61 κεῖμαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `lie, be somewhere, happen etc.' (Il.).Other forms: 3. sg. κεῖται, 3. pl. κέαται, Att. κεῖνται, inf. κεῖσθαι etc. (further forms in Schwyzer 679; sehr unsicher myk. ke-ke-me-na)Dialectal forms: Myc. ke-ke-me-na uncertain.Compounds: very often with prefix in diff. meanings, ἀνά-, κατά-, παρά-, ἔγ-, ἔκ-, ἐπί-, σύγ-κειμαι etc.Derivatives: 1. κοῖτος m. `layer, bed, sleep' (Od.), κοίτη f. `id., matrim. bed, nest, parcel, lot' (Od.); often in compp., e. g. ἀπό-, σύγ-, ἡμερό-κοιτος, ἀ-, παρα-κοίτης (cf. on ἀκοίτης). From κοῖτος, κοίτη: κοιτίς f. `box' (Men., J.; cf. Schwyzer 127) with κοιτίδιον `id.' (sch.); κοιτάριον `bed' (sch.); κοιτών m. `sleeping room' (Ar. Fr. 6, hell.) with κοιτώνιον, - ωνίσκος, - ωνίτης, ωνικός ; κοιτατήριον `id.' (Cyrene; cf. ἑστιατήριον s. ἑστία); κοιταῖος `lying on the layer' (Decr. ap. D. 18, 37, Plb.), κοιτάριος `belonging to the bed' ( Edict. Diocl.). Denomin. verb κοιτάζομαι `lay down, nest' (Pi., hell.), - άζω `bring to rest, lay down', also `partition the land' (from κοίτη `parcel'), hell. From here κοιτασία `living together' (LXX), κοιτασμός `folding the cattle' (pap.). - 2. *κοίμη or *κοῖμος with denomin. κοιμάω `lay to rest, put to bed', κοιμάομαι `go to bed' (Il.); from there κοίμησις `lay down, sleep (of death)' (Pl., LXX, NT), κοίμημα `sleep, sleeping with' (S.), κοιμη-τήριον `sleeping room, restplace, burying-place' (inscr.); also κοιμίζω = κοιμάω with κοίμισις, - ισμός, - ιστής, - ιστικός; rater reshaped from κοιμάω. - 3. κειμήλιον n. `valuables, precious thing' (Il.), secondary - ιοι Pl. m. (f.) (Pl. Lg. 931a; apposition of πατέρες η μητέρες); ηλ-derivation of a neuter *κεῖμα (Frisk Eranos 38, 42 a. 41, 52). In the same meaning κεμήλιον (Alc. G 1, 8)? Specht KZ 68, 145 (after *θεμήλιον, θέμηλα); but s. on κεμάς. - Cf. also κῶμα and κώμη. - Verbal derivv.: iterative ( παρε)- κέσκετο (ξ 521, φ 41); desiderative or future forms κείω, κειέμεν, κείοντες etc.; late lengthening κατεκείαθεν κατεκοιμήθη H. (after Hom. μετεκίαθεν); further details in Schwyzer 679, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 322 und 453.Etymology: An exact agreement of the athematic present κεῖται gives Indo-Iranian in Skt. śéte, Av. saēte `lies'; further Hitt. kitta, -ri; uncertain Lyc. sijęni `id.' (Pedersen Lykisch und Hittitisch 17f.). The nominalen t- and m-formations are also found outside Greek: Bret. argud `light sleep' \< *are-ḱoi-to-; Germ., e. g. Goth. haims `village, Heim', Latv. sàime `family', Lith. šeimýna `id.', OCS sěmьja `id.', prob. also Celt., e. g. OIr. cōim `dear'. Other derivv. of the verb in Lat. cīvis, Germ., e. g. Goth. heiwa-frauja `lord of the house', Skt. śéva- `trusty, friendly, dear' as in Arm. sēr `love' with sirem `love'. - Further Pok. 539f., W.-Hofmann s. cīvis. - The verb has full grade in the middle with static inflection: Skt. śay-e, pl. śe-re, without -t-.Page in Frisk: 1,809-810Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κεῖμαι

62 κόμβος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `roll, band, girth' (Anon. ap. Suid.);Compounds: as 1. member in κομβο-λύτης βαλαντιοτόμος H., κομβο-θηλεία f. `buckle' (sch.; from κόμβος θῆλυς [ θήλεια]); also κομπο-θηλαία `band, girth' (sch.) and κομπο-θήλυκα pl. (Hippiatr.; v. l. for πόρπακας) after κόμπος = `boast'(?).Derivatives: κομβίον = περόνη (Eust., Sch.), κομβώσασθαι στολίσασθαι, κόμβωμα στόλισμα H., κομβώματα = καλλωπίσματα etc. (Suid., H.). Better attested is the hypostasis ἐγκομβόομαι `bind on, draw on' (Epich., hell. Com., 1 Ep. Pet. 5, 5) with ἐγκόμβωμα `protecting upper garment worn by slaves' (Longus, Thd.); further ἀνακομβόομαι `gird oneself' (Gp.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Technical word without certain explanation. One compares since Fick 1, 383; 3, 71, Zupitza Die germ. Gutt. 22f. on the one hand some Baltoch-Slavic words for `hang etc.', e. g. Lith. kabìnti `hang on, hook on', kìbti `hang on oneself, hook on', S.-Csl. skoba `fibula', Russ. skobá `iron hook, clamp', on the other Gr. σκαμβός `crooked (legs)', Σκόμβος PN (after Bechtel KZ 44, 358 "the limper"); further the isolated Norw. hempa `Kleiderstrippe, strap, handle' (can hardly be separated from hamp `hemp'). "Das Resultat dieser Vergleiche ist offenbar eine sowohl lautlich wie begrifflich wenig befriedigende Approximation." Frisk - Pok. 918, W.-Hofmann s. cambiō and campus, Vasmer s. skobá. - The IE connections are quite dubious. The forms κομβοθηλεία, κομποθηλαία, κομποθήλυκα clearly show a Pre-Greek word (a confusion of κόμβος with κόμπος is improbable, so the variation β\/π points to a Pre-Greek word; note also the variation - εια, - αια (and - υκα!), which we have seen more often in Pre-Greek (Beekes, Pre-Greek, suffixes sub - αι\/- ε(ι)). But does it contain the word κόμβος? The derivation of the second element from θῆλυς is clearly wrong.Page in Frisk: 1,907-908Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κόμβος

64 ὄμβρος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `rain, shower, thunder rain', also `rainwater', metaph. `water' (Il.).Compounds: As 1. member e.g. in ὀμβρο-φόρος `bringing rain' (A., Ar.); often as 2. member, e.g. ἔπ-, κάτ-ομβρος `rainy, wet because of rain' (Hp., Arist.; Strömberg Prefix Studies 108f., 145).Derivatives: Several adj.: ὄμβρ-ιος `belonging to rain, like rain' (Pi., Ion.), - ηρός `wet' (Hes.), - ηλός `id.' (Theognost.: cf. ὑδρηλός and Chantraine Form. 242), - ώδης `abundant in rain' (Thphr.), - ικός `id.' (Vett. Val.), - ιμος = `belonging to rain, rainy' (Nic. Th. 388, v.l., PMag. Lond.; Arbenz 25); also ἀνομβρήεις `abundant in rain' (Nic. Al. 288, Ὄλυμπος, from ἀν-ομβρέω; cf. below). -- Subst. ὀμβρία f. `rain' (sch.; cf. ἀντλία, ὑετία a.o., Scheller Oxytonierung 54f.). -- Verbs: 1. ὀμβρέω, - ῆσαι, also with ἀν-, ἐπ- a.o., `to (make) rain, to bewet' (Hes., LXX, A. R.) with ( ἐπ-)όμβρησις f. `raining etc.' (Suid., sch.), ὄμβρημα n. `rainwater' (LXX); 2. ὀμβρίζω = - έω (Eust.); 3. ὀμβροῦται imbricitur (Gloss.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: With ὄμβρος one compares first Lat. imber, - ris -n. `rain(shower)' with the same meaning with perh. second. i-flexion; Further, with slightly deviating meaning, Skt. abhrá-m n. `cloud'. One assumed that β after nasal could represent an aspirate, which is wrong (pace Schwyzer 333), so abhra- must be left out (for imber also * embhro- is possible). One assumed in these words an r-stem and beside it an s-stem, which was seen in Skt. ámbhas n. `water', also `rainwater' [for the same reason Arm. amb, amp, gen. -oy `cloud' must be left out.] -- There is no connection with νέφος, νεφέλη etc. -- Further several Europ. rivernames of Celt. origin(?) have been compared with ὄμβρος, e.g. NHG Amper, Engl. Amber. -- So wrong Pok. 315f. - So ομβρος has no etymology; Szemerenyi, Syncope 241f, 249 assumes a loanword (= a Pre-Greek word).Page in Frisk: 2,384-385Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὄμβρος

65 σκάλλω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to hack, to scrape' (Hdt., Arist., Thphr., LXX).Other forms: only pres. a. ipf. (aor. ipv. περίσκαλον Gp.; correct?)Compounds: Rarely w. δια- a. o. (partly controversial).Derivatives: 1. σκαλ-ίς, - ίδος f. `hack' (Att. onscr. IVa, Str., J.) with - ιδεύω `to hack' (gloss.); 2. - σις f. `the hacking' (Thphr.); 3. - μός m. `id.' (pap. IIIp; on σκαλμός `thole' s. v.); 4. - ηνός (- ηνής) `craggy, rough, uneven'; of numbers `odd', of triangles `scalene', of cones `slant' (s. Mugler Dict. géom. 377; Democr. ap. Thphr., Hp., Pl., Arist. etc.; on the formation cf. γαληνός; s. also σκολιός) with - ηνία, - ηνόομαι (Plu.); 5. ἄ-σκαλος `unhacked' (Theoc.; prob. metri c. for ἀσκάλευτος). Secondary verbs: 1. σκαλ-εύω, aor. σκαλεῦσαι, also w. ἀνα-, ἐκ-, ὑπο- a. o. `to hack, to scrape, to stir up' (Hp., Ar., Arist. etc.) with several derivv.: σκαλ-εύς m. `hack' (X., Poll.; not with Bosshardt 54 from *σκαλή), - ευσις f. `the scraping' (Aq.), - ευμα n. `scrapings' (sch., H.), - ευθρον n. `poker' (Poll.; cf. Bechtel Dial. 1, 210), - εία f. `the hacking' (Gp. tit.). 2. σκαλ-ίζω (ἀ- σκάλλω) `id.' (Phryn.) with - ισμός m. `the hacking' (pap., Eun.), - ιστή-ριον n. `hack' (sch.). - On σκαλίας s.v.Etymology: As zero grade yot-present σκάλλω can be formally identified with Lith. skiliù, inf. skìlti `strike fire': IE *skl̥-i̯ō [but the accent shows that the root is disyllabic; s. bel.]. Semantically closer are the innovated nasalpresents skįlù (skylù) `split off, get a tear' and the full grade skeliù, skélti `split', also `strike fire (ùgnį) (from a stone)', the last of which is also found in Germ., e.g. ONord. skilja `separate, distinguish'. Diff. again MLG schelen `id.' (PGm. * skelōn; type Lat. secāre), Arm. c'elum `split' (u-pesent; anlaut unclear), Hitt. iškallāi- `split, tear apart' (formation uncertain; s. Kronasser Etymologie $ 200 f., 214). -- The Greek derivv. go all back on ungeminated σκαλ-, which must not be old, but may have originated after σφαλ- (: σφάλλω), θαλ- (: θ άλλω) etc. Sophie Minon ( RPh. LXXIV 282) reconstructs *skl̥h₁-ye\/o-, assuming that the laryngeal disappeared in this position, after Pinault 1982, 265-272; cf. LIV 500. On σκαλαθύρω s.v. -- To the same formal system, but independent of σκάλλω, belong also σκαλμός `thole', σκῶλος, σκόλοψ etc.; s. vv. A clear separation from the semant. cognate κολάπτω, κόλος, κλάω, κελεός etc. cannot be achieved; [not here σκύλλω]. -- The non-Greek formations are innumerable; on this WP. 2, 590ff., Pok. 923ff. w. rich lit.Page in Frisk: 2,715-716Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σκάλλω
