Before the 1920s, when it became widely popular, son was mostly enjoyed by the lower classes and was once even banned for being immoral. A son group usually consists of the “tres” (a double-stringed guitar), bongos, “claves” or “palos” (a pair of sticks which are struck together to give a beat), a normal guitar, a bass guitar and voice, although there are many variations. Among the greatest exponents of son were Benny Moré (1919-63) and Arsenio Rodríguez (1911-72).* * *I m sound;al son de to the sound of;en son de broma jokingly;en son de paz in peaceII vb → ser* * *son nm1) : soundal son de la trompeta: at the sound of the trumpet2) : news, rumor3)en son de : as, in the manner of, by way ofen son de broma: as a jokeen son de paz: in peace -

[música, baile] flamencoFLAMENCOAlthough often seen as synonymous with Spanish culture abroad, flamenco originated in the southern region of Andalusia. It has deep roots in Gypsy, Arab and Jewish music, and it is Spain’s “gitanos” (gypsies) who have kept it flourishing to the present day. Originally, flamenco consisted of unaccompanied singing (“cante”). Later this was accompanied by flamenco guitar (“toque”), rhythmic hand clapping (“palmas”), rhythmic feet stamping (“zapateado”) and dance (“baile”). The castanets (“castañuelas”) so often associated with flamenco were introduced only later. Flamenco is actually a catch-all term for a wide range of musical styles, which range from the strangulated emotive sobbing of “cante jondo” (one of the most traditional forms), to the work of new artists who are producing catchy rock and pop versions of flamenco.* * *I adj MÚS flamenco atr ;ponerse flamenco get smart o fresh;estar muy flamenco para su edad fam be in pretty good shape for one’s ageII m1 MÚS flamenco2 ZO flamingo* * *flamenco, -ca adj1) : flamenco2) : Flemishflamenco, -ca n: Fleming, Flemish personflamenco nm1) : Flemish (language)2) : flamingo3) : flamenco (music or dance)* * *flamenco2 n1. 3 frml (sentir agrado o afición) gustar de, to enjoy: gusta de salir a pasear por las mañanas, he likes to have a walk in the morning
II vtr (degustar, probar) to taste
Gustar se traduce por to like: Me gusta esta música. I like this music.
I like to go to the dentist twice a year. Me gusta ir al dentista dos veces al año. Sería muy difícil que alguien dijera I like going to the dentist, porque significaría que disfruta haciéndolo.
En el modo condicional ( I would like) sólo se puede usar el infinitivo: I would like to go out tonight. Me gustaría salir esta noche.

[músico] mariachi (musician)MARIACHIA mariachi band may contain from six to eight violinists, two trumpeters and a guitarist, as well as other more specialized instruments, such as the “guitarrón” (an outsize, deep-toned guitar), the “vihuela” (a high-pitched guitar), and the harp. As well as providing the music for songs, mariachi music serves for dancing as well, often with foot-stamping steps which descend from Spanish Flamenco. Mariachi music began to acquire its current popularity in the 1930s, when band members began wearing the typical “charro” outfit that is familiar today - the short black jacket, tight trousers and wide-brimmed “sombrero” hat, all with silver trimmings. Mariachi bands were once a common sight at baptisms, weddings and national celebrations, and might even be hired to serenade a loved one, though nowadays they are less common, due to the high cost of contracting their services.mariachi2 adjMéx Fam ham-fisted;Celia es bien mariachi para cocinar Celia is hopeless at cooking* * *I m mariachi bandII m/f mariachi player* * *mariachi nm: mariachi musician or band -

19 fandango
(Sp. model spelled same [fandáŋgo], of uncertain origin, perhaps < fado, a popular Portuguese song and dance < Latinfatum 'destiny; prophetic utterance' because it was a lyrical commentary about a person's fate).1) New Mexico: 1807. A lively Spanish or Spanish-American dance in triple time accompanied by castanets.2) DARE: 1843. The music that accompanies such a dance.3) New Mexico: 1774. A social party or celebration where dancing is a principal activity.4) DARE: 1848. Any boisterous, disorderly get-together.5) Texas: 1890. A dance hall. The DARE notes that this usage is obscure.6) As a verb, to throw a celebration for someone.7) California: 1928. As an attributive adjective, it relates to prostitution (according to the DARE, dance halls were commonly associated with prostitution). Thus, a fandango house was a brothel, and fandango girls were prostitutes. Fandango is glossed in the DRAE as an old Spanish dance that is still common today in Andalusia, Spain. It is a dance in triple time with lively and passionate movements accompanied by guitar playing, singing, castanets, and sometimes violins and cymbals. In Spanish the term may also refer to the music and verses that accompany a fandango dance or, figuratively, to a brawl or uproar. Cobos glosses fandango as a dance or "shindig." -
