(siehe auch Hausschornstein); senkrechter oder leicht gezogener Schacht zur Abführung von Abgasen von Feuerstätten. Die früher verwendete Bezeichnung Rauchfang beschreibt die Funktion recht gut. Das Wort Schornstein leitet sich von score-stein, dem Kragstein, der den Rauchfang eines offenen Kamins trug, her. Man unterscheidet nach konstruktiven Kriterien in einschalige und mehrschalige, gemauerte und Fertigteilschornsteine und nach funktionalen Kriterien in Schornsteine mit begrenzter Temperaturbeständigkeit, Stahlschornsteine für verminderte Anforderungen, eigene und gemeinsame sowie gemischt belegte Schornsteine (DIN 18 160-1).
