¿To see, to watch o to look?
Los tres verbos reflejan tres conceptos muy distintos. To see hace referencia a la capacidad visual y no es fruto de una acción deliberada. A menudo se usa con can o could: I can see the mountains from my bedroom. Puedo ver las montañas desde mi dormitorio.
To look at implica una acción deliberada: I saw an old atlas, so I opened it and looked at the maps. Vi un atlas antiguo, así que lo abrí y miré los mapas.
To watch también se refiere a una acción deliberada, a menudo cuando se tiene un interés especial por lo que ocurre: I watched the planes in the sky with great interest. Miraba los aviones en el cielo con gran interés. Igualmente puede indicar el paso del tiempo (we watched the animals playing for half an hour, durante media hora observamos cómo jugaban los animales), movimiento (they stood there watching the cars drive off into the distance, se quedaron allí de pie viendo cómo se marchaban los coches) o vigilancia (the policemen have been watching this house because they thought we were thieves, los policías estaban vigilando la casa porque pensaban que éramos ladrones).
Para hablar de películas u obras de teatro usamos to see: Have you seen Hamlet?, ¿Has visto Hamlet? To watch se refiere a la televisión y los deportes en general: I always watch the television in the evening. Siempre veo la televisión por las noches. I like to watch football. Me gusta ver el fútbol. Al hablar de programas o partidos específicos podemos usar tanto to watch como to see: I like to see/watch the news at 9:00. Me gusta ver las noticias a las 9.00. Did you see/watch the match last night?, ¿Viste el partido anoche?

Y hasta los mismos perros de mi aldeina, que todos muchas veces jugaban conmigo y yo los halagaba, me miraban sonrientes y felices, pareciéndome a mí que hasta me profesaban mayor respeto, al no ponerme sus patas cariñosamente encima de mi para saludarme como casi siempre hacían, aunque estaba yo bien alerta para que en aquel suceder no lo hiciesen. —Llegue a la casa de Teobaldo que era otro mozalbete de mi tiempo, que haba ido muchas veces a Oviedo, y cuando me vió, hasta me dijo, que si no fuese por las alpargatas blancas, iba también vestido como un príncipe. —Y fue Teobaldo precisamente, por el aquel de haber estado muchas veces en Oviedo, el que me hizo creer con más profundidad en riego, que aquel para mi dichoso día, en la fiesta de la Virgen de la Montaña, iba yo a cortejar a la más hermosa muchacha. —Me recuerdo que cuando salimos de nuestra aldea camino de la fiesta de la Granda, serian las dos de la tarde próximamente, encontrándose nuestra aldea tapada por la niebla, aunque de ésta no cala ni una sola gota de agua. Cogimos el atajo que había por el monte para llegar más pronto a la aldea de Traspena donde se celebraba la fiesta, y cuanto mas subíamos por el camino del puerto del Collado, que era el trecho más corto, la niebla más densa se hacía a la vez que de ella ya se desprendía una fina llovizna, y cuando llegamos a lo más alto del puerto ya la niebla lloraba con lágrimas tan finas como la punta de las agujas, y a la par que tan densa se había hecho, que casi no nos avistábamos uno al otro. —Yo que por aquellos tiempos corría lo mismo que los corzos aquel día me parecía, que aquel traje me apretaba el cuerpo ordeñándome mis fuerzas, pero luego me dije, que a lo mejor era que yo por mor del nuevo traje andaba de diferente manera. El caso fue, que cuando hicimos una parada para que Teobaldo liara un cigarrillo, comenzó este a deshacerse de risa mirando para mí y señalándome guasonamente con el dedo, fue entonces cuando remiré con atención mi traje y comprendí que había encogido casi una cuarta, lo mismo en las perneras que en las mangas, y seguro que lo mismo le sucedería a todo el traje. Quíteme luego la chaqueta con grande cuidado para no romperla ya que estaba aprisionada a mi cuerpo, y comencé en el estirar sus mangas con el mismo cuidado que se usa para acariciar a los niños, pues temor tenía que al estirarla se me despedazara, pero fue lo mismo, porque aquella prenda tal me parecía que cada vez se tornaba más pequeña. Teobaldo no paraba de reírse sin preocuparse de ninguna cosa, mientras que yo desilusionado y lleno de tristeza no paraba de pensar, siempre en el hacer de buscar la solución a mi problema, por último llegue a la conclusión, que si el traje que estaba del todo mojado por la llovizna de la niebla, con el agua el condenado se encogía, a lo mejor secándole bien volvía otra vez a su posición de nuevo. Esperar tiene tres significados básicos, que corresponden a tres verbos ingleses:
Aguardar, en sentido general, se traduce por to wait: Llevo media hora esperándote, I've been waiting for you for half an hour.
Tener esperanza, desear, se traduce por to hope: Espero que vengas mañana. I hope you will come tomorrow. Espero que sí. I hope so.
Suponer, esperar algo sabiendo que es muy probable que ocurra, se traduce por to expect: Espero la visita de un amigo (sabemos que va a venir). I'm expecting a friend to call.
