I [ɔːl] adjвесь, все, всё, всяUSAGE and CHOICE OF WORDS:
(1.) Русским весь, все соответствуют в английском языке all и whole, которые различаются как употреблением, так и типом имен существительных, которые они определяют. Оба слова, all и whole, употребляются с: (а.) абстрактными существительными; (б) со словами day, night, weak, month, year, world; (с) с названиями городов, стран и континентов, но требуют разных конструкций: all стоит перед определенным артиклем и другим определителем имени существительного, к которому оно относится: all the day; all his life; all British islands, a whole стоит после таких определителей: the whole year; his whole life; the whole Europe; the whole of Europe. Кроме того, all может сочетаться с существительным без посредства других определителей (артикля, местоимения, предлога, прилагательных): all night; a whole требует обязательного определителя: the whole night, his whole life, all year, all the year, all the academic year, all my students cp. the whole year, the whole of the academic year, his whole life. С абстрактными существительными предпочтительно употребление whole: the whole time все время; the whole truth вся правда. С названием веществ употребляется только all: all the bread весь хлеб; all the snow весь снег; all the water вся вода. All употребляется как с неисчисляемыми существительными, так и с исчисляемыми существительными во множественном числе и с группой слов, указанных ранее. С исчисляемыми существительными в единственном числе обычно употребляется whole: he whole story весь рассказ; the whole apple целое яблоко. (2.) See both, adj; USAGE (2.). (3.) See every, adj; USAGE (2.).

103 Camões, Luís de
(1525?-1579 or 1580)Portugal's national epic poet of the Age of Discoveries and author of the most celebrated piece of national literature, Luís de Camoes's lifespan marked both the high tide and ebbing of Portuguese imperial power. Educated at the University of Coimbra, Camões for much of his life, most of which remains largely unknown, was an adventurer overseas. He served as a soldier in Morocco, as Portugal began to lose its hold on parts of Morocco, and was later imprisoned. After his release, he shipped out to Portuguese India, to Goa, where he served the king. He lived in Portuguese India, Macau, and Mozambique, and his Eastern years left a permanent mark on his mind and soul. Upon his return to Portugal, he continued writing as a poet, and in 1572, his most famous work, better known and more quoted than any other piece of the nation's literature, Os Lusíadas (The Lusiads), was published in Lisbon. Whatever the reception of his epic poem, the story of the great Vasco da Gama's voyage to India (1497-99) within the context of the history of Portugal, Camões cannot have gained a great deal from its publication. It is said that he fell into poverty, that a servant or friend of his was forced to beg for food for Camões, and that he died in misery. In Portuguese tradition, it is also recounted that before he died he was informed of the disastrous battle of Alcácer- Quivir in 1578 and the resulting loss of the king, his army, and any defenses remaining to Portugal. Camões, the story goes, exclaimed, "I die with the Fatherland!" -

108 Goddard, Dr Robert Hutchings
SUBJECT AREA: Aerospace[br]b. 5 October 1882 Worcester, Massachusetts, USAd. 10 August 1945 Baltimore, Maryland, USA[br]American inventory developer of rocket propulsion.[br]At the age of seventeen Goddard climbed a tree and, seeing the view from above, he became determined to make some device with which to ascend towards the planets. In an autobiography, published in 1959 in the journal Astronautics, he stated, "I was a different boy when I descended the ladder. Life now had a purpose for me." His first idea was to launch a projectile by centrifugal force, but in 1909 he started to design a rocket that was to be multi-stage and fuelled by liquid oxygen and hydrogen. Not long before the First World War he produced a report, "A method of reaching extreme altitudes", which was for the Smithsonian Institution and was published in book form in 1919. During the war he worked on solid-fuelled rockets as weapons. His book contained notes on the amount of fuel required to raise 1 lb (454 g) of payload to an infinite altitude. He incurred ridicule as "the moon man" when he proposed the use of flash powder to indicate successful arrival on the moon. In 1923 he severed his connections with military work and returned to the University of Massachusetts. On 16 March 1926 he launched the world's first liquid-fuelled rocket from his aunt's farm in Auburn, Massachusetts; powered by gasoline and liquid oxygen, it flew to a height of 12 m (40 ft) and travelled 54 m (177 ft) in 2.4 seconds. In November 1929 he met the aviator Charles Lindbergh, who persuaded both the Guggenheim Foundation and the Carnegie Institute to support Goddard's experiments financially. He moved to the more suitable location of the Mescalere Ranch, near Roswell, New Mexico, where he worked until 1941. His liquid-fuelled rockets reached speeds of 1,100 km/h (700 mph) and heights of 2,500 m (8,000ft). He investigated the use of the gyroscope to steady his rockets and the assembly of power units in clusters to increase the total thrust. In 1941 he moved to the naval establishment at Annapolis, Maryland, working on liquid-fuelled rockets to assist the take-off of aircraft from carriers. He worked for the US Government on this and the development of military rockets until his death from throat cancer in 1945. In all, he was granted 214 patents, roughly three per year of his life.In 1960 the US Government admitted infringement of Goddard's patents during the rocket programme of the 1950s and awarded his widow a payment of $1,000,000, while the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) honoured him by naming the Goddard Spaceflight Center near Washington, DC, after him. The Goddard Memorial Library at Clark University, in his home town of Worcester, Massachusetts, was also named in his honour.[br]Further ReadingA.Osman, 1983, Space History, London: Michael Joseph. 120 whole
a целый, весь (1). Русскому весь, все соответствуют в английском языке whole и all, которые различаются местом в предложении и типом существительного, которое они определяют. Прилагательное whole образует предложные и беспредложные конструкции: the whole truth, the whole of the truth (cp. all his life, all of his life); whole, в отличие от all, стоит в предложении после определенного артикля или другого детерминатива, который не может быть опущен: the whole world, his whole life the, whole of Europe (cp. all Europe); the whole day (cp. all day). С абстрактными и с исчисляемыми существительными в единственном числе предпочтительно употреблять whole: the whole time или the whole of the time, the whole story. С существительными — названиями городов, стран, континентов, а также со словами day, month, night, week, world, year могут употребляться и whole, и all в соответствующих конструкциях: the whole Europe, the whole of Europe, но all Europe, the whole of London, the whole London, но all London. (2). See all, a.
