εἰς or [full] ἐς, PREP. WITH ACC. ONLY:—both forms are found in Hom., [dialect] Ion. poets, and early metrical Inscrr.; ἐς is best attested in Hdt. and Hp., and is found in nearly all early [dialect] Ion. Inscrr. (exc. (exc. in parody): Trag. apptly. prefer εἰς, but ἐς is used before vowels metri gr.; ἐς was retained in the phrases ἐς κόρακας (whence the Verb σκορακίζω) , ἐς μακαρίαν. [dialect] Aeol. poets have εἰς before vowels, ἐς before consonants, and this is given as the rule in Hom. by An.Ox. 1.172, cf. Hellad. ap. Phot.Bibl.p.533B. 46 βλώσκω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `go, come' (Il.).Other forms: Aor. μολεῖν, ἔβλω ἐφάνη, ὤχετο, ἔστη; fut. μολοῦμαι ( βλῶξαι, βλώξω Lyc.), perf. μέμβλωκα ( βέβλωκε ἠρεμεῖ, φύεται H.)Compounds: κατα-, προ-, ἐκ- etc. αὑτόμολος `deserter' (Hdt.); ἀγχίμολον ( ἦλθε, Il.), old absolutive Wackernagel, Mus. Helv. 1, 226ff.; ἀγχιβλώς ἄρτι παρών H.Etymology: Pres. βλώσκω \< *μλώ-σκω (cf. μολ-εῖν, μέ-μβλω-κα) from *ml̥h₃-sk- is clear. The aor. stem βλω- will have the same origin, with the zero grade from the plural. The nominal forms with - μολ- will have o-grade, * molh₃-. The aor. stem μολ-ε\/ο- is explained from metathesis in *μελο-μ, -ς, -τ \< * melh₃-. Harðarson, Wurzelaorist 169f, 224f, also assumes stressed l̥h₃ \> ολο, which is doubtful; the existence of a development μλω- (in ἔβλω) beside μολο- is improbable. I would expect *l̥h₃ \> αλ, which was replaced by ολ after the predominant o-vocalism. The metathesis is not an independent phonetic development, but part of this process of morphological reorganisation. - Outside Greek perhaps in Slavic, e.g. Serb. iz-mòlīti *`let come out', i.e. `show', Slov. molíti `hinstrecken, hinhalten'. - Uncertain Toch. A mlosk-, mlusk- `escape' (B mlutk ?). - Connection with μέλλω is phonetically improbable (because of the laryngeal), with μολεύω `cut off and transplant the shoots of trees' is semantically impossible.Page in Frisk: 1,246-247Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βλώσκω

Πυργ-αλίδαι m. pl. n. of a guild in Kameiros (inscr.); after Τανταλ-ίδαι?Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Building technical expression; because of the striking similarity with NHG Burg, Goth. baurgs `town, tower' by Kretschmer Glotta 22, 100ff. taken as German. LW [loanword] through Northbalkan. (Macedon. ?) mediation. By others taken as Pre-Greek (Pelasgian as a form of Indo-European can now be forgotten. s. Furnée 40-55; s. Prob. also Σύρτις f. name of a sea-gulf on the northcoast of Africa with sandy shores and dangerous breakers (Hdt. etc.) as "the pulling one" (cf. v. Wilamowitz on Tim. Pers. 99); metaph. `destruction' (Tim. Pers. 99, H.). 7. σύρσις f. ( διά- σύρω) `the drawing of a plough' (late). -- With φ -enlargement: 8. σύρφη φρύγανα H. 9. συρφ-ετός m. `sweepings, filth' (Hes., Call., Plu. a.o.), `rabble' (Pl. a.o.) with - ετώδης `vulgar' (Plb., Luc. a.o.); cf. νιφετός a.o. Cf. ἀσυρής.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Prob. to σαίρω `sweep' (s. v. w. lit.), but without certain cognates outside Greek. With σύρφ-η, - ετός, - αξ one compares a Germ. word for `sweep, turn (sweep turning), wipe off' in Goth. af-, bi-swairban ' εξαλεῖψαι, ἐκμάξαι', OHG swerban `drive quickly to and fro, whirl, wipe off' etc., to which also Celt., e.g. Welsh chwerfu `whirl, turn around' (Persson Stud. 55, WP. 2, 529f., Pok. 1050f. w. lit.). The semant. certainly possible connection presents the same phonetic problem as σέλας, σῦς etc. (s. vv.). In auslaut agrees σύρφη, prob. not accidentally, to the synonymous κάρφη; so formally influenced by it? An old variation bh: m in σύρ-φη: συρ-μός (Specht Ursprung 269) does not help; but it would show Pre-Greek origin -- The connection with σαίρω, both from *tu̯r̥- is hardly convincing.Page in Frisk: 2,823-824Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σύρω
