, 15 (iv B. C.):—modal Particle used with Verbs to indicate that the action is limited by circumstances or defined by conditions. In Hom. κε is four times as common as ἄν, in Lyr. about equally common. No clear distinction can be traced, but κε as an enclitic is somewhat less emphatic; ἄν is preferred by Hom. in negative clauses, κε ([etym.] ν) with the relative.A In Simple Sentences, and in the Apodosis of Compound Sentences; here ἄν belongs to the Verb, and denotes that the assertion made by the Verb is dependent on a condition, expressed or implied: thus ἦλθεν he came, ἦλθεν ἄν he would have come (under conditions, which may or may not be defined), and so he might have come; ἔλθοι may he come, ἔλθοι ἄν he would come (under certain conditions), and so he might come.I WITH INDICATIVE:1 with historical tenses, generally [tense] impf. and [tense] aor., less freq. The [tense] impf. with ἄν refers to continued action, in Hom. always in past time, exc. perh. . 178; later also in [tense] pres. time, first in Thgn.905; πολὺ ἂν θαυμαστότερον ἦν, εἰ ἐτιμῶντο it would be far more strange if they were honoured, Pl.R. 489a; οὐκ ἂν νήσων ἐκράτει, εἰ μή τι καὶ ναυτικὸν εἶχεν he would not have been master of islands if he had not had also some naval power, Th.1.9. 14 δέελος
Grammatical information: m.Etymology: Ruijgh, Lingua 25 (1970) 319 (s.v. δῆλος) thinks that the identification of δέελος with δῆλος is a mistake of ancient grammarians. Note that δέαλος could well have been used in this place. "the presence of τε after σῆμα obliges to see δέελον as a substantive." Hesychius gives the right form. It is derived from δέω `bind', with the suffix - ελο-, i.e. * deh₁-elo-. It could have meant (French) `lien'. (He also gives another possibility, which seems less probable to me.) Cf. also δῆλος.Page in Frisk: 1,354Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > δέελος

15 ἐπικάρσιος
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `transverse, crosswise, at a right angle' (ι 70, of ships, Hdt., Plb. etc.).Etymology: Also ἐγκάρσιος (Th.), after ἐναντίος ? Secondary simplex κάρσιον πλάγιον H., - ίως Suid. - Ultimately to κείρειν, ἐπικείρειν `cut' but in detail unclear. Strömberg Prefix Studies 92 starts from a verbal adjective *ἐπίκαρτος, from which ἐπικάρσιος like ἀμβρόσιος from ἄμβροτος (s. also on διπλάσιος); an σ-enlargement as in κορσόν κορμόν H., ἀ-κερσε-κόμης (s. also κόρση) seems also a possibility. - The general resemblance with Lith. sker̃sas `transverse', OPr. kirscha `over', Russ. čerez `through, over' can be explained as parallel formation from the root ( s)ker-t- `cut'. - Not from *ἐπὶ καρσί, plur. of ἐπὶ κάρ (Π 392) `on its head' (Bechtel Lex. s. v.).Page in Frisk: 1,537Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἐπικάρσιος

16 ἰπνός
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `furnace', also `kitchen' and `lantern' (IA),Dialectal forms: Myc. i-po-no;Derivatives: Diminut. ἰπνίον (medic.); ἰπνών (Delos IIIa), ἰπνιών (Gortyn) `kitchen'; ἰπνίτης ( ἄρτος) `in an oven baked bread' (Hp.; vgl. Redard Les noms grecs en - της 89); ἴπνιος `belonging to an oven', ἴπνια τὰ καθάρματα τοῦ ἰπνοῦ H. (Call. Fr. 216); ἰπνεύω `bake in an oven' (H.; hιπνε[ύεσθαι] IG 12, 4, 15) with ἰπνευτής furnarius ( Gloss.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: With ἰπνός, perh. from *ἱπνός (cf. Ἔφ-ιπνος and hιπνε[ύεσθαι] IG 12, 4, 15, which is not quite certain, agrees except for the anlaut a synonymous Westgerm. word, OE ofen, OHG ovan ` Ofen', also ONo. ofn, PGerm. * ofna- \< *úfna-. But these words cannot be combined. Also the forms with velar: Goth. auhns, OSwed. oghn, PGerm. * oχna-, * oʒna- \< *úχna-, *uʒná-. Nor is there any possibility to connect Skt. ukhá- m., ukhā́ f. `pot, cooking-pot' (or Lat. aulla `pot'). Cf. Pok. 88. Other proposal by B. 17 κίνδυνος
Grammatical information: m.Compounds: as 2. member e. g. in ἐπι-κίνδυνος `connected with danger' (IA.).Derivatives: κινδυνώδης `dangerous' (Hp., Plb.), κινδυνεύω `take (the) risk' (IA.) with κινδύνευμα `risk' (S., E., Pl.), - ευτής `dare-devil' (Th., D. C.; cf. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 73), - ευτικός `dangerous, adventurous' (Arist.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: No etymology. The formally attractive connection with κίνδαξ, ὀνο-κίνδιος (which does not belong to κινεῖν! s.s.v.) from Prellwitz Wb., Vendryes REGr. 25, 461f., who compare further Lat. solli-citus `be in danger') gives semantically only one theoretical possibility. Hypothetical is also the proposal by Schulzes (in Sittig KZ 52, 207f.; agreeing a. o. Schwyzer 335, Specht KZ 66, 5), that κίνδυνος is an old expression of the game of dices with assimilation for *κύν-δυ-νος, from κύων as designation of an unsuccesful throw (as Skt. śvan-, Lat. canis; cf. on Κανδαύλης) and a word for `dice, -game' in Skt. dī́vyati `dice', dyūtá- n. `-game'; both phonetically and morphologically doubtfull, s. Kretschmer KZ 55, 90f.; rejected by Kuiper Μνήμης χάριν 1, 217 n. 26. S. also Taillardat, REAnc. 1956, 189-194. Schwyzer 529f., Chantraine Formation 361): κλεηδών, - όνος f. (Od.), κληηδών (δ 312; metr. lengthening), κληδών (Hdt., trag.; contraction resp. adaptation to κλῄζω, κικλήσκω; s. below) `fame, (divine) pronouncement'; from it κληδόνιος (sch., Eust.), κληδονίζομαι, - ίζω (LXX) with - ισμα, - ισμός. - Denomin. verb: 1. κλείω (Il.), κλέω (B., trag. in lyr.) `celebrate, praise, proclaim', hell. also `call' (after κλῄζω, s. below), κλέομαι `enjoy fame, be celebrated' (Ω 202), hell. also `be called'; basis *κλεϜεσ-ι̯ω \> *κλε(Ϝ)έω, from where κλείω, κλέω; s. Wackernagel BphW 1891 Sp. 9; see Frisk GHÅ 56: 3 (1950) 3ff., where the possibility is discussed that κλέω (from where κλείω with metr. lengthening) is a backformation of κλέος after ψεύδω: ψεῦδος (thus Risch par. 31 a). Diff. e. g. Schulze Q. 281: κλείω denomin. from *κλεϜεσ-ι̯ω, but κλέω, κλέομαι old primary formation; diff. again Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 346 w. n. 3: κλέω primary, from where with metrical lengthening κλείω; further s. Frisk l. c. - From κλείω, κλέω as agent noun Κλειώ, Κλεώ, - οῦς f. "the one who gives fame", name of one of the Muses (Hdt., Pi.). - 2. κλεΐζω (Pi.; εὑκλεΐζω from εὑκλεής also Sapph., Tyrt.), κληΐζω (Hp., hell.), κλῄζω (Ar.), aor. κλεΐξαι resp. κληΐσαι, κλῃ̃σαι, κλεῖσαι, fut. κλεΐξω, κληΐσω, κλῄσω etc., `celebrate, praise, proclaim', also `call' (after κικλήσκω, καλέω; from there also the notation κλη-); basis *κλεϜεσ-ίζω; diff. e. g. Schulze Q. 282ff., s. Bq s. κλείω and Schwyzer 735 n. 7; cf. also Fraenkel Glotta 4, 36ff.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [606] *ḱleuos `fame'Etymology: Old verbal noun of a word for `hear', found in several languages: Skt. śrávas- n. `fame' ( κλέος ἄφθιτον: ákṣiti śrávaḥ), Av. sravah- n. `word', OCS slovo n. `word', also OIr. clū and Toch. A klyw, B kälywe `fame', and also Illyr. PN Ves-cleves (= Skt. vásu-śravas- `having good fame'; cf. Εὑ-κλῆς). The denomin. κλε(ί)ω \< *κλεϜεσ-ι̯ω also agrees to Skt. śravasyáti `praise', which therefore can be pre-Greek. Further s. κλύω. - On κλέος s. Grammatical information: n. pl.Meaning: `beam' (Pamphil. ap. EM 521, 34, H.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Technical word of unknown origin. The resemblance to μέλαθρον (s. v.) can hardly be accidental (quite uncertain idea of Pisani KZ 71,126). After Grammont Dissimilation 43 for *κμέρεθρον to Skt. (gramm.) kmárati `be crooked'; "not more than a possibility" (Mayrhofer KEWA s. v., rejected EWAia III 129). Cf. on καμάρα. - Prob. 20 μῖμος
Grammatical information: m. (f.)Meaning: name of an actor, `mime' (A. Fr. 57, 9, E. Rh. in lyr., D., Plu., pap.), kind of scenic sketch, founded by the Syracusan Sophron, `mimus' (Arist.).Compounds: Compp., e. g. μιμο-γράφος `mime-writer' (hell.), λογό- μιμος m. "spoken mime", `actor or writer of...' (Hegesand. Hist.), ἀρχί-μιμος m. `chief comedian' (plur.); as 2, member mostly verbal to μιμέομαι, e.g. γυναικό-μιμος `imitating women' (trag.).Derivatives: μιμάς, - άδος f. `mimic player (female)' (Ael.), μιμώ f. `ape' (Suid. s. πίθηκος), μιμ(ε)ία f. `farce' (Ph.), μιμικός `regarding the μῖμος, mimic' (hell.). -- Besides, prob. as denomin., μιμέομαι, μιμήσασθαι, also w. prefix, e.g. ἀπο-, ἐκ-, `imitate, mimic, (in art) copy' (h. Ap. 163) with derivv.: ( ἀντι-, ἀπο-, ἐκ-)μίμησις `imitation, artistic, esp. dramatic presentation' (IA.), ( ἀπο-) μίμημα `imitation, representation' (IA.); ( συμ-)μιμητής m. `imitator, artist' (IA.), μιμήτωρ, - ορος m. `id.' (Man.); μιμητικός `able to imitate, imitating, mimetic' (Pl., Arist.); μιμηλός `id.', also `imitated' (Luc., Plu.), or `referring to μῖμος' (Chantraine Form. 242), with μιμηλάζω (- ίζω?) = μιμέομαι (Ph.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Compared with μιμέομαι μῖμος is rarely and late attested, but must be considered as its basis. -- The technical meaning of μῖμος makes a loan probable (cf. Schwyzer 423). The connection with Skt. māyā f. `magic(image), illusion, deception' assuming an ablaut māi: mī (Schulze KZ 27, 425 = Kl. Schr. 53) must therefore be considered as a very remote possibility (the suggested ablaut does not exist). Further uncertain connections in WP. 2, 220; s. also μοῖτος. -- Lat. LW [loanword] mīmus `id.' (W.-Hofmann s.v.); Messap. LW [loanword] mimeteos (gen.) from μιμητής (Krahe IF 49, 268). - So no etymology; prob.
