88 Elitism
In spite of the national commitment to the principles of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, France remains marked by traditions of elitism that are ingrained in the very fibre of society. The French Revolution was supposed to have done away with privileges and elites, and usher in an age of greater equality; in the event, it - and subsequent upheavals - changed the nature of the elites in France, without making a great impact on the underlying system. Indeed, the notion of 'republican elites' is one that was fundamental in the shaping of post-Revolutionary France. In terms of local power, the role of local notables - important figures - remains strong. Notables frequently fulfil multiple roles in local administration and structures, sometimes combining these with elected positions on a regional or national scale, giving them and their close supporters a considerable degree of power. (See Cumul des mandats). They are frequently referred to as les elites locales. The process of devolution in France, set in motion in 1982, has had the effect of strengthening the power base of local elites. The French education system, while offering a good quality non-selective education to all children at lower levels, is increasingly elitist towards the top, particularly when it comes to preparing for higher education. Manyclasses préparatoires, particularly those preparing students for entrance to the top institutions of higher education, called Grandes Ecoles, are very selective, and the selection process - and for that matter the system itself - often disfavours students from humble or poorer backgrounds. The Grandes Ecoles themselves, tailor-made to the needs of the nation, train the future leaders and decision makers in specific fields of the public or private sector, producing very close networks of former students, that make the British concept of the "old-boy network" seem rather informal.Places in the top grandes écoles and some other institutions are highly sought after, as graduates from these schools are seen in France as a sort of caste, membership of which is highly recommended, if not essential, for anyone wanting to reach the top. The classic example of this is the ENA, Ecole Normale d'Administration, the Grande Ecole designed to train top civil servants and future political leaders. In the corridors of French power, many if not most of the top positions are occupied by Enarques, graduates of the ENA. In 1967, Jean-Pierre Chevènement - himself an Enarque, and later to be Minister of the Interior under François Mitterrand - coined the word Enarchie, to define the French system of state elites. As for business elites, a 2006 review in the Economist observed that they "often seem to owe more allegiance to the group from which they are drawn than to the international corporations they work for."Dictionnaire Français-Anglais. Schwyzer 527). -- 7. μυρμηκ-ίζω as medic. expression `feel as though ants were running under the finger', of the pulse, `itch' (medic.). -- On itself stands μυρ-μηδών ξυνοικία τῶν μυρμήκων, μυρμηδόνες οἱ μύρμηκες ὑπὸ Δωριέων H., transformation of μύρμηξ resp. derivation from μύρμος (s. above) after τενθρηδών and other insectnames; cf. also σφηκών and other place-indications in - ών; old variation k: d assumes Specht Ursprung 205 a. 230 [impossible].Origin: IE [Indo-European] [749] *moru̯i- `ant'Etymology: For the formation cf. σκώληξ, σφήξ a.o. (Schwyzer 497, Chantraine Form. 380 f.); a velar suffix, prob. without genetic connection with μύρμηξ, is also seen in Lat. formīca `ant' and Skt. valmīka- m. n. `ant-hill'. -- The basis is seen in different forms in many IE languages, mostly with anlaut. m and in-(aus)laut. -u̯-, also with inlaut. -r-: IE *moru̯-ī ̆ in Av. maoiri-, Celt., e.g. OIr. moirb, Slav., e.g. ORuss. morovij; IE * mour-, * meur- in Germ., e.g. OWNo. maurr -n. (PGm. * maura-), OSwed. myra f. (PGm. * meuriōn-). Besides with anlaut. u̯- and inlaut. -m-: Skt. vamrá- m. (cf. valmīka above), thus βόρμαξ, βύρμαξ with β- for Ϝ-; in ὅρμικας a Ϝ- may have been lost. On itself stand Lat. formīca, whose f- however may go back through dissimilation to m- (cf. on μορμώ) and which would then be close to μύρμηξ. -- Further details on this old and popular word with diff. hypotheses on its development in WP. 2, 306f., Pok. 749. W.-Hofmann and Ernout-Meillet s. formīca, Vasmer s. muravéj; also Fraenkel s. marvà, which however because of its deviant meaning ('horse-fly') must be kept apart.Page in Frisk: 2,272-273Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μύρμηξ

From the present: ὄζ-αινα f. = ὀσμύλη (Call.), `stinking adenoid' (Gal.) with - αινικός `belonging to the ὄζαινα' (Ps.-Dsc.); ὄζολις f. = ὀσμόλη (Arist.); ὄζη f. `malodorant breath' (Cels.), `skin of the wild ass' (Suid.; because of the smell); ὀζηλίς ἡ βοτάνη (Theognost.); ὀζώδης = ὀδμώδης (EM, sch.); also Όζόλαι m. pl. name of a Locrian people (Hdt., Str., Plu. with diff. interpretations)? Lengthened present ὀζαίνομαι = ὄζω (Sophr.; after ὀσφραίνομαι; Schwyzer 733 w. lit.). -- 3. From the perf.: ὀδωδή f. `scent' (AP). -- 4. - ώδης in εὑ-ώδης `sweet-smelling, odorous' (Il.) etc.; very productive with quite faded meaning (Chantraine Form. 429 ff., Schwyzer 426 w. lit.).Etymology: Apart from the perf. ὄδωδα all verbal forms are innovations based on the pres. ὄζω. The derivations too are based largely on th present. On its own are however ὀδωδή (derived from the perfect?), but also the in Greek isolated ὀδμή and - ώδης. Both can be old, if ὀδμή agrees with Alb. amë `unpleasant smell' (IE * od-mā), - ώδης represents the s-stem of Lat. odor, OLat. odōs, prob. seen also in Arm. hot, gen. -oy (h- second.) `smell, odour', IE * odos-, either with compositional lengthening or with old lengthened grade (IE * ōdos-; cf. Lith. úodžiu below) as in Arm. -ut (e.g. hr-ut = πυρώδης from hur = πῦρ) beside -ot (e.g. bor-ot `w. florescence'). However ὀσμή not with Brugmann Grundr.2 II: 1, 251 a.o. from *ὀδ-σ-μά̄ but purely phonetically from ὀδ-μά̄, s. Schwyzer 208; cf. also ὀσφραίνομαι. -- Both IE * od-mā and * odos- presuppose a primary rootpresent, which is retained in themat. form in Lat. ol-ō, ol-ĕre (with l for d); beside it the more usual innovation ol-e-ō, - ēre (after the intransitives). The yot-pressent ὄζω differs only in the vowellength from Balt., e.g. Lith. úodžiu `smell'; we now know that the Baltic form has a long vowel because of Winter's Law (lengthening before voiced consonant). Arm. hot-im `smell' is a denominative of hot (s. above). To the redupl. perf. ὄδ-ωδ-α presents the Arm. pres. hot-ot-im (with intensive reduplication) a close formal parallel. -- Further forms w. rich lit. in WP. 1, 174, Pok. 772f., W.-Hofmann s. odor, Ernout-Meillet s. odor (important for the morphology); cf.
