Según el diccionario yoruba de Oxford, batá es un tambor usado por los fieles de Changó y de Egungun. "La orquesta lucumí o es la de los batá o la de los ágbe o chekeré. Tambor! Piel! Cuero! Piedra de santo. Piedra pequeña, rara vez mayor que una toronja, y, generalmente del tamaño del puño o menor; la cual fué encontrada en la tierra por medios adivinatorios o mediamnímicos, como residencia o más bien personificación de un dios o diosa determinada, por lo que es objeto de adoración. En Cuba abundan los "otá" que son hachas de las culturas de piedras pertenecientes a los indocubanos. El africano y sus descendientes en Regla de Ocha han creído que tales piedras vinieron del cielo; eso es lo que se acepta en cuanto a los respectivos otanes de Changó y Oyá. Recogidos esos otanes. son sometidos a un complejo ritual de habilitación. El estudio de los otanes, como el de los elekes. constituirían interesantísimas monografías. El otá de Changó se llama oddú ará y es cierta piedra que él tiró una vez. Esta piedra, como la de Oyá, son las llamadas piedras de rayos y se admite que una y otra aparecen en los lugares donde han caído rayos de Chanqó y de Oyá. Esas piedras son sometidas a una investigación de oráculo para saber qué se ha de hacer con ella. Después se lava en omiero, se engrasa de etá orí, se le da comida y se destina a iré o imagen del orísha. Los otanes de los demás oríshas pueden ser recogidos, todos, entre las piedras que el mar echa a sus playas, pero no siempre así se recogen, pues las sabanas, lomas, ríos, despeñaderos y caminos también son naturaleza suministradora. En el caso del otá de Olokun, siempre ha de ser piedra de mar puesta en tinaja. Olofi, Olodumare y Orúmbila, no tienen otá para iré o representación. El estudio de los otanes es de lo más sugestivo y daría mucha oportunidad para conocer las representaciones religiosas. El "otá" no es el orísha ni la adoración es a la piedra, pero los negros nunca han tenido interés en ilustrar a los aleyos y a veces a los propios iniciados novatos de lo que exactamente sucede. Así como el crucifijo no es Jesús Cristo, el otá no es el orísa, pero lo representa por continencia o por residencia. El orísha es siempre un espíritu de ciertas características fijas. Para cada orísha hay muchos espíritus que lo representen. Cada hijo de santo que muere vuelve alguna vez al ilé de algún creyente como el mismo orísha que tenía asentado o como quien fue en vida. Lo que sucede es que existe una categoría o mejor, varias, de espíritus de personas que tuvieron Ocha y después de muertos se manifiestan como oríshas. Los negros no adoran a los astros, minerales, vegetales y animales como tales, sino que admiten que en tales seres hay ciertos poderes que ellos pueden usar. Aprender a usar esos poderes o achés implica conocer y ajustarse al saber, que ciertos pueblos africanos acumularon y organizaron en la religión de un tronco de cultura.
