    Meaning: attribut. to θύρα (Ar., Lys., Plu.), also substantivized f. `the door that opens from the (outside) court, or from the living of the men, towards the back rooms' (opposite ἡ αὔλειος θύρα `the outside door'), in Vitr. (6, 7, 5) of a corresponding corridor;
    Other forms: μέσαυλος (E., Ph. [v. l. - λιος, Vitr.), μέσσαυλος (- ον) `the inner court where the cattle were put for the night' (Hom., A. R. 3, 235); μεσαύλη f. `court inside the houses' (pap. VIp; reading not quite certain).

    Etymology: Att. μέταυλος indicates as hypostasis either ἡ μετ' αὑλήν ( θύρα), i. e. the court behind the (outward) court, or ἡ μετ' αὑλῆς ( μετ' αὑλῶν θῦρα), i. e. the door in the middle of the court (between both courts); the meaning, which changed with the organisation of the house, cannot be settled without exact knowledge of the plan of the house, cf. the explanations by Wistrand Eranos 37, 16ff.; the etymological analysis is accordingly uncertain. On μεσο- for older μετα- Wackernagel Syntax 2. 242. -- Hom. μέσσαυλος seems however to stand for τὸ μέσον or (εν) μέσσῳ αὑλῆς and "what belongs to the middle of the court" or "what is in the middle of the court", i. e. `middle of the court, inner of the court', cf. Risch IF 59, 19f.; it should then be separated from μέταυλος. In A. R. 3, 235 ep. μέσσαυλος may have been influenced by the later μέσαυλος; late μεσαύλη followed the simplex.

But προνώπια reminds strongly of the synonymous ἐνώπια; therefore with Eust., Bechtel Lex. s. νάπη and Ehrlich Betonung 126f. from *προ-ενώπια or only semantic assimilation? (Frisk suggest that προνωπής and νωπέομαι, which cannot be connected with ἐνώπιος, can be connected with νάπη `woodland vale, glen' (Bq, Bechtel l.c.) with ablaut as in κώπη: κάπτω, which I strongly reject.)

    ב. Apart from OT quots., Mt and Mk speak of Jesus as κύριος only in one pass. (words of Jesus himself) Mk 11:3=Mt 21:3 (but s. RBratcher, ET 64, ’52/53, 93; New Docs 1, 43; JDerrett, NovT 13, ’71, 241–58 on the public transport system; cp. Lk 19:31, 34), but they record that he was addressed as ‘Lord’ (κύριε), once in Mk (7:28) and more oft. in Mt, e.g. 8:2, 6, 8, 21, 25; 9:28; 14:28, 30; 15:22, 25, 27; 16:22 (also ApcSed 12:2).—Lk refers to Jesus much more frequently as ὁ κ. (Iren. 1, prol. 2 [Harv. I 4, 5] and 5, 26, 2 [Harv. II 396, 2]): 7:13; 10:1, 39 (Ἰησοῦ P75; τοῦ Ἰησοῦ P45 et al.), 41; 11:39; 12:42a; 13:15; 17:5f; 18:6; 19:8 al. The voc. κύριε is also found oft.: 5:8, 12; 9:54, 61; 10:17, 40; 11:1; 12:41 al.—In J the designation ὁ κ. occurs rarely, in the first 19 chapters only in passages that are text-critically uncertain (4:1 v.l.; 6:23, with omission in some mss.) or that have been suspected on other grounds (11:2); then 20:2, 18, 20, 25; cp. vss. 13, 28; 21:7ab, 12. (1) mast-block, represented in the cut (see a) as a metal shoe in which the mast was firmly fastened so as to be turned back ward on the pivot (c) to a horizontal position, until it rested upon the ἱστοδόκη, Od. 2.424. See also plate IV., where the μεσόδμη is somewhat differently represented as a threesided trough or mast-box.— (2) μεσόδμαι, small spaces or niches, opening into the μέγαρον of the house, and enclosed on three sides, behind by the outside wall, and on either side by the low walls which served as foundations of the columns, Od. 19.37.     Etymology: With the primary themat. root present στέγω, beside which appear only late incidental non-present forms (for these στεγ-άσαι etc.), agrees Skt. sthagati `cover, conceal', which is however attested only in gramm. (Dhatup.) and by the unpalatalised g makes the impression of an innovation (beside sthagayati); cf. also below). Beside this stands in Latin the s-less tegō, aor. tēxī `cover etc.' (old athemat. presenf? Ernout-Meillet s.v.). Also for τέγος there is outside Greek an agreement, i. e. in. Celt., e.g. OIr. tech `house', IE *tégos- n. The well adapted στέγη might also, though in this form isolated, be inherited from IE. (original root noun ? Ernout-Meillet l. c.). Further the Greek forms can be explained as newly created derivations of a very lively root. We may still mention (for Greek unimportant): Lat. (with old lenghtened grade resp o-ablaut) tēgula, toga; to this as innovation tēctum (Gr. *στεκτός ghostword!); Germ., e.g. OHG dah n. `roof' (IE * togo-m), to which (as denominative or iterative) decchen ' decken'; Balt., e.g. Lith. stógas m. `roof' (IE * stogo-with Kortlandt's law). In our lit. the neut. is certain only for Barnabas.—אֵזוֹב) the hyssop (acc. to Zohary, Plants 96f = the Origanum Syriacum, not the European Hyssopus), a small bush w. blue flowers and highly aromatic leaves; used in purificatory sacrifices (Ex 12:22; Lev 14:4; Num 19:6, 18.—SIG 1218, 16 [V B.C.], where the word is beyond doubt correctly restored, the hyssop serves to purify a house in which a corpse had lain; Chaeremon also mentions its purifying power) Hb 9:19; 1 Cl 18:7 (Ps 50:9); B 8:1, 6.—In J 19:29 hyssop appears as a plant w. a long, firm stem or stalk, which creates some difficulty. The conjecture by JCamerarius († 1574), ὑσσῷ (=javelin [s. ὑσσός]: ὑσσῷ is actually found in mss. 476 and 1242, both antedating the conjecture) προπεριθέντες, has been accepted by many (e.g. Dalman, Jesus 187; Lagrange, JBernard; Field, Notes 106–8; M-M.; Goodsp., Probs. 115f; Mft.; NEB; w. reserve, Bultmann).     Etymology: Formation like πεῖρα, σπεῖρα, μοῖρα a.o. (s. vv. w. lit.). -- No agreement outside Greek. If prop. referring to the quick movement of a ball, one could connect σφαῖρα to σπαίρω a. cognates; s. v. w. further lit. Attempts, to explains the variation σπ- σφαῖρα σφ-, in Hiersche Ten. aspiratae 196 f. [improbable] Cf. also σφῦρα, σφυρόν and σπύραθοι, σπυράδες [Pre-Greek]. -- From σφαῖρα Syr. êspērō, Aethiop. ṣpīr (Schwyzer 159 a. 161), Arm. sp`er̄ (from where Georg. spero; Bailey Trans. Phil. (Ac) and the pass. what is rented, a rented house is a mng. not found outside it (even Ammonius Gramm. [100 A.D.] p. 93 Valck. knows nothing of it.
