82 Hornby, Frank
SUBJECT AREA: Domestic appliances and interiors[br]b. 15 May 1863 Liverpool, Englandd. 21 September 1936 Liverpool, England[br]English toy manufacturer and inventor of Meccano kits.[br]Frank Hornby left school at the age of 16 and worked as a clerk, at first for his father, a provision merchant, and later for D.H.Elliott, an importer of meat and livestock, for whom he became Managing Clerk. As a youth he was interested in engineering and in his own small workshop he became a skilled amateur mechanic. He made toys for his children and c.1900 he devised a constructional toy kit consisting of perforated metal strips which could be connected by bolts and nuts. He filed a patent application in January 1901 and, having failed to interest established toy manufacturers, he set up a small business in partnership with his employer, D.H. Elliott, who provided financial support. The kits were sold at first under the name of Mechanics Made Easy, but by 1907 the name Meccano had been registered as a trade mark. The business expanded rapidly and in 1908 Elliott withdrew from the partnership and Hornby continued on his own account, the company being incorporated as Meccano Ltd. Although parts for Meccano were produced at first by various manufacturers, Hornby soon acquired premises to produce all the components under his own control, and between 1910 and 1913 he established his own factory on a 5-acre (2-hectare) site at Binn's Road, Liverpool. The Meccano Magazine, a monthly publication with articles of general engineering interest, developed from a newsletter giving advice on the use of Meccano, and from the first issue in 1916 until 1924 was edited by Frank Hornby. In 1920 he introduced the clockwork Hornby trains, followed by the electric version five years later. These were gauge "0" (1 1/4 in./32 mm); the smaller gauge "00", or Hornby Dublo, was a later development. Another product of Meccano Ltd was the series of model vehicles known as Dinky toys, introduced in 1934.Frank Hornby served as a Member of Parliament for the Everton Division of Liverpool from 1931 to 1935.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsMP, 1931–5.Further ReadingD.J.Jeremy (ed.), 1984–6, Dictionary of Business Biography, Vol. 3, London, 345–9 (a useful biography).Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers 127(1934):140–1 (describes the Binn's Road factory).RTS -

88 above
I adv 1. наверх, наверху; 2. выше Наречие above 2. носит книжный характер и употребляется главным образом в письменной речи. Оно используется для отсылки к уже упомянутому и чаще всего сочетается с глаголами сообщения типа mention, report, state, quote и с существительными типа table, paragraph:as shown (reported, stated) above — как показано (как сообщалось, как указывалось и т. д.) выше;
the table above shows — таблица, приведенная выше, показывает.
II prp 1.
Такое одновременное указание на положение и расстояние часто связано с наречиями и предлогами along, behind, below, beyond, down, under, up:a few steps behind the crowd — пару шагов позади толпы;
a mile below — милей ниже;
far down — далеко внизу;
miles and miles along the shore — много миль вдоль берега.
(2). Предлог above подчеркивает нахождение объекта выше, чем что-либо, поднятым над некоторой точкой отсчета, и предполагает известное расстояние между этими двумя точками. Предлог above может относиться как к пространственному, физическому положению, так и к умственным способностям, духовным качествам и социальному положению:in a flat above the shop — в квартире над магазином;
six feet above the level of the floor — шесть футов над полом;
above sea-level — выше уровня моря, над уровнем моря;
two degrees above zero — два градуса выше нуля;
above your ability — выше твоих способностей;
He held his hands above his head — Он держал руки вытянутыми над головой (он держал руки прямо вверх от плеч так, что они поднимались/были выше головы).
He held his hands over his head —
He held an umbrella over/above her head — Он держал зонтик у нее над головой.
The aeroplane flew over/above the city —
(4). В количественных выражениях above 2., как и его антоним below, указывает только на направление и положение относительно точки отсчета:500 ft above sea level — 500 футов над уровнем моря;
children above the age of 10 (aged 10 and above) — дети около 10 лет.
В отличие от above, предлог over подчеркивает превышение степени качества, часто значительное, по сравнению с ожидаемой на некоторой шкале:He is over sixty (но не above) — Ему уже за шестьдесят (больше чем шестьдесят);
He has been there over five hours —
The repairs to my watch cost me over five pounds —
(5). Для указания движения над чем-либо, поверх чего-либо и часто перемещения за пределы этого объекта употребляется только over:to throw the ball over the fence — перебросить мяч через забор;
to jump over the stream — перепрыгнуть через ручей;
to lean over the child — склониться/наклониться над ребенком.

90 Stevenson, Robert
[br]b. 8 June 1772 Glasgow, Scotlandd. 12 July 1850 Edinburgh, Scotland[br]Scottish lighthouse designer and builder.[br]After his father's death when he was only 2 years old, Robert Stevenson was educated at a school for children from families in reduced circumstances. However, c. 1788 his mother married again, to Thomas Smith, Engineer to the Northern Lighthouse Board. Stevenson then served an apprenticeship under his new stepfather. The Board, which is still an active force in the 1990s, was founded in 1786 to oversee the lights and buoyage in some of the wildest waters in Western Europe, the seas around the coasts of Scotland and the Isle of Man.After studies at Andersen's College (now the University of Strathclyde) and later at Edinburgh University, Stevenson assumed responsibility in the field for much of the construction work sanctioned by the Board. After some years he succeeded Smith as Engineer to the Board and thereby the long connection between the Northern Lights and the Stevenson family commenced.Stevenson became Engineer to the Board when he was about 30 years old, remaining in that office for the best part of half a century. During these years he improved catoptric lighting, adopted the central lamp refracting system and invented the intermittent flashing light. While these developments were sufficient to form a just memorial to the man, he was involved in greater endeavours in the construction of around twenty lighthouses, most of which had ingenious forms of construction. The finest piece was the Bell Rock Lighthouse, built on a reef off the Scottish East Coast. This enterprise took five years to complete and can be regarded as the most important construction of his life.His interests fitted in with those of the other great men living in and around Edinburgh at the time, and included oceanography, astronomy, architecture and antiquarian studies. SUBJECT AREA: Metallurgy[br]b. 1710 Bristol, Englandd. 1789 England[br]English metallurgist, the first to produce metallic zinc in England on an industrial scale.[br]William, the youngest of the three sons of Nehemiah Champion, stemmed from a West Country Quaker family long associated with the metal trades. His grandfather, also called Nehemiah, had been one of Abraham Darby's close Quaker friends when the brassworks at Baptist Mills was being established in 1702 and 1703. Nehemiah II took over the management of these works soon after Darby went to Coalbrookdale, and in 1719, as one of a group of Bristol copper smelters, he negotiated an agreement with Lord Falmouth to develop copper mines in the Redruth area in Cornwall. In 1723 he was granted a patent for a cementation brass-making process using finely granulated copper rather than the broken fragments of massive copper hitherto employed.In 1730 he returned to Bristol after a tour of European metallurgical centres, and he began to develop an industrial process for the manufacture of pure zinc ingots in England. Metallic zinc or spelter was then imported at great expense from the Far East, largely for the manufacture of copper alloys of golden colour used for cheap jewellery. The process William developed, after six years of experimentation, reduced zinc oxide with charcoal at temperatures well above the boiling point of zinc. The zinc vapour obtained was condensed rapidly to prevent reoxidation and finally collected under water. This process, patented in 1738, was operated in secret until 1766 when Watson described it in his Chemical Essays. After encountering much opposition from the Bristol merchants and zinc importers, William decided to establish his own integrated brassworks at Warmley, five meals east of Bristol. The Warmley plant began to produce in 1748 and expanded rapidly. By 1767, when Warmley employed about 2,000 men, women and children, more capital was needed, requiring a Royal Charter of Incorporation. A consortium of Champion's competitors opposed this and secured its refusal. After this defeat William lost the confidence of his fellow directors, who dismissed him. He was declared bankrupt in 1769 and his works were sold to the British Brass Company, which never operated Warmley at full capacity, although it produced zinc on that site until 1784.[br]Bibliography1723, British patent no. 454 (cementation brass-making process).1738, British patent no. 564 (zinc ingot production process).1767, British patent no. 867 (brass manufacture wing zinc blende).Further ReadingJ.Day, 1973, Bristol Brass: The History of the Industry, Newton Abbot: David \& Charles.A.Raistrick, 1970, Dynasty of Ironfounders: The Darbys and Coalbrookdale, Newton Abbot: David \& Charles.J.R.Harris, 1964, The Copper King, Liverpool University Press.ASD -
