6 κείρω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `cut (off), shave, esp. of hair, mow off, cut down, ravage' (Il.).Other forms: Aor. κεῖραι, ep. also κέρσαι, pass. καρῆναι ( καρθέντες with v. l. κερθέντες Pi. P. 4, 82), fut. κερέω, κερῶ, perf. pass. κέκαρμαι, new act. κέκαρκα (hell.),Compounds: often with prefix, e. g. ἀπο-, δια-, περι-. Comp. ἀ-κερσε-κόμης `with uncut hair' (Υ 39), also ἀ-κειρε-κόμᾱς, - ης (Pi.); on the form Schwyzer 442, on the meaning Fink Philol. 93, 404ff.Derivatives: 1. κέρμα n. `cut off piece, esp. small piece of money, change' (Emp. 101, 1 [not quite certain], Com., hell.) with κερμάτιον (hell.) and κερματίζω `change in small money' (Att., Arist.); from it κερματιστής `money-changer' (Ev. Jo. 2. 14), κερματισμός `cut into little bits' (Olymp.); κερματόομαι = - ίζομαι (Procl.). - 2. κορμός m. `cut off piece, bobbin, trunk' (ψ 196) with κορμίον (hell.), κορμηδόν `in pieces' (Hld.), κορμάζω `saw into pieces' (D. H.). - 3. κουρα s. v. 4. καρτός s. v. - Cf. also κόρση, κόρις, κέρτομος, 2. κέλωρ.Etymology: κείρω from *κερ-ι̯ω (Schwyzer 715, 751, 759), belongs to a widespread IE. wordgroup; but exact agreements of the Greek verb forms. Nearest is Arm. k` erem `scratch, shave' (sec. aorist k`ere-c̣i; diff. Meillet BSL 37, 12), Alb. sh-kjer `tear apart' (pret. \> sh-kora \< IE. * kēr-); further Hitt. karšmi `cut off' (with s-enlargement as in κουρά; s. v.). Frequent are forms with initial * sk-: Germ., OHG sceran ` scheren', Lith. skiriù, skìrti `separate', OIr. scar(a)im `separate'. A t-enlargement in Skt. kr̥-n-t-áti `separates' (infixed nasal present; perf. ca-kart-a); this would be possible for the aorist ἔκερσα (if \< *ἔ-κερτ-σα, Risch 219). - The number of nominal derivv. in the separate languages is enormous, partly parallel innoavtions. Thus formal agreement exists between κέρμα and Skt. cárman-, Av. čarǝman- n. `skin, hide', OPr. kērmens m. `body' (IE. *kér-men-); diff. only in ablaut betwen κορμός and OCS krъma f. `steering oar, back part of the ship', Russ. kormá `puppis'. - Further Pok. 938ff., W.-Hofmann s. carō, cēna, corium.Page in Frisk: 1,810-811Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κείρω

Of κρᾱ- ( κρη-): 1. κρᾶσις, κρῆσις ( σύγκρ. etc.) `mix' (IA) with *κρᾱσίον \> ModGr. κρασί `wine' (Kretschmer Glotta 15, 64f., Hatzidakis ib. 139f.; on the meaning of κρᾶσις s. Den Dulk Κρᾶσις. "mixer", `mixing bowl', also metaph., `Krater' (Il.; on the meaning Brommer Herm. 77, 359 a. 366) with κρατηρία `id.' (Dsc.; Scheller Oxytonierung 54) and the diminutiva κρατήριον, κρη- (Hp.), κρατηρ-ίδιον (Boeot., J.), - ίσκος (Delos IIIa, Ath.); κρατηρίζω "drink a bowl", `intoxicate oneself' (Sophr., D.; cf. Wackernagel Glotta 14, 52f. = Kl. Schr. 2, 860f.). 4. compounds like ἄ-κρᾱ-τος (- η-) `unmixed' (Il.), αὑτο-κρη-ής "mixed with itself", i. e. `unmixed' (Nic. Al. 163), αὑτό-κρας `id.' (Poll.). - B. Of κερᾰ-: κατα-κέρασις `mixing (with water)' (Arist.), κέρασμα `id.' (hell.), συγ-κερασμός `id.' (gloss.), κεραστός ( εὑ-, ἐγ-κέρ.) `mixed' (D. H., Plu., APl.), κεραστής `mixer' (Orph.), ἐπι-, κατα-κεραστικός `causing a (real) mix' (medic.), μετά-κερας adj. n. `tempered, lukewarm' (Com.), αὑτό-κερας, also as adv. `unmixed' (Poll., Phryn.; cf. αὑτοκρηής). S. also on 2. ἀκήρατος. In the meaning `unxed' ( οἶνος; Dsc. 5, 6, 10) ἀκέραιος is a reinterpretation of ἀκέραιος `undamaged'; s. on 1. ἀκήρατος.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [582] *ḱerh₂- `mix;Etymology: With the verbal adjective (ἄ)-κρᾱτος agrees Skt ptc. ā́-śīr-ta- `mixed'; both Gr. κρᾱ-, κρη- and Skt. śīr- represent the zero grade of a disyll. root. This root is seen in κερά-σαι (beside analogical κεράσ-σαι); (there is no Skt. *á-śari-ṣam). Nasal presents are Skt. śrī-ṇā́-ti and κίρ-νη-μι; both forms however are renewed or reshaped. An IE. *ḱr-nā-ti should have been Skt. *śr̥-ṇā́-ti (seen in the homonymous word for `break'), and Gr. *κάρ-νη-σι; the ι in κίρνημι is rather innovation after the reduplicating presents τίθημι, γίγνομαι etc. than old reduced grade. - To old κερά-σαι came the innovations κεραίω, κεράω, κεράννυμι (Schwyzer 676, 681, 697) just like κερῶ, κεράσω, κερασθῆναι, κεκέρασμαι (both with analogical σ); old(er) were κρᾱ-θῆναι, κέ-κρᾱ-μαι (like βλη-θῆναι, βέ-βλη-μαι a. o.). - Another system is provided by Oldiranian in the also semantically deviating Av. sar- `unite' (which must perhaps be separated; Gonda Acta Or. 14, 201; s. also Wackernagel-Debrunner KZ 67, 174 = Kl. Schr. 1, 390) - Further Pok. 582.Page in Frisk: 1,824-825Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κεράννυμι

Grammatical information: f.Compounds: Compp. e. g. κερκο-φόρος `with a tail', ἄ-κερκος `tailless' (Arist.); on κέρκουρος and κέρκωψ s. v.Derivatives: The diminutives κερκίς (s. v.) and κερκίον (Aq., Sm., Thd.); also the animal's names κέρκα ἀκρίς H.(s.v.), κερκώπη name of a cicada (Ar.; Strömberg Wortstudien 16; cf. on Κέρκωπες), prob. also κέρκαξ ἱέραξ H. and (with unclear, perhaps corrupt ending) κέρκνος ἱέραξ, η ἀλεκτρυών H. (after the long or characteristic tail; κέρκος itself is glossed by H. a. o. with ἀλεκτρυών; cf. however also on κρέξ); - κέρκωσις `tail-like growth' (medic.); κερκέτης τὸ μικρὸν πηδάλιον H. (Paus. Gr. Fr. 118).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: As opposed to οὑρά κέρκος, perh. prop. `stave, rod' (s. on κερκίς), seems to come from the lowly language. Origin unknown. Doubtful hypotheses (to κρέκω?, κρίκος, κίρκος?, MIr. corc `covering with hair', from *κερ-κρ-ος dissimil.?) are given by Bq (with Add. et Corr.). 10 κερτομέω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `taunt, insult, mock, ridicule' (almost only poetic, Il.).Other forms: aor. (rare) κερτομῆσαι.Derivatives: Also κέρτομος `insulting, slandering' (pöet. Hes. Op. 788) with κερτομίαι pl. `mockery, slander' (Hom.; diff. Porzig Satzinhalte 207f.); also with ιο-suffix κερτόμιος `id.' (Hom., S. in lyr.), κερτόμησις (S. Ph. 1236). From ἐπικερτομέω: ἐπικερτόμ-ημα (Demetr.), - ησις (Hdn.) and as back-formation ἐπικέρτομος (Q. S.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Expressive word of unknown origin. Acc. to Prellwitz Wb. s. v. univerbation of κείρειν and τέμνειν (cf. the formations in Schwyzer 645; s. also on λοιδορέω); similar, but in detail unclear, Radermacher Festschrift Kretschmer 149ff. Brugmann IF 15, 97f. assumes *κέρ-στομος `having a mocking mouth' (cf. ἐΰ-στομος) also from κείρειν (s. also Benveniste Origines 68 and on σκερβόλλω). Acc. to others (cf. W.-Hofmann s. carinō) the group of κάρνη was also involved in the formation of the 1. element. Diff. again Pisani Ist. Lomb. 77, 583. - Whether κέρτομος was the basis of κερτομέω seems doubtful; it was rather a backformation (cf. Risch 181). - Fur. 349 reminds of καρτομιστής χλευαστής H. (`mocker'). The variant vocalism shows Pre-Greek origin. The root has been connected with Lat. carināre, and the words cited under κάρνη. Schrijver, Larr. in Latin, 429 is no doubt right to connect the group σκερβόλλω, - βολέω, κερβόλλουσα `insult, mock, slander', which is again connected with ( σ)κέραφος, σχέραφος. All these words are clearly Pre-Greek (thus also Schrijver). The second elements are unknown; are they compounds? Fur. 349 n. 46 suggest σ comparison with Hitt. kartimmii̯a `be angry', kartimnu `get angry', though the meaning is not exactly the same. (Wrong therefore Perpillou RPh. 11 κέρχνος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `raw voice, hoarseness' (Hp., S. Ichn. 128), `raw surface, rough excrescence' (S. Fr. 279), auch = ὁ τῶν ἀργυρίων κονιορτός (Poll. 7, 99).Compounds: Compp. ἄ-κερχνος `without hoarseness' (Aret.), αἱμό-κερχνον n. `cough with blood spitting' (Hp.; subst. bahuvrihi). From ἄκερχνος and κέρχνω arose the adj. κέρχνος ( κερχνός?) `raw' of the voice, `hoarse' (Gal.) [??].Derivatives: κερχνώδης `raw, hoarse' (Hp.), κερχνασμός `rawness, hoarsness' (Gal.; as if from *κερχνάζω). Denomin. verb κερχνόομαι, - όω `be raw, uneven or make, engrave' (H.) with κερχνώματα pl. `unevennesses, elevated, embossed(?) work' (H.; after this also E. Ph. 1386 to be read for κεγχρώμασι?, cf. on κέγχρος), κερχνωτός `embossed, engraved' (H.); also κέρχνω `be or make hoarse' (Hp.; on the formation Schwyzer 723 Zus.). - Beside it κερχαλεος `raw hoarse' (Hp.), also κερχναλέος (Hp. v. l., Gal.; cf. below). On κερχνηΐς s. v.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Without certain connection; onomatopoetic? The form κρέξ (name of a bird) seems hardly comparable. One proposes κέρχνος \< *κέρκ-σνος? Pisani Ist. Lomb. 73: 2, 12 reminds of Skt. ghar-ghara- m. `crackling, rattling' (and independent Lat. hirriō `grumble', OE. gierran `crack, creak, girren' etc. (Pok. 439); κέρχνος would continue *κερ-χρ-ο-ς. κερχαλέος would be analogical, as ἰσχνός: ἰσχαλέος. Sommer Nominalkomp. 166), as 2. member in κερ-οίακες (from κερα(ι)-οίακες) pl. `rigging of the yardarm'? (Luc. Chantraine Form. 279). -- Besides οἰήϊον n. `rudder' (Hom.).Etymology: Instrument-name formed like πόρπᾶξ, τρόπηξ, resp. λαισήϊον, ἐργαλήϊον a.o. (Chantraine 381 a. 60 f.). The basis of the Greek words was an old noun with unknown stem; an ā-stem * oisā- is possible, nut not necessary. The noun seems preserved as Balt. LW [loanword] in Finnougr., e.g. Finn. aisa `bar of the forked pole (thill)' from Balt. * aisō or * aisa- (IE * oisā-, * oiso-). The Balt. word is again based on a Slav. s-stem, e.g. Sloven. ojê, ojês-a `(carriage) pole' (further Slav. forms in Vasmer s.vojé), IE. * oio \/ es- n. Besides with zero grade, also lengthened, Skt. īṣ-ā́ f. `pole', from which as LW [loanword] Hitt. hišša-'pole' (s. Kronasser Etymologie 144 against Kammenhuber; borrowing is also denied by Benveniste Hitt. et i.-eur. 13f.).
