Abrañar es alinear, arreglar en todas sus vertientes al ganado, no sólo el que se encuentra en las brañas, puertos o morteras, sino también el que permanece en las cortes (cuadras) de la misma aldea. A mediados de la primavera es cuando se empieza a subir el ganado escosu (que no da leche) para los puertos, estas reses suelen por regla general ser magüetas (novillas) de tres años para abajo, unas están dandu la cría (preñadas), otras son manías (que no están preñadas), luego más tarde, hacia la última quincena del mes de mayo, que es cuando ya no se pueden pacer más los préus (prados) porque sino no dan la cosecha de hierba que se recuétche (recoge) en el mes de xuliu (julio) denominado el mes de la yerbe (hierba). Así pues, cuando los prados ya no se pueden pacer, se sube al puerto todo el demás ganado, exceptuando las xunturas (yuntas) que han de acarrear la hierba, estas vacas suelen ser las bétchaes (paridas), o las que están próximas abétchadar (a parir). Es cuando llega entonces el momento de abrañar en los puertos, de ir hacer la braña. Miles de veces y en diferentes lugares de mi Tierrina, allá por los apenados y hambrientos años de la post-guerra, siendo yo un guaxetín (chiquillo), fui abrañar para los varios amos que como criadín por mala o buena fortuna yo he servido. Había que buscar al ganado que guareciendu (pastiando) se encontraba en el extenso y comunal puerto, que muchas veces era muy difícil de dar con él, por causa de la borrina (niebla), que no permitía ver a uno ni la propia mano dellantri de sous güétchus (delante de los ojos). Otros vaqueirus llevan sal que bazcuchan d'enría 'l campíz (vierten encima del campo) y como a las vacas les agrada todo lo sallado, comencipien a chamber (empiezan a lamer) en tal lugar hasta que terminan con todo el campizo dando tiempo a que el vaqueiru la ordeñe con toda tranquilidad. También existen otros más ingeniosos que arrebaten les ganes de mexar fasta la gora de afoixinar (que aguantan las ganas de mear hasta la hora de ordeñar) y así después meando en el campizo mientras que la vaca pace y lame el lugar meado ellos con rapidez la ordeñan. Otros vaquierus sólo hacen la braña una vez cada veinticuatro horas, bien porque sus vacas tengan poca leche, o porque les interese escosalas (secarlas) para así tan sólo subir al puerto una vez cada semana a verlas. Y hay otros vaqueirus que duermen y moran en sus cabañas de las brañas y tan sólo bajan a sus aldeas una vez a la semana. Existe la creencia entre las gentes de mi Tierra no documentadas en las ancestrales y hermosas costumbres de nuestras embrujadoras aldeas, creencia divulgada por escritores que no saben dónde tiene, pongo como ejemplo el caldar la vaca (ubre), de que en Asturias no hay más vaqueirus que los de la Alzada y no recuerdo en estos momentos qué otro lugar. Mas yo les digo ahora que esos babayus de despacho que se reúnen en cabanáes (rebaños) formando las infantiles y ridículas sociedades de «Amigos del Bable» o del «Conceyu del Bable», etc., etc., que lo único que saben es buscar una popularidad ya muxiyes la corexa a les ñobles xentes de miou Tierrina (y ordeñarles la cartera a las nobles gentes de mi Tierra). Digo que estas respetables personas lo único que saben de la Llingua y costumbres ancestrales de mi Asturias. es lo que plagian en los archivos, en los escritos de otros escritores ya fenecidos que la mayor parte de ellos tampoco en estas materias no tenían namái qu'una migayina (nada más que una migaja) de idea.
