3.SMjugar 3.

en todo o en parte, in whole or in part
All y whole tienen significados parecidos, pero se usan en estructuras diferentes. All se coloca delante de un artículo, pronombre posesivo o demostrativo, mientras que whole se coloca después: all the world, pero the whole world; all your family, pero your whole family; all this time, pero this whole time.
Everybody has to bring their (own) pens.

* * *euskera, eusquera, euskara nmBasqueEUSKERAEuskera (or Basque) is one of several official languages in Spain. It is spoken in the northern Spanish region of Euskadi (the Basque Country), in the neighbouring province of Navarra, and in the Basque region of France. Its origin is unknown as it is not an Indo-European language. For decades euskera was either banned or officially unrecognized, and as a consequence it was mainly spoken only in rural areas. However, in recent times it has re-emerged with the support of the Basque nationalist movement and is being promoted as the official language for use in schools and education, and a growing number of schoolchildren can now speak the language. Today euskera is used by an increasing number of well-known authors, including the internationally acclaimed Bernardo Atxaga.* * *euskera nm: Basque (language)* * *euskera n Basque -

He was an authoritarian, right-wing dictator whose political philosophy included imposing traditional Catholic values and making Spain self-sufficient economically. In the 1960s, after a long period of isolation, Spain began to open its doors to foreign investment and influence. 3) (=descendencia) progeny, offspring; (=crías) brood; (=sucesión) successionGENERACIÓN DEL 27/DEL 98 The Generación del 27 is the collective name given to a group of writers and poets including Lorca, Alberti, Guillén, Cernuda and Aleixandre, who drew inspiration from earlier Spanish poets as well as from popular folk song and contemporary European art (Dadaism, Surrealism, Cubism). They particularly admired Góngora (1561-1627) and it was their commemoration of the anniversary of his death that earned them the title Generación del 27. The Generación del 98 was the name coined by Azorín for a group of writers (Baroja, Machado, Unamuno, Maeztu, Ganivet, and himself, amongst others) who saw Spain's defeat in the Cuban American war of 1898 as the start of a decline in values. While not all the supposed members of the group accepted their inclusion in it, their work demonstrates shared themes, ideals and concerns.* * *1)a) ( de una familia) generationb) (Art, Lit) generationc) (Inf) generation2) ( acción) generation* * *1)a) ( de una familia) generationb) (Art, Lit) generationc) (Inf) generation2) ( acción) generation* * *generación11 = generation.Ex: Information retrieval follows from the generation of an index.

They began to question the identity of Spain, and this was reflected in a certain pessimism in their work, though they also celebrated what they held to be its distinctive values. These authors subsequently became known as the Generación del 98, and included many of Spain's greatest writers, such as the philosopher Unamuno (1864-1936), the prolific novelist Pío Baroja (1872-1956) and the poet Antonio Machado (1875-1939).* * *f generation* * *generación nf, pl - ciones1) : generationtercera generación: third generation2) : generating, creating3) : classla generación del '97: the class of '97* * *generación n generation -

This is the day when the saint whose name they have is honoured in the Christian calendar. It used to be relatively common for newborn babies to be named after the saint on whose day they were born. So a boy born on 25 July (Saint James's day) stood a good chance of being christened "Santiago". The tradition may be dying out now that parents are no longer restricted to names from the Christian calendar. 55 carlismo
m.Carlism (history).* * *1 Carlism* * *SM CarlismCARLISMO The controversial change which Ferdinand VII of Spain made to the law in order to allow his daughter Isabella to succeed him instead of his brother, Carlos María Isidro de Borbón, gave rise to Carlism, a movement supporting Carlos's claim to the throne. It also sparked off a series of armed conflicts. The First Carlist War (1833-1839) was declared by Carlos when Isabella came to the throne, the Second (1860) was started by his son of the same name, and the Third (1872-76) by a grandson, another Don Carlos. The last Carlist pretender, Alfonso, died in 1936 without descendants, although that did not prevent the Falange Española from later backing the Carlist cause in an attempt to prevent the current king, Juan Carlos, being designated Franco's successor. To this day there is still a Carlist party in Spain.See:ver nota culturelle FALANGE ESPAÑOLA in falange* * *Spain had three civil wars known as the guerras carlistas (1833-39, 1860, 1872-76). When Fernando VII died in 1833, he was succeeded not by his brother the Infante Don Carlos de Borbón, but by his daughter Isabel, under the regency of her mother María Cristina. This provoked a mainly northern-Spanish revolt, with local guerrillas pitted against the forces of the central government. The Carlist Wars were also a confrontation between conservative rural Catholic Spain, especially the Basque provinces and Aragón, led by the carlistas, and the progressive liberal urban middle classes allied with the army. Carlos died in 1855, but the carlistas, representing political and religious traditionalism, supported his descendants' claims until reconciliation in 1977 with King Juan Carlos.* * *carlismo nmHist Carlism, = support for the claim to the Spanish throne of Don Carlos de Borbón and his descendants after the death of his brother Fernando VII in 1833 -

57 Guerras de Independencia
Spain's War of Independence against Napoleon Bonaparte's French occupation was ignited by the popular revolt in Madrid on 2 May 1808 against the French army. The reprisal executions are commemorated in a famous painting by Francisco de Goya. With support from the Duke of Wellington, Spanish resistance continued for over five years in a guerra de guerrillas which gave the world the concept and the term guerrilla warfare. The autocratic Fernando VII was restored to the throne in 1814, and his first act was to abolish the progressive Constitution of Cadiz adopted in 1812.The Wars of Independence of Spain's Latin American colonies were inspired partly by the ideas of the French encyclopédistes, partly by the example of the American and French Revolutions, and partly by Spain's own resistance to French domination. Argentina achieved independence in 1816. Simón Bolívar of Caracas led a freedom movement that was to sweep South America and earned him the title El Libertador. By 1840 all the mainland Spanish colonies were independent. Others who played a crucial roles in the independence struggles of Spain's colonies during the nineteenth century include Hidalgo, Morelos and Guerrero (Mexico), Sucre and Miranda (Venezuela, Peru), San Martín, Brown and Belgrano (Argentina), O'Higgins, San Martín (Chile), Céspedes and Martí (Cuba). -
