Aunque antes la fiesta se asociaba con la creencia de que las almas de los difuntos regresaban a sus hogares en esa fecha, actualmente Hallowe'en no es más que un pretexto para la diversión. Los niños se disfrazan de fantasmas y brujas y hacen farolillos con calabazas vacías en cuyo interior colocan una vela. Así vestidos, van de casa en casa por todo el barrio pidiendo caramelos y dinero, una costumbre que se conoce sobre todo en Estados Unidos como trick or treat porque los niños amenazan con gastarle una broma al dueño de la casa si no reciben los caramelos. También suelen celebrarse en Hallowe'en fiestas de disfraces para niños y para adultos. -

Hallowe'en [‚hæləʊ'i:n]= veille de la Toussaintⓘ HALLOWE'EN Il s'agit d'une fête d'origine païenne célébrée dans les pays anglo-saxons la veille de la Toussaint, à l'époque de l'année où les morts étaient censés rendre visite aux vivants. Aujourd'hui la tradition demeure: on évide des citrouilles pour les transformer en lanternes en forme de crâne, et les enfants vont de maison en maison déguisés en sorcières ou en fantômes. De nos jours, la coutume britannique a adopté la tradition américaine de "trick or treat", consistant pour les enfants à demander un petit cadeau aux habitants des maisons visitées et à les menacer d'un mauvais tour s'ils refusent. -
