101 ἕδνα
Grammatical information: n. pl.Meaning: `bride-gift' (Il.; on the meaning Köstler WienAkAnz. 81 [1944] 6ff., Theiler Mus. Helv. 7, 114 w. lit.).Compounds: ἀνά-εδνος `withou ἕ.' (Il.; on the prefix Schwyzer 432, Chantr. Gramm. hom. 1, 182).Derivatives: Also ἄεδνον ἄφερνον η πολύφερνον H.; ἑδνο-φορέω `bring bride-gifts' (Eust.). - Old denomin. ἑδνόομαι ( ἐεδν-), - όω `give ἕ. to one's daughter' (β 53) with ἐεδνωτής `brides father' (Ν 382; cf. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 25; 2, 206). - Several glosses in Hesych: ἕδνιος χιτών ὅν πρῶτον ἡ νύμφη τῳ̃ νυμφίῳ δίδωσιν; ἑδνάς ἡ ἀπὸ τῶν ἕδνων ἐδητύς, ἑδνεύειν ἐνεχυράζειν.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [1115] *h₁u̯ed- `bride-price'.Etymology: With ἕδνα, ἕδνον from IE *u̯ed-no- (on the aspir. Schwyzer 227) compare Slavic and a Westgermanic word for `bride-price': e. g. ORuss. věno, from *u̯ed-no- acc. to Winter-Kortlandt; not better to Lat. vēnum [ dare]; see. Vasmer Russ. et. Wb. s. véno [1, 182f.]; OE. weotuma, OHG widomo m., from PGerm. * wet-man-, IE *u̯ed-mon-; (the Gr.-Slav. no-suffix may be from - mno-, themat. of - mon-). - Uncertain Alb. vigjë `present, in the form of edibles, for a wedding etc.' (\< *u̯ed-l- ?). - This old word for `bride-price' is generally derived from a verb `(take home), marry (of the man)', which is seen in Lith. vedù, OCS vedo (with -dh because of the short vowel), OIr. fedid. - Skt. vadhū́- `bride, young woman, daughter-in-law', which one would not like to separate from the words discussed, is because of the dh incompatible with ἕδνα or Germ. weotuma. - It is clear that ἕδν- is the younger, ἔεδν- the older form. The `prothesis' (from * h₁-) must be old, as it cannot be secondary and is unnecessary.Page in Frisk: 1,442-443Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἕδνα

102 κύριος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `lord, ruler, possessor', adj. (m. f. n.) `ruling, deciding, entitled to, decided' (posthom.), f. κυρία `(lady) who rules' (hell.).Derivatives: κυρία (from κυρι-ία; cf. κυρεία from κυριεύω below) f. `rule, possession' (Arist., hell.), κυριότης f. `lordship, rule' (christ. lit.); κυριακός `belonging to the lord (= Christ), to the emperor' (Empire); κυριεύω `be, become lord, possess, get power' (X., Arist.) with κυριεία, κυρεία (Schwyzer 194) `possession, proprietary rights' (hell.), κυριευτικός, Adv. - κῶς `regarding the prop. rights' (pap.). - κυρωθῆναι, act. κυρῶσαι, κυρόω `become, make rightful' (IA.) with κύρωσις `ratification' (Th., Pl.), κυρωτής `who ratifies' (Att. inscr.); backformation κῦρος n. `authority, confirmation' (IA.) - ἄκῡρος `without authority, unvalid' (Att.) with ἀκυρόω `make unvalid' (Din., hell.), from where ἀκύρωσις, - ωτος with - ωσία (late).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [592] *ḱeuh₂- `swell, strong'Etymology: Like e.g. ἄν-υδρ-ος `without water' is based on ὕδωρ, ἄ-κῡρ-ος `without authority' supposes an r-stem, which is also seen in κύρ-ιος. Beside κύρ-ιος there may have been an ο-deriv. *κῦρ-ος, which would agree with Skt. śū́ra-, Av. sūra- `hero'; cf. the Skt. words for `sun', sū́r-ya- and sū́r-a- from súvar- n. (old l-stem, s. on ἥλιος). Cf. Schwyzer 727 n. 2; slightly different Wackernagel Syntax 2, 61 n. 1. From *κῦρος m. perhaps also κυρωθῆναι, κυρόω; but κυρ-ωθῆναι can be derived directly from the r-stem ( ἀνδρ-ωθῆναι: ἀνήρ). A trace of this r-stem shows ἔγ-κυαρ `pregnant' (Milet, VIa), from *κύαρ `foetus' (Kretschmer Glotta 8, 250). Other derivations: Skt. śávīra- `strong, powerful' (*ḱeuh₂-ro-), Celt., e.g. Gaul. Καυαρος, Welsh cawr `giant'; (uncertain Κυάρη ἡ Άθηνᾶ H.) - Further s. on κυέω.Page in Frisk: 2,53-54Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κύριος

103 PALLR
(-s, -ar), m.1) step, = gráda;2) the raised-floor along the sides of the hall, = ‘lang-pallar’;* * *m. [the etymology of this word, as also the time when and place whence it was borrowed, is uncertain; the true Norse word is bekkr or flet; pallr may be of Norman origin, although it is frequently used in the Sagas referring to the Saga time (10th century); even the benches in the legislative assembly on the alþing were called pallar, not bekkir; but this cannot have been so originally. The word itself is, like páll, probably from Lat. palus, pala = stipes, Du Cange; Engl. pale, palings; in the Icel. it is used of high steps (Lat. gradus), esp. of any high floor or daïs in old dwellings, sometimes = flet (q. v.) or = lopt (q. v.), and lastly of the benches in the hall = bekkr (q. v.) The adoption of the word was probably connected with the change in the floor and seats of the halls, as mentioned in Fagrsk. ch. 219, 220, which arrangement of benches was adopted from Norman England, and is in fact still seen in English college-halls, with the raised high floor at the upper end. In Icel. the ladies were then seated on this daïs (há-pallr, þver-pallr), instead of being placed, according to the older custom, on the left hand along the side walls, see below, II. 2. As the Sagas were written after this had taken place, so the use of the word, e. g. in the Njála (ch. 34 and often), may be an anachronism.]B. 104 Carpets
The principal types are Axminster, Brussels and Wilton, and brief particulars of each are given below. A more detailed description is given under each name. Axminster is a cut fabric made any width and with any number of colours. It is not produced on a jacquard, therefore the pile does not show on the back. The design is developed by a series of tufts which are bound into the fabric, every tuft is on the surface and only the foundation cloth is seen at the back. There are two principal varieties of these carpets, the Chenille Axminster and the Machine tufted Axminster. The Chenille type is made by two distinct operations, that of manufacturing the chenille weft and that of weaving the carpet with this weft. The " fur or chenille is first woven on an ordinary loom (see chenille) and when cut into the strips is used as weft with a linen, jute or folded cotton warp. The chenille is made preferably with the leno way of shedding in order to bind the wool yarn more firmly. All the figuring weft is on the surface and not embedded in the fabric. The chenille weft is often inserted by hand, but several mechanical methods for doing the work are now in use. From three to six tufts per inch are usual. The chenille Axminster Carpet is also known as the Patent Axminster carpet. The machine-tufted type or Royal Axminster is also formed from pile tufts previously prepared and afterwards woven in the ground warp and bound into the fabric with a binding weft. The tufts may be inserted by hand and the pile is all on the surface of the fabric. This pile is a warp product, whereas for the chenille variety it is weft. Axminster carpets are a product of skill and patience and any number of colours can be used. There are several varieties of machine-made axminster carpets. Wilton is a cut pile fabric woven 27-in. wide from not more than six colours, the yarns are fine counts and design produced by jacquards. Brussels is made almost in the same way as a Wilton, but the pile is not cut and this shows as loops on the face. The yarn is much coarser than for Wiltons. Kidderminster - A carpet made from two or more plain cloths woven together. Each cloth is brought on the face for figuring as required. Turkish - These are hand made. The pile is put into the ground warp by hand as tufts and knotted round them according to pattern. There are two picks of ground weft between each row of pile. Tapestry - Carpets woven from printed warps. The pile is cut or left uncut as required for the design. Persian - Carpets similar to Turkish, being hand made. 110 Agriculture
Historically, Portugal's agricultural efficiency, measured in terms of crop yields and animal productivity, has been well below that of other European countries. Agricultural inefficiency is a consequence of Portugal's topography and climate, which varies considerably from north to south and has influenced farm size and farming methods. There are three major agricultural zones: the north, center, and south. The north (the area between the Douro and Minho Rivers, including the district of Trás-os-Montes) is mountainous with a wet (180-249 cm of rainfall/year), moderately cool climate. It contains about 2 million hectares of cultivated land excessively fragmented into tiny (3-5 hectares) family-owned farms, or minifúndios, a consequence of ancient settlement patterns, a strong attachment to the land, and the tradition of subdividing land equally among family members. The farms in the north produce the potatoes and kale that are used to make caldo verde soup, a staple of the Portuguese diet, and the grapes that are used to make vinho verde (green wine), a light sparkling white wine said to aid the digestion of oily and greasy food. Northern farms are too small to benefit from mechanization and their owners too poor to invest in irrigation, chemical fertilizers, or better seeds; hence, agriculture in the north has remained labor intensive, despite efforts to regroup minifúndios to increase farm size and efficiency. The center (roughly between the Douro and the Tagus River) is bisected by the Mondego River, the land to either side of which is some of the most fertile in Portugal and produces irrigated rice, corn, grapes, and forest goods on medium-sized (about 100 hectares) farms under a mixture of owner-cultivation and sharecropping. Portugal's center contains the Estrela Mountains, where sheep raising is common and wool, milk, and cheese are produced, especially mountain cheese ( Queijo da Serra), similar to French brie. In the valley of the Dão River, a full-bodied, fruity wine much like Burgundy is produced. In the southern part of the center, where the climate is dry and soils are poor, stock raising mixes with cereal crop cultivation. In Estremadura, the area north of Lisbon, better soils and even rainfall support intensive agriculture. The small farms of this area produce lemons, strawberries, pears, quinces, peaches, and vegetables. Estremadura also produces red wine at Colares and white wine at Buçelas. The south (Alentejo and Algarve) is a vast rolling plain with a hot arid climate. It contains about 2.6 million hectares of arable land and produces the bulk of Portugal's wheat and barley. It also produces one of Portugal's chief exports, cork, which is made from bark cut from cork oaks at nine-year intervals. There are vast groves of olive trees around the towns of Elvas, Serpa, and Estremoz that provide Portugal's olives. The warm climate of the Algarve (the most southern region of Portugal) is favorable for the growing of oranges, pomegranates, figs, and carobs. Almonds are also produced. Farms in the south, except for the Algarve, are large estates (typically 1,000 hectares or more in size) known as latifúndios, worked by a landless, wage-earning rural work force. After the Revolution of 25 April 1974, these large estates were taken over by the state and turned into collective farms. During the 1990s, as the radicalism of the Revolution moderated, collectivized agriculture was seen as counterproductive, and the nationalized estates were gradually returned to their original owners in exchange for cash payments or small parcels of land for the collective farm workers.Portugal adopted the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) when it joined the European Union (EU) in 1986. The CAP, which is based on the principles of common pricing, EU preferences, and joint financing, has shifted much of Portugal's agricultural decision making to the EU. Under the CAP, cereals and dairy products have experienced declines in prices because these are in chronic surplus within the EU. Alentejo wheat production has become unprofitable because of poor soils. However, rice, tomatoes, sunflower, and safflower seed and potatoes, as well as Portuguese wines, have competed well under the CAP system. -

As 2. member e.g. in κάμ-μορος ( κά-σμορος), ἤ-μορος; s. v.Derivatives: Several derivv., which however mostly have an independent position as opposed to the disappearing verb 1. μέρος n. `share etc.', s. v. -- 2. μόρος m. `fate, (fate of) death, violent death' (Il.; cf. Rel. 1, 361ff. -- 5. μορτή, Dor. - τά `share of the farmer' (Poll., Eust., H.). -- 6. μόρσιμος `destined by fate'; s. v.Etymology: The perfectforms Aeol. ἔμμορε (later taken as aor. 2, whence ἔμμορες, - ον) and Ion. εἵμαρται can be explained from *sé-smor-e resp. *sé-smr̥-tai (Schwyzer 769, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 174 f., 184); here the full grade yot-present μείρομαι \< *smér-i̯o-mai (Schw. 715); cf. e.g. φθείρω: ἔφθορα: ἔφθαρμαι. Init. sm- is seen also elsewhere, e.g. ἄ-μμορος, κατὰ μμοῖραν. -- Corresponding forms are nowhere found. Cognate may be the diff. built Lat. mereō, - ēre, - eor, - ērī `earn, acquire' (prop. *'get your share, acquire'?), which may also have sm- and may be identical with the yot-present in μείρομαι. Uncertain is the meaning of Hitt. marriya- ('break in pieces, make small'?), cf. Benveniste BSL 33, 140, Kronasser Studies Whatmough 122; we would have to assume an s-less variant. Hypothetic is the connection with the group of μέριμνα (Solmsen Wortforsch. 40 f. WP. 2, 690, Pok. 970, W.-Hofmann s. mereō. -- Of the nominal derivv. only μοῖρα requires a special explanation: one may start as well from an ο-stem μόρος as from an older consonant-stem *μορ- (Schwyzer 474).
