103 Unconscious
Prior to Descartes and his sharp definition of the dualism there was no cause to contemplate the possible existence of unconscious mentality as part of a separate realm of mind. Many religious and speculative thinkers had taken for granted factors lying outside but influencing immediate awareness.... Until an attempt had been made (with apparent success) to choose awareness as the defining characteristic of mind, there was no occasion to invent the idea of unconscious mind.... It is only after Descartes that we find, first the idea and then the term "unconscious mind" entering European thought. (Whyte, 1962, p. 25)If there are two realms, physical and mental, awareness cannot be taken as the criterion of mentality [because] the springs of human nature lie in the unconscious... as the realm which links the moments of human awareness with the background of organic processes within which they emerge. (Whyte, 1962, p. 63)he unconscious was no more invented by Freud than evolution was invented by Darwin, and has an equally impressive pedigree, reaching back to antiquity.... At the dawn of Christian Europe the dominant influence were the Neoplatonists; foremost among them Plotinus, who took it for granted that "feelings can be present without awareness of them," that "the absence of a conscious perception is no proof of the absence of mental activity," and who talked confidently of a "mirror" in the mind which, when correctly aimed, reflects the processes going on inside it, when aimed in another direction, fails to do so-but the process goes on all the same. Augustine marvelled at man's immense store of unconscious memories-"a spreading, limitless room within me-who can reach its limitless depth?"The knowledge of unconscious mentation had always been there, as can be shown by quotations from theologians like St. Thomas Aquinas, mystics like Jacob Boehme, physicians like Paracelsus, astronomers like Kepler, writers and poets as far apart as Dante, Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Montaigne. This in itself is in no way remarkable; what is remarkable is that this knowledge was lost during the scientific revolution, more particularly under the impact of its most influential philosopher, Rene Descartes. (Koestler, 1964, p. 148)4) The Constructive Nature of Automatic Cognitive Functioning Argues for the Existence of Unconscious ActivityThe constructive nature of the automatic functioning argues the existence of an activity analogous to consciousness though hidden from observation, and we have therefore termed it unconscious. The negative prefix suggests an opposition, but it is no more than verbal, not any sort of hostility or incompatibility being implied by it, but simply the absence of consciousness. Yet a real opposition between the conscious and the unconscious activity does subsist in the limitations which the former tends to impose on the latter. 110 freelance
Gen Mgtworking on the basis of being self-employed, and possibly working for several employers at the same time, perhaps on a temporary basis. Freelance workers have been described by Charles Handy as ideally suited to portfolio working. Freelancers must be good at multitasking; they require the skills of a manager, bookkeeper, and a promoter. People thinking about becoming freelance should conduct plenty of research, not only into the industry in which they will be offering their services, but also into their own motivation for freelancing and their character-suitability. Before leaving their day job, they should put together a business plan plotting the first year’s goals and activity, perhaps considering the possibility of starting their freelance business on a part-time basis, so that they can initially rely on their current income. An important part of this first year will be in marketing and promoting the business. Freelancers should develop a target list of companies they wish to work for, learning all they can about each company before approaching them with marketing and proposals. Good customer service could be the thing to make or break their career. Being liked is as valuable as being prompt and doing a professional job, and will encourage future business. It is, though, inevitable that a set of clients will change as time goes by. To protect themselves against this, freelancers should try to plan six months ahead, and create diversity in their client base. -

adversity flatters no man adversity makes a man wise, but not rich adversity makes strange bedfellows as well be hanged for a sheep as for a lamb between two evils 'tis not worth choosing burn not your house to rid of the mouse care killed a cat the darkest hour is that before the dawn don't rejoice about your neighbor's misfortunes, for the same may happen to you don't trouble trouble till trouble troubles you the drowning man will catch at a straw every heart knows its own bitterness everyone can master a grief but he that has it every path has a puddle the evils we bring on ourselves are the hardest to bear fretting cares make gray hairs great griefs are mute the greatest misfortune of all is not be able to bear misfortune grief makes one hour ten he bears misery best who hides it most he knows best what good is that has endured evil he that mischief hatches, mischief catches he that seeks trouble never misses if there were no clouds, we should not enjoy the sun it never rains but it pours let sleeping dogs lie light cares speak, great ones are silent mischief comes by the pound and goes away by the ounce misery loves company misfortunes make us wise misfortunes never come singly necessity knows no law needs must when the devil drives never find your delight in another's misfortune nothing dries sooner than tears of two evils choose the least one is too few, three too many the only cure for grief is action pity and need make all flesh kin there is a salve for every sore there is no sorrow on this earth that cannot be cured in heaven an unfortunate man would be drowned in a teacup we all have strength enough to bear the misfortunes of others when things are at their worst they begin to mend -

advice is something the wise don't need and the fools won't take all great minds run in the same channel all men are fools, but the wisest of fools are called philosophers better an empty purse than an empty head a big head means a big headache bought wisdom is best if you don't pay too dear for it entertain no thoughts which you would blush at in words the doors of wisdom are never shut a flow of words is no proof of wisdom the fool wonders; the wise man asks go where he will, a wise man is always at home happy is the man who finds wisdom and gets understanding he who questions nothing learns nothing high living, low thinking if what men most admire they would despise, it would look like mankind were growing wise it is easy to be wise after the event it needs great wisdom to play the fool little hair, much wit know thyself knowledge and wisdom are far from being one men talk wisely but live foolishly nine-tenths of wisdom consists in being wise in time no man can be always wise no man is born wise or learned one good head is better than a thousand strong hands one hears only what he understands popular opinion is the greatest lie in the world riches serve a wise man but command a fool so many men, so many minds speech is the gift of all but the thought of few a still tongue makes a wise head two heads are better than one where all think alike, no one thinks very much where ignorance is bliss 'tis folly to be wise wisdom doesn't always speak in Greek and Latin wisdom goes not always by years wisdom in a poor man is a diamond set in lead wisdom is ever a blessing, education is sometimes a curse wisdom is the wealth of the wise a wise man changes his mind; a fool never does a wise man is strong a wise man will make more opportunities than he finds a wise man's day is worth a fool's life wise men care not for what they cannot have wise men learn by other men's mistakes; fools insist on learning by their own a word to the wise words are the wise man's counters and the fool's moneyEnglish-Ukrainian dictionary of proverbs > _розум; мудрість; думка

all women look the same after the sun goes down a woman knows a bit more than Satan a woman's strength is in her tongue any wise man can be fooled by a foolish woman behind every great man there is a great woman deeds are masculine; words are feminine handle with care women and glass he that has not got a wife is not yet a complete man it takes twenty-one years for one woman to make a man of her son; it takes twenty-one seconds for another woman to make a fool of him a man doesn't want a woman smarter than he is a man is as old as he feels, and a woman as old as she looks man reigns, but woman rules a man thinks he know, but a woman knows better a man who won't lie to a woman has very little consideration for her feelings the man who can govern a woman can govern a nation men are always wooing goddesses and marrying mere mortals tell a woman and you tell the world men are born the slaves of women the only secret a woman can keep is her age men build houses; women build homes two women can never live under one roof while there's a world, it's a woman that will govern it a woman can throw out the window more than a man can bring in at the door women are strong when they arm themselves with their weaknesses women will have last word a young woman married to an old man must behave like an old woman women would be more charming if one could fall into their arms without falling into their hands
