Por todo esto, la lucha que se desarrollaba debajo de aquella escalera de hierro, era la de correr con grande prisa y disciplina, para poder huir con tiempo de aquel infernal peligro, que algunos compañeros nuestros de otras campanas más desgraciadas que la que yo dirigía, les había arrancado la vida. Xardu, lugar situado encima del lar, haciendo piso a nivel del desván, es en definitiva un cajón de tres metros cuadrados aproximadamente, los hay más grandes y también más pequeños depende en la teixá que se encuentren, de todas las maneras en todas las teixáes astures que tienen castañedos, también tienen, o mejor dicho tenían xardu, tengan presente ustedes que yo siempre me estoy refiriendo a los tiempus d'endenantes. Decía del Xardu que tenía la capacidad hablada, con una altura de un cuarto de metro aproximadamente también, su fondo esta tillado con delgadas rojas de madera de fresno, roble, encina, o madera dura en forma triangular, formando rejas por así decirlo, por entre las cuales se introducía el humo y el calor del llar, tras un tiempo, que bien pudiera estar en la función de la necesidad del índole de abundancia, que obligaba atizar el fuego con leñas apropiadas que produjesen mucho humo y a la par calor, con el fin de curar pronto las castañas para de nuevo llenar oitre xarducáu d'echas. Una vez que las castañas ya estuviesen bien curadas para mayalas, que uno lo sabe al tocarlas siempre que sea entendido, se sacan del xardu por un pequeño ventano que tiene para tal menester el xardu, y se meten en la goxa, un buen xardáu puede tener dos goxadinas, y en éstas se majan con un mayu de madera especial para este menester, una vez bien mayadas, que también se aprecia por el estar sous cortexus esfechus en polvo, se banan y aquí tenemos las llamadas castañas mayucas. —Del Xardu se puéen falar memplenáu de couxes ya toes eches cheldadedes nel vivir de les xentes de cá díe, ya tóu ye anxina, perqu'el xardu ye la cobertoria 'l chare per anxín falare, ya 'l chare ye xin dalgún zacadiétchu la mesma entraña de les xentes de la teixá. En esta categoría existen secretos y rituales desconocidos para los que no pertenecen a ella. Una santera vieja me dice que "muchos babalawós solamente tienen el santo lavado, pero no asentado", por lo que no pueden pasar al cuarto de asiento. El santero necesita del babalawó para sacar el "itá" de quien hace santo. Tres babalawó son necesarios en rigor ritual para "bajar Orula"; en casos muy especiales se han necesitado más, hasta doce. Menos de tres no pueden bajar a Orula. El babalawó, como el santero, tiene "Ilé Ocha", hijos y conducta ritual general muy semejante a la del santero.
