Schwyzer 682 f. - Only formally different are: Lat. madeō `be moist, drip, be drunk' (after the intransitives in - ēre), OIr. maidim `break (out)' (intr.), `fall to pieces' (from *'flow out, away' v.t.; can be formally identical with madeō), Skt. mádati (themat. root-pres.), ma-mát-ti (redupl.) a. o. `be drunken, fuddle oneself, swallow, be marry'; further connections, partly uncertain, in Bq, WP. 2, 230ff., Pok. 694f., W.-Hofmann s. madeō; ib. more lit. Attempt to identify μαδαρός and Lat. madidus (\< - iro-s?), in Bloch Sprachgesch. u. A.1?), marya-ká- `small man'. The diminutive derivv. in Greek ousted the basic word. A fem. *μεῖρα (like στεῖρα) may be also considered. -- As remote cognates are adduced Lith. mergà `girl' and, with diff. vowel, Alb. shemërë f. `by-wife' (from *sm̥-me), Lith. martì f. `bride, young woman' (cf. Slav., e.g. Sloven. glíva `agaric' to Lith. gleĩvės `slime' etc. (Schulze KZ 45, 189 = Kl. Schr. 619); further s. μύσσομαι. -- Diff. (hesitating) Strömberg Pflanzennamen 28: from μῦς `mouse' because of the grey colour as Fr. gris souris name of a mushroom. But μύκης is not only a grey mushroom, and its formation is unclear. Fur. 298 thinks correctly that the meanings of this word cannot be all explained from a derivation from μύσσομαι `snuff, blow one's nose' and assumes a basic meaning `prominent, extremity'. He connects the word with μύσκλοι οἱ πυθμένες τῶν ξηρῶν σύκων Η, which implies that the word is Pre-Greek. On the suffix - ης, - ητος (in Pre-Greek) s. p. 172 n. 118.

Fr.260; unterital. `with small ears', Rohlfs ByzZ 37, 58f.), μυναρός (H.) `id.'. On itself sands μύρκος ὁ καθόλου μη δυνάμενος λαλεῖν. Συρακούσιοι. ἐνεός, ἄφωνος H.; μυρικᾶς ἄφωνος, ἐν ἑαυτῳ̃ ἔχων ο μέλλει πράττειν H. (cf. v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 42). -- From sound imitating , s. μύω (?); on the dental-formations cf. Lat. mūtus, s. further W.-Hofmann on mūtus; with μύνδος (s.v.) Arm. munǰ `dumb' (\< *mun(d)i̯os?); s. auch 1. mundus. With μύρκος agrees formally Lat. murcus `mutilated', esp. of him, who, so as not to become soldier, cuts off his thumbs; it could be a loan from Lat. in Sicil. (rather than the other way round), s. W.-Hofmann s.v. - μύνδος may have prenasal. beside μύδος (and must therefore be retained; against Latte, whose note is not clear to me). I think that μυναρός is a misreading for *μυνδρος. (s. κόρη); μωλυ-ρός like ἐχυρός, καπυρός a.o. (hardly with Benveniste Origines 36 to μωλύνω with ρ: ν -change), if not dissimilated from - υλός (cf. Leumann Glotta 32, 223 A. 2 = Kl. Schr. 249 n. 3). -- Because of the not very clear meaning and the unclear formation etymologically hard to asses. By Fick 23, 189, Bq a.o. connected with μέλεος (acc. to Bechtel Lex, 224f. and Specht KZ 59, 93 also ἀμβλύς); rejected by WP. 2, 285. After Prellwitz BB 26, 310 (accepted by WP. 2, 301 and Pok. 746) however to μῶλος. Diff. again H. Petersson Et. Miszellen 18: μωλύω to μολούω (s. μολεύω) as κωλύω to κολούω. -- Everything hypothetic. - The suffix - υκ- looks Pre-Greek.

Little value has the comparison with Etr. zamθic supposedly `of gold' (Brandenstein P.-W. 7 n, 1919), with which Heubeck Würzb. Jb. 4, 202 wants to draw also Σκάμανδρος. -- Cf. ξουθός. The word may be Pre-Greek.

    Etymology: The adj. can be identcal with Arm. aɫk`at `poor' (\< * oliko- \< * h₃ligo-). Alb. lig `angry, meagre', but this may rather belong to λοιγός `ruin' (s. v.). Less clear are OIr. līach `miserable, unhappy' and OPr. licuts `small' (which fits well semantically), which have *k. There is no reason to connect λοιγός `ruin'.

Old is the comparison with Skt. vrścáti `hew, fell (trees), split', with yūpa-vrask-á- `post-cutter' and the ptc. vr̥k-ṇá- `hewn, felled', which may stand for *vr̥ṣk-ṇá- and so makes a possible basis *ŭr̥k-nó- (= Gr. *Ϝρακ-) unnecessary. The from this reconstructed IE *u̯resk-, *u̯rosk- has a variant in the Slav. word for `rumple' (cf. ῥάκος, also `rumple'), e.g. Russ.-CSl. vraska from *u̯orsk-ā. Toch. A wraske `disease' is phonetically unclear and lies semant. far off. As well as everything non-Christian, it includes the striving after worldly wisdom: συζητητὴς τοῦ αἰ. τούτου searcher after the wisdom of this world 1 Cor 1:20. σοφία τοῦ αἰ. τούτου 2:6. ἐν τῷ αἰ. τούτῳ 3:18 prob. belongs to what precedes=those who consider themselves wise in this age must become fools (in the estimation of this age). The ruler of this age is the devil: ὁ θεὸς τοῦ αἰ. τούτου 2 Cor 4:4 (θεός 5). ἄρχων τοῦ αἰ. τούτου IEph 17:1; 19:1; IMg 1:3; ITr 4:2; IRo 7:1; IPhld 6:2; his subordinate spirits are the ἄρχοντες τοῦ αἰ. τούτου 1 Cor 2:6, 8 (ἄρχων 1c).—Also ὁ νῦν αἰών (Did., Gen. 148, 21): πλούσιοι ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰ. 1 Ti 6:17; ἀγαπᾶν τὸν νῦν αἰ. 2 Ti 4:10; Pol 9:2.     ὁ αἰὼν μέλλων (הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא) the age to come, the Messianic period (on the expr. cp. Demosth. 18, 199; Hippocr., Ep. 10, 6 ὁ μ. αἰ.=the future, all future time; Ael. Aristid. 46 p. 310 D.: ἡ τοῦ παρελθόντος χρόνου μνεία κ. ὁ τοῦ μέλλοντος αἰῶνος λόγος; Jos., Ant. 18, 287; Ar. 15, 3; Orig., C. Cels. 8, 24, 20; Did., Gen. 164, 2) in 2 Cl 6:3, cp. Hs 4:2ff, opposed to the αἰὼν οὗτος both in time and quality, cp. Mt 12:32; Eph 1:21; δυνάμεις μέλλοντος αἰ. Hb 6:5. As a holy age ὁ ἅγιος αἰ. (opp. οὗτος ὁ κόσμος; cp. εἰς τὸν μείζονα αἰ. TestJob 47:3) B 10:11 and as a time of perfection αἰ. ἀλύπητος an age free from sorrow 2 Cl 19:4 (cp. αἰ. … τοῦ ἀπαραλλάκτου TestJob 33:5), while the present αἰών is an ‘aeon of pain’ (Slav. Enoch 65, 8).—The plurals 1 Cor 10:11 have been explained by some as referring to both ages, i.e. the end-point of the first and beginning of the second; this view urges that the earliest Christians believed that the two ages came together during their own lifetimes: we, upon whom the ends of the ages have come (JWeiss. A Greek would not refer to the beginning as τέλος. The Gordian knot has οὔτε τέλος οὔτε ἀρχή: Arrian, Anab. 2, 3, 7). But since τὰ τέλη can also mean ‘end’ in the singular (Ael. Aristid. 44, 17 K.=17 p. 406 D.: σώματος ἀρχαὶ κ. τέλη=‘beginning and end’; 39 p. 737 D.: τὰ τέλη … δράματος; Longus 1, 23, 1 ms. ἦρος τέλη; Vi. Thu. 2, 2 [=OxfT ΘΟΥΚΥΔΙΔΟΥ ΒΙΟΣ 2] τέλη τοῦ πολέμου; Aëtius, Eye Diseases p. 120, 25 Hirschb. after Galen: τὰ τέλη τ. λόγου=the close of the section; Philo, Virt. 182) and, on the other hand, the pl. αἰῶνες is often purely formal (s. above 1a and b, 2a at end) τὰ τέλη τῶν αἰ. can perh. be regarded as equal to τέλος αἰώνων (SibOr 8, 311)=the end of the age(s). Cp. TestLevi 14:1 ἐπὶ τὰ τέλη τῶν αἰώνων.—For the essential equivalence of sing. and pl. cp. Maximus Tyr. 14, 8b τὰ τῆς κολακείας τέλη beside τέλος τῆς σπουδῆς. Cp. also τέλος 5.

    βρύχω impf. ἔβρυχον; fut. 3 sg. βρύξει; 1 aor. 3 sg. ἔβρυξεν LXX to grind one’s teeth, gnash, a sign of violent rage (Theodor. Prodr. 5, 49 H.) τοὺς ὀδόντας ἐπʼ αὐτόν they gnashed their teeth against him Ac 7:54 (cp. Lex. Vind. p. 34, 5 βρύχει τ. ὀδόντας ἄνθρωπος, βρυχᾶται δὲ λέων=humans gnash their teeth, lions roar; Job 16:9; Ps 34:16; 36:12; SibOr 2, 203; Hippocr., 8 p. 16 [Mul. 1, 2], Epid. 5, 86 and other medical wr. [Hobart 208] of chattering of the teeth in chills and fevers). The expression may also be intended as metaph. become enraged (so NRSV with others, unless the translators are thinking in terms of functional equivalence).—Frisk.
