2) (Naipes) dummyDÍA DE LOS MUERTOS 2 November, All Souls' Day, called the Día de los Muertos elsewhere in the Spanish-speaking world and Día de los Difuntos in Spain, is the day when Christians throughout the Spanish-speaking world traditionally honour their dead. In Mexico the festivities are particularly spectacular with a week-long festival, starting on 1 November, in which Christian and ancient pagan customs are married. 1 November itself is for children who have died, while 2 November is set aside for adults. Families meet to take food, flowers and sweets in the shape of skeletons, coffins and crosses to the graves of their loved ones. In Spain people celebrate the Día de los Difuntos by taking flowers to the cemetery. 20-N N 20-N is commonly used as shorthand to refer to the anniversary of General Franco's death on 20 November 1975. During the Franco régime, the use of Galician and other minority national languages was prohibited in the media and in public institutions. It has enjoyed lengua cooficial status alongside castellano since 1981. There are several dialects of the language and formal attempts to standardize them in the 1970s were unsuccessful. However, a standard form is now beginning to emerge naturally in the larger urban areas.See:ver nota culturelle LENGUAS COOFICIALES in lengua* * *I- ga adjetivoa) ( de Galicia) Galicianb) (AmL fam) ( español) SpanishII- ga masculino, femeninoa) ( de Galicia) Galicianb) (AmL fam) ( español) Spaniardc) gallego masculino (Ling) Galician•• Cultural note:The language of Galicia, spoken by around 3 million people. * * *gallego, -a♦ adj1. [de Galicia] Galician♦ nm,f1. [de Galicia] Galician♦ nm[lengua] GalicianGALLEGOGallego (“Galician”) is one of the four official languages spoken in Spain. It is spoken in the northwestern region of Galicia. Like Spanish and Catalan, it stems from late Latin, and it has many similarities to Portuguese in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. For decades Galician was either banned or officially unrecognized, and as a consequence it was mainly spoken in traditional or rural areas. However, in recent times it has re-emerged with the support of the Galician nationalist movement and is being promoted as the official language for use in schools and education. Although many Galician-born authors have written mainly or exclusively in Spanish, one of Spain's greatest nineteenth century poets, Rosalía de Castro, wrote much of her poetry in Gallego. Today Galician is used by an increasing number of well-known authors, one of the best-known of whom is the poet and short story writer Manuel Rivas.* * *I adj1 Galician2 Rpl famSpanishII m, gallega f1 Galician2 Rpl famSpaniard* * *gallego, -ga adj1) : Galiciangallego, -ga n1) : Galician* * *gallego adj n Galician -

f.pilgrimage, journey to a sacred or devotional place.* * *1 RELIGIÓN pilgrimage, procession2 (fiesta) festivities which take place at a local shrine* * *SF1) (Rel) pilgrimage2) (Aut) queue, tailbackROMERÍA In Spain romerías are annual religious pilgrimages to chapels and shrines associated with particular saints or miracles of the Virgin. The pilgrims, called romeros, make their way on foot to the particular holy site, often covering long distances, and make offerings. The day's festivities often include sports fixtures, fireworks and traditional music and dancing. Some romerías are large-scale events, one of the best known being the Romería de la Virgen del Rocío at Huelva in Andalusia, which involves spectacular processions of pilgrims in traditional Andalusian dress, some on horseback and some in brilliantly decorated wagons.* * *a) (Relig) procession (to a local shrine, gen followed by festivities)b) (AmL fam) ( multitud) mass, crowd* * *a) (Relig) procession (to a local shrine, gen followed by festivities)b) (AmL fam) ( multitud) mass, crowd* * *1 ( Relig) procession (to a local shrine, gen followed by festivities)* * *

- come at- come by- come in- come of- come off- come on- come out- come to- come upCOME, GO Although c ome and venir usually imply motion towards the speaker while go and ir imply motion away from them, there are some differences between the two languages. In English we sometimes describe movement as if from the other person's perspective. In Spanish, this is not the case. ► For example when someone calls you:
I'm coming Ya voy ► Making arrangements over the phone or in a letter:
I'll come and pick you up at four Iré a recogerte a las cuatro
Can I come too? ¿Puedo ir yo también?
Shall I come with you? ¿Voy contigo? ► So, use ir rather than venir when going towards someone else or when joining them to go on somewhere else. ► Compare:
Are you coming with us? (viewed from the speaker's perspective) ¿(Te) vienes con nosotros? For further uses and examples, see come, go* * *[kʌm]

PACTOS DE LA MONCLOA In the unstable political environment in Spain that followed Franco's death and the narrow victory of Adolfo Suárez's UCD party in the 1977 general election, it became obvious that a great deal of cross-party cooperation would be needed if progress was to be made. The result was the Pactos de la Moncloa, named after the prime minister's official residence, where the pacts were signed in October 1977. They were designed to bring together all political groups in a spirit of consensus in order to push through vital legislation, specifically the Constitution, but also budgets and regional policies.pacto social — [gen] social contract; [de salarios] wages settlement

57 Ferro, Antônio
(1895-1956)Writer, journalist, cultural leader, and diplomat in the early and middle phases of the Estado Novo. Born into a family with strong republican sympathies and enrolled as a student in Lisbon University's Law Faculty, Ferro soon abandoned his faith in the chaotic republic, quit studying law, and became a poet, writer, and journalist. His reputation as a modernist and nationalist who was also a cosmopolitan, celebrated, prolific, and well-traveled journalist was acquired during the years 1917-33, when his publications attracted much public attention. Ferro published best-selling accounts include exclusive personal interviews of right-wing dictators in Italy, Spain, and other countries; portraits of the United States, including Hollywood in the 1920s; and a depiction of the turbulent Spanish Republic prior to the Spanish Civil War.The best-selling book that brought Ferro a key government job with the Estado Novo was composed of a series of 1932 interviews with Portugal's dictator, Salazar-O Homem e a Sua Obra (1933). This sensational book advanced an appealing image of Antônio de Oliveira Salazar, recently appointed premier by the military. The next year, Salazar invited Ferro to head the government's new information arm, Secretariado de Propaganda Nacional, which was renamed Secretariado Nacional da Informação (SNI) in 1944. From 1933 to 1949, Ferro directed this agency. Later alienated by the political situation, he was posted as a diplomat to Berne and Rome. Ferro married the Lisbon-based writer Maria Fernanda de Castro (1900-94). She collaborated with him on many writing and film projects. Ferro's so-called "policy of the Spirit" was a cultural policy that blended modernism, nationalism, and conservative values in the plastic and performing arts, film, and literature. After his diplomatic service abroad, he died in Lisbon. -
58 Ronaldo, Cristiano
(Dos Santos Aveiro)(1985-)Portuguese soccer player ranked as one of top professional players in the world. Born in Funchal, Madeira, in 1985, Ronaldo trained from the early age of eight with amateur Youth Clubs. In 2001, he joined one of the top professional futebol clubs of Portugal, Sporting CP, and in 2002, he was signed by the legendary British professional team, Manchester United. His salary was 12.24 million pounds sterling, a world record for a player of his youth. Although he preferred to wear the number "28," his Sporting CP number, his coach insisted that Ronaldo wear the legendary "7," the number of top British players who preceded him on the team, including George Best and David Beckham. Greatly in demand, Ronaldo was approached by Real Madrid, based in Spain, which tried several times in vain, using enormous salary pledges, to lure him from Manchester United. In 2007, Ronaldo was signed to a new contract for an immense sum and became the highest paid pro team player in history.Extremely popular but also controversial, this Portuguese player won many awards and scored many goals in many tournaments, all the while accumulating some criticism about rough play and "diving," faking falls in front of umpires to get the other team penalized so that his team could take penalty shots. Some authorities rank Ronaldo as the best soccer player in soccer history, although such a claim is debatable. Still, for Portuguese soccer and for Portugal's place in world soccer, having a player with Ronaldo's talent and accomplishments at such a young age, is a rare phenomenon. -
