Государственная политика, разрешающая свободное колебание курса валюты данной страны и не предусматривающая проведения прямых интервенций на валютных рынках. На практике “чистое” плавание встречается редко, так как правительства часто испытывают искушение регулировать валютные курсы путем прямых интервенций с использованием государственных резервов. Такая политика иногда называется “регулируемым” плаванием валютных курсов (managed floating) (см. также: managed currency( управляемая валюта)). Однако “чистое” плавание не обязательно означает, что обменные курсы не контролируются вообще, так как государство может оказывать на них воздействие путем проведения определенной денежно-кредитной политики.
