Ковбой погибает под копытами; сотни голов скота безвозвратно потеряны. Дансон собирается выпороть повара; тот признает свою вину, но не хочет сносить унижение. Благодаря этому изобразительному ряду Красная река – один из немногих вестернов, где отсутствие цвета не вызывает никаких сожалений. Между гуманностью и красочностью Форда и трагическим драматизмом Энтони Мэнна Хоукс прокладывает свою узкую тропку, которая постепенно расширяется и вмещает историю внутренних терзаний отдельного героя, а также фрагмент эпохи и истории страны в целом. Это не превращает Красную реку в эпос: Хоукс слишком внимателен к выразительности отдельных героев и к тонкостям их взаимоотношений, чтобы работать в эпическом русле. Из написанных им портретов, контрастирующих между собой, постепенно складывается образ человека, сочетающий зрелость, отказ от лиризма и холодный расчет. Этот образ характерен для гуманизма Хоукса на всех этапах карьеры режиссера.В центре действия находится троица главных героев (старик, зрелый мужчина и молодой человек); тот же принцип будет вновь использован в Рио-Браво, Rio Bravo. [Aruṇa is represented as the elder brother of Garuḍa, being the son of Vinatā by Kaśyapa. Vinatā pre- maturely hatched the egg and the child was born without thighs, and hence he is called Anūru 'thigh- less', or Vipāda 'footless'. He cursed his mother that since she had brought him forth before the due season she would be a slave to her rival Kadrū; but at her earnest entreaties, he modified the curse and said that her next son would deliver her from bondage. Aruṇa now holds the office of the charioteer of the Sun.
