ζάψ `surf', and takes it as Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 1,536-537Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἐπιζάφελος

32 μῠδάω
μῠδάωGrammatical information: v.Meaning: `be damp, deteriorate by dampness' (Ion. poet., Plb.)Derivatives: μῡδ-αλέος ( δια- μῠδάω A. in lyr.) `wet, dripping' (since Λ 54), - αλόεις `id.' (AP); μῠ́δος m. `wetness, putrefaction' (Nic.) with μυδόεις = μυδαλέος (Nic.), μυδών, - ῶνος m. `putrefaction of an ulcer' (Poll.). ( δια-)μύδησις `id.' (medic.), μῡδαίνω, also with δια-, `moisten, make wet' (A. R., Nic.). -- To μύδρος, which may be cognate, and μύζω `suck', which was wrongly connected, s. v.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Whether the late and rare μύδος must be sonsidered as the basis of the Greek group, may be doubted, s. below. As basis of the early attested μυδαλέος (as ἰκμαλέος, ἀζαλέος a.o.) may have served both a verb and a noun (cf. Debrunner IF 23, 5, Chantraine Form. 253 f.); beside this adj. with metr. lengthened (?) ῡ there was (after αὑαλέος: αὑαίνω ets.) μυδαίνω with analogical (?) long vowel (Schulze Q. 169 ff.). μυδάω too is ambiguous; it can be a denomin. of μύδος, but it can be understood as well as a deverbative formation (cf. Schwyzer 719, also 682 on μαδάω); then μύδος would be a late backformation. -- The comparable non-Greek words do not clarify the situation: Lith. máudyti `bathe' (full grade iterative, prob. with secondary d to Latv. maût `submerge, swim'); Skt. mudira- m. `cloud' (class.), also `frog' and `lover' (lex.); in all meanings prob. from múd- f. `lust, joy', módate `be gay'. The meaning makes the connection with μυδάω rather doubtful; one compares mádati also `be gay' beside μαδάω (s.v.). Further from Germ. Dutch mot `fine rain' a.o. -- WP. 2, 250f., Pok. 741 f., Fraenkel s. maudà, máudyti, mudà, Vasmer s. múslitь, W.-Hofmann s. 1. mundus; many more forms and lit. Cf. μύσος and μυλάσασθαι. - IE connection is uncertain. Lith. mudrùs `lively' cannot have IE * mud- which would have given a long ū (so it must have been * mudh-). Fur. 249f., 259 connects μύσος and takes δ\/σ as Pre-Greek. The variation of the length can also be Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,263Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μῠδάω

Heubeck Beitr. z. Namenforsch. 1, 271.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Because of the sound-similarity and the semantic proximity μύρτος, μύρρα, μυρίκη are usually with Lewy Fremdw. 42ff. (s. esp. Heubeck 282 w. further hypotheses) without further argumentation considered as cognate Semit. LW [loanword]. Rejected bu Schrader-Nehring Reallex. 2, 97, where μύρρα is dismissed and also μύρτος and μυρίκη are kept together only with reserve. -- From μύρτος, - ον Lat. murtus, -um as well as Arm. murt, NPers. mūrd. - The variation μυρτ-\/ μυρσ- ( μυρρ-?) clearly points to a Pre-Greek word; Fur. 259. Semitic origin is rejected by DELG. Heubeck (l.c.) takes the group as from Asia Minor, which does not exclude that it is Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,274-275Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μύρτος

Matth.); 9. νυμφάσματα n. pl. `bride's ornaments' (Orac.; prob. after ὑφάσματα freely formed; hardly with Thomas [s. Kretschmer Glotta 6, 307] haplological from *νυμφ-υφάσματα) ; 10. Νυμφασία f. Arcad. source, s. Krahe Beitr. z. Namenforsch. 2, 237 a. 3, 162 (cf. below against Kretschmer). -- B. Verbs 1. νυμφεύω `give in marriage, marry', pass. `be wedded' (Pi., S., E.) with νυμφεύματα n. pl. `marriage' (S., E.), sg. personified `bride' (S.; Chantraine Form. 186), νύμφευσις f. `marriage' (LXX); νυμφευ-τής m. `bridegroom' (E.) `groomsman' (Poll.), - τήρ `bridegroom, husband' (Opp.; Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 135), f. - τρια `bridesmaid' (Ar., Plu.), - τήριος `bridal', τὰ ν. `marriage' (E.). -- 2. νυμφ-ιάω `be in a frenzy', of a mare (Arist.; after the verbs of disease in - ιάω, Schwyzer 732).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Unexplained. After Kretschmer Glotta 1, 325 ff. as `beloved, lover(ess)' to Lat. nūbō `marry' (prop. of the woman), OCS snubiti `love, court', IE * sneubh-. Also Meringer WuS 5, 167 ff. connects νύμφη with nūbō etc., but as `cover', as he takes, with Wiedemann, Wackernagel a. o., nūbō as `cover oneself' (cf. ob-nūbō); rejected by Kretschmer Glotta 7, 354. The inner nasal in νύμφη is then unexplained; failed attempts with mechanical root-analysis by Specht Ursprung 268 a. 282. Glottogonic speculations without interest are also mentioned by W.-Hofmann s. nūbō. For protidg.-pelasg. origin from the name of a source Νυμφασία Kretschmer Glotta 28, 273 (against this Krahe, s.a.). - Clearly a Pre-Greek word (not in Fur.). So prob. wrong Pok. 978. The nasal could be prenasalization. The voc. in -α may be the old nom. (Beekes, Pre-Greek endings).Page in Frisk: 2,Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > νύμφη

35 πτίλον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `fluff, soft feather, down, insect wing', metaph. `leaf etc.' (IA.).Compounds: Some compp., e.g. πτιλό-νωτος `with a fluffy back' (AP), τετρά-πτιλος `with four fluff-feathers' (Ar.).Derivatives: 1. πτιλ-ωτός `provided with πτίλα' (Arist., Att. inscr.); 2. - όομαι, - όω `to be equipped with πτ. esp. to equip with πτ.' (late) with - ωσις f. `fluff-forming' (Ael.), also of a disease of the eyelid and -lashes (Gal.); to this as backformation πτίλος `disease of the eyelids' (LXX, Gal. a.o.) and with expressive gemination πτίλλος = lippus (Gloss.); to be rejeced Güntert Reimwortbildungen 125 f.; 3. - ώσσω `to have a disease of the eyelids (lashes)' (Archyt.; Schwyzer 733).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Like πτερόν, πτέρυξ (s. vv.) from πτ-έσθαι, w. hypocoristic ιλο-suffix (Chantraine Form. 248 f., Schwyzer 485; diff. Specht Ursprung 157 a. 164). Far remain both πταίω (s.v.) and Lat. pĭlus `hair' and vespertīliō `bat' (s. W.-Hofmann s.v.). -- On Dor. ψίλον (Paus. 3, 19,6) s. Bechtel Dial. 2, 319f. -- Furnée 263 takes πτίλον - ψίλον as evidence for a Pre-Greek word. He adds to the cognate forms also Lat. pilus. 36 συαγρίς
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `toothed fish'(?) (Epich. 69, Arist., H.).Derivatives: Cf. συνοδοντίς as fishname (Strömberg 45) and κρεαγρίς, παναγρίς, governing compound to ἀγρεύω, ἄγρα; the v. l. συαγρίς after σύαγρος (s. on σῦς); this is rather improbable. Ngr. συνακρίδα; on this also Thumb ClassQuart. 8, 193.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Furnée 123f. starts from σύαξ, - κος, συάκιον n. (Su.); συάκιν (gloss.) `kind of flatfish'. He takes συναγρίς (Arist.) rather as folketymol. for the form without nasal. The word will then be Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,820Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > συαγρίς

(appellative) meaning is unknown, only hypotheses are possible. Purely formal (cf.
