1 not ready for prime time
•• * В одной из статей о перспективах установления демократического режима в Ираке встретилась следующая фраза: Perhaps it won’t work. Maybe the Iraqis are not ready for prime time yet. Вспомнились 1970-е годы, Чеви Чейс, покойные Джон Белуши и Гилда Раднер, передача Saturday Night Live на NBC. Если еще сравнительно недавно это выражение можно было считать аллюзией или своего рода цитатой, то сейчас это, на мой взгляд, вошедшее в язык фразеологическое сочетание. Пока его удалось найти включенным только во Free Online Dictionary of Computing:
•• Not ready for prime time: Usable, but only just so; not very robust; for internal use only. Said of a program or device. <...> This term comes from the ensemble name of the original cast of “ Saturday Night Live,” the “Not Ready for Prime Time Players.”
•• Действительно, это выражение часто используется в материалах по компьютерной тематике. Например:
•• Web Services: Not Ready for Prime Time <...> had sound and X-server config problems – again, on the desktop, not ready for prime time.
•• Но оно все чаще встречается и в других контекстах. Вот заголовок статьи о новом подсластителе:
•• Stevia: Not Ready For Prime Time. More Research Needed To Answer Safety Questions About “ Natural” Sweetener.
•• И, наконец, проникновение в политическую лексику, отмеченное выше.
•• Еще пример – заголовок полемической статьи о кандидате на пост губернатора одного из штатов:
•• Candidate Not Ready for Prime Time. И далее в тексте: It has become clear that she is not ready to govern the state.
•• В технических текстах перевести это выражение можно при помощи русского довести до ума ( новое изделие еще нужно довести до ума или просто нуждается в доводке). В заголовке Linux in China: Not Ready for Prime Time подойдет условия еще не созрели. Не созрели хорошо и в политическом контексте, но иногда придется добавить косвенное дополнение. В первом примере: Возможно, иракцы еще не созрели для демократии. В последнем: Кандидат еще не созрел можно добавить для большой политики.

may be prefixed to almost every adjective and adverb in an intensive sense, very, extremely.* * *may in old writers be prefixed to almost every adjective and adverb in an intensive sense, like Engl. very, Lat. per-, Gr. οια-, ζα-. Рис. ABBThe AC mains voltage (50/60 Hz) applied at the input side is transformed to a lower level and rectifi ed by a subsequent rectifi er. Then, a capacitor C smoothes the output voltage of the rectifi er. The dimension of the transformer depends on the desired output voltage.
Due to the design of the electric circuit, the output voltage directly depends on the input voltage which in turn means that variations of the mains voltage have direct effect to the output side. Since no regulation is done on the secondary side, the residual ripple of the output voltage is in the dimension of volts and specifi ed as a percentage of the DC output voltage.
Due to their simple design, unregulated power supplies are very robust and durable. Their effi ciency is approx. 80 %.
Unregulated power supplies are primarily used for simple electromechanical applications that do not require exact output voltages, e.g. for the supply of contactors.
