Ζεῦς ( Διεύς, root διϝ), gen. Διός, dat. Διί, acc. Δία, voc. Ζεῦ, also gen. Ζηνός, dat. Ζηνί, acc. Ζῆν(α): Zeus (Diespiter, Juppiter; cf. Ζεῦ πάτερ, Il. 3.320), the son of Cronos and the father of gods and men, god of the lightning, the clouds and weather, of time itself, hence ὑψίζυγος, αἰθέρι ναίων, Διὸς ὄμβρος, Διὸς ἑνιαυτοί, εὐρύοπα, ἐρίγδουπος πόσις Ἥρης, αἰγίοχος, ὑψιβρεμέτης, νεφεληγερέτα, κελαινεφής, στεροπηγερέτα, τερψικέραυνος, ἀστεροπητής, ἀργικέραυνος, ἐριβρεμέτης. Zeus is the sender of portents, and the shaper of destiny, πανομφαῖος, Διὸς τάλαντα, etc.; he is the protector of kings, of suppliants, of house and court, and he presides over the fulfilment of oaths, διοτρεφεῖς, διογενεῖς βασιλῆες, Ζεὺς ξείνιος, ἱκετήσιος, ἑρκεῖος. The root must have been *gʷel-\/gʷol-. - There may have been a perfect with present meaning *βέβολα, a trace of which could be προ-βέβουλα (Α 113) with newly introduced ου from βούλομαι. The o-vocalism and the β- may have been spread from the perfect. (There may also have been influence of βουλή, but this may itself have been derived from the present.) But it seems doubtful that the perfect alone is the source of all the o-vowels. - The central problem is the origin of the present. One has assumed an n- or an s-suffix; Ruijgh, Lingua 25 (1970) 315f. thinks only - λν- can explain the compensatory lengthening. S. Slings, Mnemosyne 28 (1975) 1-16. - Recently Peters, FS Risch 1986, 311, suggests a root in -h₃. This may help explain the o-vocalism. A nasal present * gʷl-n-h₃- would have given *βαλνο- [or βλανο-?] which was replaced by *βολν-. Pamphylian βΟλΕμενος would have βολε- \< *βελο- \< * gʷelh₃-. Many problems of detail remain. E.g. there is no evidence for βλω- and no basis for the introduction of the o-vocalism; in this view the e-vocalism is also problematic. - On the relation between βούλομαι, ἐθέλω and λῆν s. ἐλελίζω (2)Grammatical information: v.Meaning: 1. `shake', med.-pass. `tremble, be shaken', 2. `turn round, t. oneself' (Il.).Compounds: As 1. member (cf. Schwyzer 444: 3) in ἐλελί-χθων `shaking the earth' (Pi. P. 2, 4), `earth-shaker', surname of Poseidon (Pi. P. 6, 50), of Dionysos (S. Ant. 153); also in ἐλελί-σφακος, - ον s. v.Etymology: In the aorist forms ἐλέλιξα, ἐλελίχθην two verbs seem to have merged: 1. a reduplic. present ἐλελίζω `shake'; 2. an augmented *ἐ-Ϝέλιξα with the present (Ϝ)ελίσσω `turn' (s. v. ἔλιξ). The preterite ἐλέλικτο refers to a snake in Λ 39 and belongs therefore as *ϜεϜέλικτο `twisted itself' to 2; the expression ἔγχος... σειόμενον ἐλέλικτο Ν 558 can as well represent the turning or whirling as the shaking movement. It is no longer possible to distinguish the two. Cf. Chantr. Gramm. hom. 1, 132, also Bechtel Lex. s. ἐλελίζω. - In the meaning `shake' ἐλελίξαι, ἐλελίζω is connected with Skt. réjate `tremble', réjati `put in (whirling) movement', Goth. laikan `jump', Lith. láigyti `wild umherlaufen' etc.; it supposes that - ίξαι, - ίζω is part of the root; see Risch 257ff. One starts from a root aorist ἐ-λέ-λιξ-α, to which the passive aorist ἐ-λελίχ-θην and the present ἐ-λελίζω were formed either with prothesis (impossible) or with draging of the augment (cf. This root is seen in κερά-σαι (beside analogical κεράσ-σαι); (there is no Skt. *á-śari-ṣam). Nasal presents are Skt. śrī-ṇā́-ti and κίρ-νη-μι; both forms however are renewed or reshaped. Fraenkel 1,207; 2, 126).Etymology: With περι-κτί-ται agrees but for the lengthening ā-stem Skt. pari-kṣí-t-'living round about', with ( ἐΰ)-κτιτος Av. ( ana)- šita- `uninhabited'. Besides stands the athemat. root-present Skt. kṣé-ti, pl. kṣi-y-ánti (= Myc. ki-ti-je-si [trans.]) - Av. šaēiti, šyeinti `live'. An agreeing athematic ptc. is κτί-μενος. The transitive-causative meaning `make as living, found', which is a Greek innovation, started from the aorist κτίσ(σ)αι, which arose beside an intransitive root-aorist (still preserved in κτί-μενος), like ἔ-στη-σα to ἔ-στη-ν (s. ἵστημι). To κτίσ(σ)αι arose κτίζω, and to these the other forms (Schwyzer 674 a. 716, Wackernagel Unt. 77). κτί-σις too has an exact parallel in Skt. kṣi-tí-, Av. ši-ti- `living (place)', but the deviant meaning makes it as innovation to κτίζω suspect (cf. Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 95 n. 5). With κτοίνα agrees, except for the i-stem, Arm. šēn, gen. šini `inhabited (place)'. - Cf. Bq and Pok. 626. As with κτείνω we now assume * tkei-. Scheller Oxytonierung 40.Etymology: With πείθω agrees formally exactly the Lat. themat. root-present fīdō, - ere, IE * bheidh-ō; semant. agrees however the Lat. verb with middle πείθομαι (cf. confīsus sum). Formal identity we find also with the Germ. verb for `wait' in Goth. beidan, OHG bītan etc.; the semantic cleft ('wait (for)' from `trust' or `conform, restrain' ?) is however not yet bridged. The causative too Goth. baidjan `compel', OHG beitten etc. `urge, demand' is semantically divergent; after Specht KZ 66, 205 ff. an agreeing. Gr. *ποιθέω (to which the reduplicated aor. πεπιθεῖν) would have been replaced by act. πείθω. -- The Greek system including the nominal forms is quite explainable from itself; the various adduced nouns, esp. from Lat., like fīdus (formally = the innovated πειθός), fĭdēs, foedus (not to εὑ-πειθής or to πεῖσα), to which perh. also Alb. bē f. `oath' and OCS běda `need' (IE * bhoidhā), do not help understand the Greek forms. Quite doubtful is the connection of πιστός with Alb. besë f. `belief, treaty, faithfulness', appar. from * bhidh-tā f.
