82 depreciation
Gen Mgtan allocation of the cost of an asset over a period of time for accounting and tax purposes. Depreciation is charged against earnings, on the basis that the use of capital assets is a legitimate cost of doing business. Depreciation is also a noncash expense that is added into net income to determine cash-flow in a given accounting period.EXAMPLETo qualify for depreciation, assets must be items used in the business that wear out, become obsolete, or lose value over time from natural causes or circumstances, and they must have a useful life beyond a single tax year. Examples include vehicles, machines equipment, furnishings, and buildings, plus major additions or improvements to such assets. Some intangible assets also can be included under certain conditions. Land, personal assets, stock, leased or rented property, and a company’s employees cannot be depreciated.Straight-line depreciation is the most straightforward method. It assumes that the net cost of an asset should be written off in equal amounts over its life. The formula used is:(Original cost – scrap value)/Useful life (years)For example, if a vehicle cost $20,000 and can be expected to serve the business for seven years, its original cost would be divided by its useful life:(30,000 – 2,000)/7 = 4,000 per yearThe $4,000 becomes a depreciation expense that is reported on the company’s year-end income statement under “operation expenses.”In theory, an asset should be depreciated over the actual number of years that it will be used, according to its actual drop in value each year. At the end of each year, all the depreciation claimed to date is subtracted from its cost in order to arrive at its book value, which would equal its market value. At the end of its useful business life, any undepreciated portion would represent the salvage value for which it could be sold or scrapped. For tax purposes, some accountants prefer to use accelerated depreciation to record larger amounts of depreciation in the asset’s early years in order to reduce tax bills as soon as possible. In contrast to the straight-line method, the declining-balance method assumes that the asset depreciates more in its earlier years of use. The table opposite compares the depreciation amounts that would be available, under these two methods, for a $1,000 asset that is expected to be used for five years and then sold for $100 in scrap. The depreciation method to be used for a particular asset is fixed at the time that the asset is first placed in service. Whatever rulesor tables are in effect for that year must be followed as long as the asset is owned.Depreciation laws and regulations change frequently over the years as a result of government policy changes, so a company owning property over a long period may have to use several different depreciation methods. -

Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `equal' in number, strength, size, status etc. (Il.).Compounds: Very often as 1. member, e. g. ἰσό-θεος `god-like' (Il.), hypostasis of ἴσος θεῳ̃ or bahuvrihi `having gods as equals' (Risch 170; cf. Sommer IF 55, 195 n. 2), ἰσό-πεδον `plain' (Il.), ἰσό-πεδος `with the same level, as high' (Hdt., Hp.; cf. Risch IF 59, 15), ἰσ-ηγορίη, - ία `equal richt to speak, equal civil rights' (IA; compound of ἴσον ἀγορᾶσθαι); on ἰσοφαρίζω s. v.; as 2. member e. g. in ἄ(ν)-ισος `unequal, unfair' (IA).Derivatives: ἰσότης `equality' (Pl., Arist.), ἰσάκις `as often' (Pl.), ἰσαχῶς `in as many ways' (Arist.); denomin. verbs: ἰσάζω `make, be equal' (Il.) with ἰσασμός (Epicur.) and ἰσαστικός (Eust.); ἰσόομαι, - όω `become, make equal' (since η 212); ἰσαίομαι `be (made) equal' (Nic., Arat.); on the denomin. Schwyzer 727 a. 734.Etymology: As to the formation ϜίσϜος, from which ep. ἶσος (cf. on the digamma Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 144; the apparent vowel-prothesis ἐ-(Ϝ)ίση is artificial, Beekes Development 65f), Att. ἴσος, agrees with *μόνϜος (\> μοῦνος, μόνος), *ὅλϜος (\> οὖλος, ὅλος) a. o.; further analysis is uncertain. As IE -su̯- was not retained in Greek, the comparison with Skt.viṣu- `to several sides' (Curtius 378) must be given up. Phonetically a basic *Ϝιτσ-Ϝος (cf. Schwyzer 308) would do but the morphological connection to a zero grade *Ϝιδσ- from εἶδος `shape' (Brugmann Grundr.2 2: 1, 205) is hypothetical. - Diff. Meillet BSL 26, 12f. [let]N1) (Tennis) dejada f, let m2) (Jur)LET
Meaning "allow"
► Translate using either dejar, especially in informal contexts, or permitir, especially in more formal contexts. Both verbs can be followed either by an infinitive or by que + ((subjunctive)):
Let me do it Déjame hacerlo, Déjame que lo haga
Let her have a look Deja que ella lo vea, Déjale verlo
We must not let the children see this No debemos permitir que los niños vean esto or permitir a los niños ver esto
Imperative
First person plural ► Translate let's and let us + ((verb)) using either vamos a + ((infinitive)) or using the present subjunctive of the main verb. The second construction is used particularly in formal language and when translating let's not:
Let's go for a walk! Vamos a dar un paseo
Let's consider the implications of the Government's decision Consideremos las implicaciones de la decisión del Gobierno
Let's not waste any more time No perdamos ya más tiempo To translate l et's go, use vamos or vámonos o n its own without a following infinitive:
Let's go to the theatre ¡Vamos al teatro! ► When let's is used on its own to reply to a suggestion, translate using vamos or vámonos i f the verb in the suggestion was ir. Use vale or venga if not:
"Shall we go?" - "Yes, let's" "¿Nos vamos?" - "¡Sí, vamos!" or "¡Sí, vámonos!"
"Shall we watch the match?" - "Yes, let's" "¿Vemos el partido?" - "Sí, vale" or "Sí, venga"
Third person ► When let introduces a command, suggestion or wish in the third person, translate using que + ((subjunctive)):
Let him come up! ¡Que suba!
Let there be no misunderstanding about this ¡Que no haya ningún malentendido sobre esto!
Let them do as they like ¡Que hagan lo que quieran! ► Be careful to distinguish between the "permission" sense of let sb do something and the "command" sense:
Please let them stay here (i.e. Please allow them to stay) Déjalos que se queden aquí or Déjalos quedarse aquí, por favor
Let them stay here! (i.e. expressing a decision or an order) ¡Que se queden aquí! When que is used in this sense, it never takes an accent. For further uses and examples, see main entry* * *
