Название Integrated Services Digital Network можно трактовать двояко. С одной стороны, это "цифровая сеть комплексных услуг", значительно расширяющая функциональность телефонной связи по сравнению с обычным телефоном. С другой стороны, это "цифровая сеть интегрального обслуживания" с гарантированной пропускной способностью между абонентами и минимальной задержкой сигнала, в отличие от применяемого в Интернете дифференциального обслуживания, основанного на приоритизации (дифференциации) трафика.
Работа в цифровой телефонной сети похожа на пользование обычным телефоном, с той лишь разницей, что голосовые данные оцифровываются в 64‑кбит/с поток ещё на стороне абонента и в неизменной форме доходят до адресата. Соответственно, для передачи цифровых данных нужен не сложный модем, а просто некий адаптер цифровой сети. (Вот только цены на эти "просто адаптеры" такие, что иногда дешевле купить несколько модемов.) Набор номера тоже производится цифровым способом, поэтому дозвон до провайдера и установление соединения занимает пару секунд.

Новейшее поколение телефонных сетей, использующее скорость передачи в 64 кбит/с (поскольку сеть цифровая, она характеризуется не полосой пропускания сигнала в кГц, а скоростью передачи). Это гораздо быстрее, чем обычная телефонная линия PSTN (коммутируемая телефонная сеть общего пользования). Чтобы воспользоваться сетью ISDN, нужно обратиться к провайдеру коммуникационных услуг, кроме того, требуется специальный набор интерфейсных элементов (вроде модемов).

асинхронная последовательная коммуникационная шина, использующая в качестве среды передачи витую пару проводов и ориентированная прежде всего на объединение различных исполнительных устройств и датчиков. Протокол был предложен фирмой Robert Bosch GmbH в конце 1980-х годов для автомобильной промышленности, т. е. для надёжной работы систем реального времени в условиях с повышенными уровнями электрических помех (бортовая сеть автомашины), затем он был стандартизован ISO (ISO 11898) и Ассоциацией SAE. Протокол CAN реализует первый и второй уровень эталонной модели OSI. Режим передачи - последовательный, широковещательный, пакетный. При скорости передачи 1 Мбит/с длина шины может достигать 40 метров. При меньших скоростях длину можно увеличить до километра. В настоящее время сети на основе протокола CAN распространены также в промышленной автоматизации, технологиях "умного дома" и других областях. На рынке CAN присутствует в двух версиях: версия А задаёт 11-битовую идентификацию сообщений (т. е. в системе может быть 2048 сообщений), версия В - 29-битовую (536 миллионов сообщений).
