TRADUCCIÓN.—Las gentes de mis aldeas en los tiempos pasados, eran todas enamoradas y fervientes creyentes, y no de palabra, sino de hechos y hermosos sentimientos, así era, que cada aldea o parroquia tenía su Santo o su Dulce Santina, que todos los años le hacían la mejor fiesta que pudieran prepararle. Por aquellos tiempos todavía las Dulces Santinas de mis queridas aldeinas tenían un mayordomo por así llamarlo que habla sido elegido por el vecindario, que tenía la misión de cuidar y administrar los intereses de la Santina para que los taimados sacerdotes no se los robaran, como comenzaron hacerlo después de la Guerra Civil, que sembró de muertos toda nuestra querida Tierrina. Este mayordomo tenía que rendirle las cuentas no al cura, sino a la Junta vecinal de la aldea o parroquia, y así de esta manera entre todos hacían todo cuanto fuese menester, para que cada año hubiese mejor romería. Por aquellos tiempos era la Santina de la aldea lo mismo que un divino ser viviente, al que todas las gentes le rogaban favores y consejos, por todas estas cosas las gentes siempre le estaban ofreciendo cosas, así era, que el día de su fiesta lo mismo tras la procesión de la Dulce Santina iban una docena de ramos hechos amorosamente con la mejor harina de escanda que alumbraban sus productivas tierras. Algunos ramos estaban hechos de dulce, quiero decir que estaban amasados con manteca, buenos huevos, miel y azúcar. Así era que cuando se iban a subastar, que tal cosa la llevaba a cabo el propio mayordomo, las nobles e hidalgas gentes y sentimientos, que lo mismo venían de la querida Argentina o del amado Méjico o de cualquier parte del mundo, de Asturias o de España, digo que pujaban por aquel pan bendito con prodiguez y santificante entusiasmo, y con los dineros que se sacaban con esta subasta, y las limosnas que dejaban en los cepillos de la Santina, se hacía la ruidosa romería que lo mismo se alargaba dos o tres días, donde las orquestas de música, los gaiteros y tamborileros, que todos tocaban a la tema (envidia) a ver quién mejor lo hacía, y que habla muchos y los mejores de Asturias, tocaban y gritaban hartos de cordero y sidra, así como de toda clase de licores y vinos, lo mismo que si estuviesen enloquecidos, haciendo que las gentes bailasen y cantasen plagadas de felicidad, de noble y sana alegría. —Hoy en día, todas estas ancestrales tradiciones fueron casi del todo exterminadas por los mismos curas que por la ley de la fuerza se apoderaron de todos los intereses de las Santinas, guardando avaramente los dineros sagrados de las limosnas que entregaba el sano y creyente pueblo, por esta tan simple razón se han deshecho muchas fiestas y romerías sonadas de nuestra Amada Asturias. —Yo humildemente pienso ahora, que aquellas sanas costumbres tradicionales, que aquellas recias y firmes creencias, tenían al Pueblo Astur hermanado, muy unido, lo mismo las gentes de las derechas que las de las izquierdas, todas estaban fraternalmente unidas, y daban en todo momento hasta sus propias vidas en la defensa de nuestra Embrujado y Dulce Tierrina. Hoy en día con tanto partido de “caga la perra”, estamos todos separados, enfadados unos con los otros, como si nos odiásemos rabiosamente, los derechistas por un lado sin poder hacer nada, los izquierdistas por el otro haciendo lo mismo, y con estos haceres envenenados y mal olientes, estamos todos llenando a nuestra querida Asturias de desgracias y pobrezas. (J. L. Martín). (M. F. de Arrate). Africanos de la costa atlántica, en un territorio ribereño entre Dakar y Sierra Leona, J. L. Martín cree que son los kankanda, sabe o sobo, llamados por el Dr. Ortiz gangá. Cree Martín que los "zape" o "gangá" son "un pueblo emparentado con los yorubas" o lucumís, y que poseen "lenguajes muy similares". De los "zape" escribió Arrate entre 1751-1760 refiriendo que existía desde 1598 una cofradía, a nombre de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios concedida a pedimento de los negros zape desde antes de 1598 en que el dilatorio trámite colonial terminó. También refiere la hermandad de San Benito de Palermo, que como la cofradía mencionada, era de libertos zape. Agrega J. L. Martín: "...casi pudiéramos afirmar que aquellos zapes cristianos, a quienes se refiere Arrate fueran los primeros yorubas establecidos en La Habana. Haciendo notar al mismo tiempo que después se les denominó, en conjunto, yorubas o yorumas, aunque en Africa había la distinción entre los del interior (yorubas propiamente dichos) y lucumís (yorubas costeños), por depender del rey Ulkumi". A las especulaciones de J. L. Martín se oponen los siguientes datos: que la tradición oral que yace en nuestros negros menciona a los "zapes" como una clase de africanos distintos de lucumís y congos; que no aparecen datos, orales o escritos, en Cuba, conocidos por nosotros o tratados por Ortiz, Castellanos o Lydia Cabrera, que mencionen e identifiquen a los tales "zapes" con los lucumís; que no se mencionan los apelativos de kankandas, sabe o sobo, en la tradición de Cuba; que la identidad entre zapes y "gangás" apareció por primera vez en la revista cubana Bohemia, del 12 de junio de 1949 (año 4 [m2]Nº 24) en un escrito del Sr. Juan Luis Martín, sin más demostración rigurosa. Escribió Ortiz en "Los Negros Esclavos". La Habana, 1916. "Zape.-Citado por Pérez Beato. En el mapa de Mungo Park figura Sappe como población de la ribera del Gambia y, seguramente, de ahí proceden". Más información aparece en la obra "Los Negros Esclavos", por el Dr. Fernando Ortiz y en el folk básico de Cuba, en fuentes vivas.
