7 νῶροψ
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: ?Other forms: only in νώρ-οπι, - οπα as adjunct of χαλκῳ̃, - όν (Horn.); after this νώροπι πέπλῳ (Nonn.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Adjective of unknown meaning (cf. H. νῶροψ λαμπρός, ὀξύφωνος, ἔνηχος. η ὅτι την ὄψιν ἀσθενῆ ποιεῖ), so without explanation. Often connected with ἀνήρ, so esp. by Kuiper (s. ἀνήρ). Acc. to Bechtel Lex. s.v. to νωρεῖ ἐνεργεῖ H., Lith. nóriu, -ė́ti `will' etc., which have also been compared with with ἀνήρ; s. except Kuiper l.c. WP. 2, 332f., Pok. 765, W.-Hofmann s. neriōsus. (But one would expect * nuoras, Fraenkel s.v.) Quite diff. Kretschmer Glotta 32, 3 ff. with Epaphroditos of Chaeroneia: to Νώρακος πόλις Παννονὶας, " ὅτι γίνεται ἐν Παννονίᾳ σίδηρος". - The suffix - οπ- may point to a Pre-Greek word (Kuiper suggest ed that it was taken from αἴθοπι.)Page in Frisk: 2,Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > νῶροψ

8 ἀκτίς
ἀκτίς, - ῖνοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `ray, beam of light' (Il.), also `spoke of a wheel' (AP).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: ἀκτίς is built like δελφίς, γλωχίς, ὠδίς and prob. derived from a noun. Resembles Skt. aktú- most, but its meaning is very difficult (s. Renou Monographies sanskrites 2, 6; Kuiper Vāk 2, 81f, 89f); one meaning seems to be `night', the other has been derived from añj- `smear'; Kuiper thinks it means `ray, light'. As `night' it has been connected with Goth. uhtwo f. (PGm. * uŋχtwōn- \< *n̥kʷt-u-) `dawn' (Lith. ankstì `early' requires an initial laryngeal, which excludes derivation from `night', as Gr. νύξ shows that there was no laryngeal.) ἀκτίς can have had * h₂- (which is impossible for aktú-) as well as *n̥-, but not *h₂n̥-, which would give ἀν-), nor labio-velar.Page in Frisk: 1,61Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀκτίς

9 ἀνθρηδών
ἀνθρηδών, - όνοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `hornet' (D. S.)Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: No doubt a substatum word. Beside ἀνθρηδών, ἀνθρήνη we find τενθρηδών f. (Arist.), τενθρήνη (Nik.); τενθρήνιον (Arist.). There are several forms which lack the first nasal: τεθρηνιώδης (Hp.), ἀθρήνη (Suidas etc.) and without red. or ἀ-, θρήνη, (Eust.), θρηνώδης (Democr. ap. Ael.); Winter Proth. Vok. 45. Cf. further θρῶναξ κηφήν. Λάκωνες H. (I know of no other cases with η\/ω). Note also πεμφρηδών f. `a wasp' (Nic.). So we have a root θρη\/ ων- with prothetic vowel or reduplication (cf. κεκρύφαλος, Σίσυφος) and prenasalization; Kuiper FS Kretschmer 221f. For ν\/δ cf. perhaps φληναφάω - φληδῶντα. Πεμφρηδών may show that the word had a labio-velar (Beekes Glotta 73, 1995\/6, 12f.). - There is no ground to assume that τενθρήνη, τενθρηδών are dissimilated from *τερθρ-. Relation with ἀθήρ, ἀνθέριξ is therefore improbable. Not to θρέομαι, θόρυβος. - τεθρηδών πρωρεύς H. rather a joking formation of the sailors' language after the animal names in - ηδών (Chantr. Form. 360f.). A difficult problem is the relation to Germanic and Balto-Slavic words: OS dren, drāno (Germ. Drohne), Lith. trãnas; s. Kuiper l.c. 222.Page in Frisk: 1,110Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀνθρηδών

10 ἠπεροπεύς
Grammatical information: m.Derivatives: With ἠπεροπεύω, only present-stem `cheat, deceive' (Hom., Hes.) with ἠπεροπευτής (only voc. - τά Γ 39 = Ν 768, h. Merc. 282 u. a.; on the formation Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 20f., 2, 34) and ἠπερόπευμα (Critias).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Because of the rarity of the attestations one is prepared to accept, with Boßhardt Die Nomina auf - ευς 26 that ἠπεροπεύς is a retrograde deriv. of ἠπεροπεύω. Basic *ἠπερ-οψ, *ἠπερ-οπός, -ή has got many explanations: Skt. ápara- `more behind, other' (Curtius 263, Prellwitz BB 22, 112); Lat. săpiō (Solmsen KZ 42, 233 n. 1); Gr. ἤπιος (L. Meyer 1, 609); ἀπάτη (Kuiper Glotta 21, 283f.; vgl. s. v.). Kuiper's connection with ἀπατ-άω is most attractive. There is no good IE etymology, so a loan, i.e. a Pre-Greek word, is quite possible (thus DELG).Page in Frisk: 1,640Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἠπεροπεύς

11 κίνδυνος
Grammatical information: m.Compounds: as 2. member e. g. in ἐπι-κίνδυνος `connected with danger' (IA.).Derivatives: κινδυνώδης `dangerous' (Hp., Plb.), κινδυνεύω `take (the) risk' (IA.) with κινδύνευμα `risk' (S., E., Pl.), - ευτής `dare-devil' (Th., D. C.; cf. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 73), - ευτικός `dangerous, adventurous' (Arist.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: No etymology. The formally attractive connection with κίνδαξ, ὀνο-κίνδιος (which does not belong to κινεῖν! s.s.v.) from Prellwitz Wb., Vendryes REGr. 25, 461f., who compare further Lat. solli-citus `be in danger') gives semantically only one theoretical possibility. Hypothetical is also the proposal by Schulzes (in Sittig KZ 52, 207f.; agreeing a. o. Schwyzer 335, Specht KZ 66, 5), that κίνδυνος is an old expression of the game of dices with assimilation for *κύν-δυ-νος, from κύων as designation of an unsuccesful throw (as Skt. śvan-, Lat. canis; cf. on Κανδαύλης) and a word for `dice, -game' in Skt. dī́vyati `dice', dyūtá- n. `-game'; both phonetically and morphologically doubtfull, s. Kretschmer KZ 55, 90f.; rejected by Kuiper Μνήμης χάριν 1, 217 n. 26. S. also Taillardat, REAnc. 1956, 189-194. For foreign (Pre-Greek or (=) Anatolian) origin Debrunner Eberts Reallexikon 526, Kretschmer l. c. - On κίνδυνος = ἡ ἐν πρῴρα σελίς (H.), from where NGr. (Naxos) `bed', Andriotis Glotta 25, 19f. - Kuiper, GS Kretschmer. 1956, 217 gives κίνδῡν (Alc., Sapph.) as a true ending of a Pre-Greek word (not in Fur.).Page in Frisk: 1,854-855Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κίνδυνος

12 κύαμος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `bean' (Il.), `lot (those who drew white beans won)' (Att.), metaph. `swelling of the paps' (Ruf., Poll.), `woodlouse' (Gal.), name of a coin (Taurom. Ia).Compounds: Some cornpp., e.g. κυαμο-τρώξ `bean-eater' (Ar.), ὑοσ-κύαμος `swine-bean' (Hp., X.; 1. member peiorative, also connected with ὕειν `rain', Strömberg Pflanzennamen 31 a. 155). Unclear byform κύμηχα κύαμον H. (s. Fur. 120).Derivatives: Diminut. κυάμιον (Nubien, Eust.), - ίδες fabacia (Gloss.); κυάμ-ινος `of beans' (corn., Gal.), - ιαῖος `as great as a bean' (Dsc., Luc.); κυαμ-ίας m. `stone like a bean' (Plin.; as καπνίας a. o., Chantraine Formation 94), - ίτης m. `god of beans = chairman of the beanmarket' (Paus.), - ῖτις ( ἀγορά) `beanmarket' (Plu.), cf. Redard Les noms grecs en - της 193 a. 108; κυαμών, - ῶνος m. `field with beans' (Thphr.) with - ωνίτης `labourer of the beanfields' (pap.; Redard 37). Denomin. verbs: κυαμεύω `choose with the lot with beans' (Att.), - ίζω `be ripe for marriage' (Ar.). Beside κύαμος also πύανος (H., Poll., Phot.; after Heliod. Hist. 3 = ὁλόπυρος) with compound Πυαν-έψια, - όψια n. pl. name of an Ion.-Att. feast, fromwhere the month-name Πυανεψιών, - οψιών; also Κυαν-εψιών, - ο-(Keos, Asia Minor) and Παν-όψια (after Lycurg. Fr. 84 non-Att.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: The forms with - νεψ-, - νοψ- may have been dissimilated from - μεψ-, - μοψ-; the pair κυάμος: πύανος is diff. evaluated. After Specht KZ 69, 133 ff. *πύαμος (to IE. * pu-, * peu- `blow, swell') would be the original form, from where both κύαμος and πύανος originated. Brugmann (lastly 4 50) and Güntert Reimwortbildungen 124 f. consider, hardly probable, Πυαν-όψια, πύανος as a mixed form from Κυαν- and Παν-όψια, of which the latter from IE. ḱu̯-, "allegroform" of ḱuu̯- in κύαμος. In gen. κύαμος is considered as a foreign word (Chantraine Formation 133, Schwyzer 494, Krahe Die Antike 15, 181, Kuiper Μνήμης χάριν 1,215 w.n.19). However, κύαμος could also be IE. and be derived from κυέω, s. Bq and Strömberg Pflanzennamen 51 (but there is no IE - αμ-). - Fur., following Kuiper l.c., remarks that κυαμ- \/ κυμ-ηχ\/κ- proves the Pre-Greek character of the word. 13 μόθος
Grammatical information: m.Compounds: Comp. μοθούρας τὰς λαβὰς τῶν κωπῶν H. (expl. in Solmsen Wortforsch. 56 A. 2).Derivatives: μόθαξ, - ακος m. `children of the Helotes or Perioikoi, who has got a common education with a Spartan' (Phylarch. Hist. [IIIa], Plu., Ael.); μόθων, - ωνος m. = μόθαξ (sch., EM., H.), also about `impudent man' (Ar. Pl. 279), also parodising presented as demon (beside Κόβαλοι a.o., Ar. Eq. 635); name of a vulgar dance, practised by seamen (Ar., Poll.), also name of a melody on the flute accompanying the dance (Trypho ap. Ath. 14, 618 c). -- μοθωνικός `like the μόθωνες' (Ion ap. Plu. Per. 5), μοθωνία ἀλαζονεία τις τοῦ σώματος κινητική (EM).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: The relation between the words mentioned is not convincingly explained. Remarkable is esp. the great stilistic difference between ep. μόθος and Doric μόθαξ and μόθων. A common basic meaning `noise, tumbler(sic?)' does not help much. (I don't see a problem here.) -- Outside Greek no cognates. Against the connection with Slav., e.g. CS. motati sę `agitari', Russ. motátь `throw to and fro, waste, reel, wind up' (further forms in Vasmer s. mot) tells Gr. θ against Slav. t (cf. Meillet BSL 28, c. r. 79); against further connection of Skt. mánthati, mathnā́ti `stir, shake' (WP. 2, 269, Pok. 732, W.-Hofmann s. mamphur m.) further the inner nasal of the group menth- (Kuiper Nasalpräs. 104). Untenable Ehrlich KZ 41, 287f. (s. Bq and WP. l.c.); new theory by Kuiper l.c. n. 2: -o- Central Greek representative of IE *n̥ (to be rejected). - Perhaps the word is Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,248-249Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μόθος

14 πιέζω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to press, to push, beset' (Il.).Other forms: - έω (Hom. as v.l.; Hp., Herod., Plb.), aor. πιέσαι (IA.), pass. πιεσθῆναι (θ 336), also πι-έξαι, - εχθῆναι (Hp., Epidaur.); fut. πιέσω, perf. midd. πεπίεσμαι (Arist.; - ίεγμαι Hp.), act. πεπίεκα; besides πιάζω (Alcm., Alc., hell.). πιάσαι (- άξαι Theoc.), πιασθῆναι, πεπίασμαι (hell.), rarely w. ἐπ-, ἀπο- a.o.Derivatives: 1. πίε-(πία-)σις ( συν-, ἀπο-πιέζω) f. `pressing, pressure' (Pl., Arist.); 2. - σμός ( ἐκ-, συν- πιέζω a.o.) m. `id.' (Hp., Arist.); 3. - σμα ( ἀπο-, ἐκ- πιέζω a.o.) n. `pressure, pressed mass' (Hp., Eub.); 4. - στήρ m. `presser, press' (Att. inscr., medic.) with - στήριος `pressing', n. `press' (Dsc.); 5. - στρον n. `id.' (Hp., Gal.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: On πιεζ-έω as innovation beside older πιέζ-ω cf. κυρ-έω beside κύρ-ω a.o. (Schwyzer 721). Also πιάζω is an innovation (after the verbs in - άζω; perh. also phonet. explainable; s. Schwyzer 244 w. lit., a.o. Wackernagel IF 25, 336f. = Kl. Schr. 2, 1032 f.). -- Not certainly interpreted. Great semantic and phonetic similarity shows Skt. pīḍáyati `squeeze, press, hurt', which stands first for * pizd- and would give Gr. *πίζω. For it πιέζω after ἕζω (Schwyzer 721 n. 5)? Diff., very hard, Kuiper Acta Or. 12, 227f.: πιέζω from *pii̯es-dō as full grade of * pis-d- in Skt. pīḍ-. Further combinations hypothetic: * piz-d- from * pis-d- as d-enlargement of IE * pis- in Lat. pīnsō `pound, crush' (Fick, Curtius a. A.; cf. πτίσσω). -- Earlier (Brugmann, Osthoff etc.; s. Bq s.v. and WP. 2, 486 [Pok. 887]) from *(e)pi-sed-i̯ō resp. *( e)pi-zd- (\> pīḍáyati) prop. *"sit upon" = `squeeze' explained; against this Kuiper l.c. and Mayrhofer s.v. w. rich lit. and many details.Page in Frisk: 2,533-534Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πιέζω
