1.ADVANCE, ADVANCEMENT Advance и advancement взаимозаменяются в метафорическом значении 'прогресс, успех, продвижение': industrial advance (advancement), advance (advancement) of knowledge. Кроме того, advancement часто употребляется в значении 'продвижение по службе': advancement in one's career, advancement in rank. В буквальном значении 'пространственное продвижение вперед, наступление' употребляется только advance: advance of a battleline, advance of soldiers towards a town. 2. ADVANCE TOWARDS (TO), AGAINST, ON, IN Advance towards (to) означает 'продвигаться, приближаться, подходить к чему-л,': to advance towards (to) a city, to advance towards one's place of destination. Advance against и advance on могут означать 'наступать, атаковать': to advance against (on) a city. д.): to advance against the wind, to advance against a current. Advance in употребляется в метафорическом значении 'продвигаться вперед, делать успехи в чем-л.': to advance in one's work.Difficulties of the English language (lexical reference) English-Russian dictionary > advance
