11 λορδός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `with the upper part of the body bent backwards, with inward bent back', also sens. obsc., opposite κυφός (Hp., Arist.).Derivatives: Λόρδων, - ωνος m. name of a demon (Pl. Com. 174, 17, beside Κύβδασος from κύβδα); λορδόομαι, - όω `bend inward' (Hp., com.) with λόρδ-ωσις, - ωμα `curvature of the spine inward' (Hp., Gal.), oppos. κύφ-ωσις, - ωμα; also λορδαίνω = - όω (Hp.).Etymology: Isolated in Greek. One supposes cognates in Armenian, but also in Celtic and Germanic. Semantically agrees Arm. lorc̣-k` pl. (i-st.) = ὀπισθότονοι (Pl. Ti. 84e), i.e. `spasmodic curvature of the upper body inward' (cf. λόρδωσις, - ωμα above); but lorc̣-k` must be derived from IE * lor(d)- sk-(i)-. An agreeing formation may be found in Celt. (Gael.) loirc f. `deformed foot', which admits also an IE basis * lor(d)- sk-ā. Further we have, without sk- suffix and in ablaut deviant, MHG lerz, lurz `left\/link' (prop. `crooked', cf. lürzen `deceive' = MEngl. bi-lurten `id.'), IE * lerd-, *lr̥d-. - Bq s. v., WP. 2, 439, Pok. 679 (nach Fick 1, 538 u. 3, 364, Lidén Armen. Stud. 46f.).Page in Frisk: 2,137Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λορδός

12 πελιδνός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `blue, dark color, lurid, bloodshot' (Hp., Arist., Nic.; also Th. a. com.?; s. bel.)Other forms: Beside it πελιτνός, by gramm. identified as Att., so to be restored in Th. 2, 49, Alex. 110, 17 ?Derivatives: Enlarged πελιδν-ήεις (Marc. Sid.), - αῖος (Nonn.). From it - ότης f. `blue stain' (Aret., Gal.), - όομαι `to become blue etc.' (Hp., Arist.) with - ωμα, - ωσις (medic.). -- Also πελιός `id.' (Hp., D., Thphr., Nic. a.o.; on the meaning Capelle RhM 101, 38ff.) with πελι-ώδης (sch.), - ότης f. (medic.). - όομαι (Hellanic., Hp., LXX), from where - ωσις, - ωμα (medic., sch.), - αίνομαι (Hp.); πελλος ( πέλλος?) `id.' (S. Fr.?, Arist., Theoc. a.o.) with -ᾱ̃ς m. `an old person, very old man' (Hdn., H.). With γ-enlargement πελιγόνες m. pl. = γέροντες (Lac., Massal.), = οἱ ἐν τιμαῖς (Maced.; after Str. 7 Fr. 2); πελιγᾶνες οἱ ἔνδοξοι. παρὰ δε Σύροις οἱ βουλευταί H. -- Also Πέλ-οψ (Kretschmer Glotta 27, 5 a. 28, 236f.)?; quite uncertain.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Built like ὀπιδνός, ἀλαπαδνός, ὀλοφυδνός a.o., either as enlargement of πελιός or as transformation of the older πελιτνός, which has the same orig. only fem. suffix combination as Skt. páliknī f. from * pali-t-n-ī `grey' beside m. pali-t-á- (= Gr. *πελιτός; from there πελιτ-νός after the fem.?). If one sparates the t-suffix (cf. Skt. hári-, hári-t-a- `greenyellow, sallow'; s. χλόη, χλωρός) we arrive at an i-stem, which seems also retained in πελιός (prob. for *πελι-Ϝό-ς; cf. on πολιός), πελι-γόνες, - γᾶνες, perhaps also in πελλός (if from *πελι̯ός). But the last can also stand for *πελ-νός, for which esp. πιλνόν φαιόν H. (with restored - λν-) seems to speak(?). Still a different formation is shown by πέλεια, perh. also πελαργός (?; s. vv.). -- WP. 2, 53f., Pok. 804f., W.-Hofmann s. palleō w. rich lit. On the stemformation (partly hypothetical) Specht Ursprung 117, 187, 194. -- Cf. πολιός w. further connections. The forms in - δνος and those with - γ- rather suggest a Pre-Greek word (note also the deviant πιλνός).Page in Frisk: 2,498Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πελιδνός

13 πλαδαρός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `damp, watery, spongy, soft, flaccid, tasteless' (Hp., A. R., Dsc.).Derivatives: πλαδαρ-ότης f. `flaccidity' (Epicur.), - όομαι `to become soft' (Aq.), - ωσις f. (medic.), - ωμα n. (Suid.). Besides πλαδάω `to be watery, soft' (Hp., Arist., Ph.) with - ησις f. (Sor.); also - ωσις f. (Aët.) as from *-όω; πλάδος m. `dampness, sponginess' with - ώδης (Hp.), - όεις (sch.); πλάδη f. `id.' (Emp.), perh. backformation from πλαδάω.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Expressive words, to be found esp. in the medic. lit.. With πλαδ-αρός: - άω: - ος agree the semantically close rhiming words κλαδ-αρός: - άω: - ος, μαδ-αρός: - άω: - ος; thus ῥυπ-αρός: - άω: - ος a.o.; s. Chantraine Form. 227. The genetic relation of these forms remains unclear; cf. on κραδάω, κράδη. -- No agreements outside Greek; formally closest is a Balt. verb for `swim', e.g. Lith. példu (példžiu), peldė́ti. If on separates the d (cf. κλαδαρός: κλάω (?)) one may connect expressions for `pour, spill etc.' in Lith. pilù pìlti (with zero grade) and Arm. heɫum (* pel-nu-mi) a.o.; s. WP. 2, 54f. a. 66, Pok. 798f., Fraenkel s. vv. Earlier, dated attempts in Bq (also Specht Ursprung 171 a. 228). -- (Not to πλέω, πολύς). - The word can hardly be IE; is it Pre-Greek?Page in Frisk: 2,547-548Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πλαδαρός

14 ῥῡσός
ῥῡσόςGrammatical information: adj.Meaning: `shrivelled, shrunk, wrinkled' (I 503).Derivatives: 1. ῥυσ-αλέος `id.' (Nic.; αὑαλέος a.o.); 2. - ώδης `with a wrinkled appearance' (AP a.o.); 3. - ότης f. `wrinkledness' (Plu.); 4. ῥυσίλλας τὰς ῥυτίδας H. (diminutive-hypocoristic; cf. Chantraine Form. 252, Schwyzer 485); 5. ῥυσ-όομαι, - όω `to shrivel, to wrinkle (oneself)' (Arist.) with - ωσις f. (Gal.); 6. - αίνομαι `id.' (Nic., AP). -- ῥῠτίς, - ίδος f. (Aeol. βρύτιδες EM) `wrinkle, fold' (Ar., Pl.) with ῥυτιδ-ώδης = ῥυσώδης, - όομαι, - όω = ῥυσόομαι, - όω (Hp., Arist.), - ωσις f. `wrinkling' (medic.), - ωμα n. `wrinkle' (sch.). Prob. also ῥυτίσματα pl. (Men.: *ῥυτίζω), after Phot. = τῶν διερρυηκότων ἱματίων τὰ ἀποπληρώματα (`patch, piece of cloth').Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: With ῥυσός cf. λοξός, κομψός, γαυσός and many other adj. in - σός (Chantraine Form. 434, Études 17. Schwyzer 516, Stang Symb. Oslo. 23, 46, Specht Ursprung 200); ῥυτίς like πηκτίς, ξυστίς, δοκίς etc.; from *ῥυ-τή, - τόν v.t. -- Prob. like ῥυτήρ `vein' etc. to ἐρύω `draw, pull, snatch' (s.v.), so prop. *'drawn, distorted, pulled' etc. (Solmsen IF 31, 463) (for the meaning cf. ῥάκη, also `wrinkels') - but then we would have *ἐρυσος. The similarity with Lat. rūga `wrinkle, fold', Lith. raũkas `id.' is accidental; cf. W.-Hofmann and Fraenkel s.vv. S. also Bechtel Lex. s. ῥυσός.Page in Frisk: 2,666-667Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ῥῡσός
