12 θρόνος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `throne, seat', also `chair of state, judge's seat'.Dialectal forms: Myc. tono, toronowokoCompounds: Compp., e. g. χρυσό-θρονος `with golden throne' (Il.)Derivatives: Diminutives θρονίς f. (Them.), θρόνιον (EM, Ptol.); further θρονίτης (cod. - τις) πρώτιστος H. (cf. Redard Les noms grecs en - της 24); θρονιτικός `throne-like' (Sidyma); denomin. verb θρονίζομαι `be placed on the throne' (LXX) with θρονιστής `enthroner' (liter. pap.), θρονισμός `enthronisation' (D. Chr.); also θρόνωσις `id.' (Pl. Euthd. 277d; as Rite of the Corybantes) as if from *θρονόομαι; cf. Chantraine Formation 279; on the facts v. Wilamowitz Glaube 2, 187.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Formation like κλ-όνος (from κέλομαι(?); cf. also χρόνος and Κρόνος), from a verb `hold, support, bear', seen e. g. in Skt. perf. dā̆dhā́ra (would be Gr. *τέ-θορ-α), in the athem. root aor. dhr̥-thās (2. sg.), perhaps also in ἐν-θρ-εῖν φυλάσσειν H. (s. θρησκεύω); θρόνος would then be prop. "supporter, bearer". Greek relatives are: θόρναξ ὑποποδιον. Κύπριοι. η ἱερὸν Άπόλλωνος ἐν τῃ̃ Λακωνικῃ̃ H., prob. for *θρόναξ through metathesis and so directly derived from θρόνος. Forms with θρᾱ- are too far away: θρή-σασθαι with θρᾶ-νος (s. v.), θρῆ-νυς; θρά̄-σκω with θρησκεύω (s. v.); there is no indication that they have enything to do with θρόνος. - Representatives in other languages, e. g. Lat. ferē, frētus, firmus, Skt. caus. dhāráyati, dhárma- `right, custom', dháraṇa- `holding', give nothing new for Greek. More forms Pok. 252f., W.-Hofmann s. firmus, ferē, Mayrhofer s. dhāráyati. - However, Greek has no forms in - ον-ος, only - ων, - ων-ος and - ων, - ον-ος (Chantr. Form. 159ff); there is no certain instance of IE - ον-ος (as opposed to roots with o-vocalism, like βρόμ-ος); on the other hand most Greek words in - ον-ος are suspected to be of Pre-Greek origin; also there is no word for `chair' derived from the root * dher- (Pok. 252f, nor is there any Greek substantive which is certainly derived from this root (Pok. 252). So we can be rather certain that this word is Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 1,686-687Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > θρόνος

13 Θρᾳ̃ξ
Θρᾳ̃ξ, -κόςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: `Thracian' (Il.); also as fishname, s. v θρᾳ̃τταOther forms: ep. Ion. Θρῆϊξ, - ῐκος (rarely and secondary -ῑκος), also Θρῃ̃ξ, - κός (Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 107); f. Θρᾳ̃σσα, - ττα, Θρῃ̃σσα, Θρήισσα, Θρέισσα, Θράισσα `Thracian woman' (IA, Dor.).Derivatives: Θρᾳ̃κη, Θρηΐκη, Θρῄκη `Thracia' (Il.); Θρᾳκιος etc. `Thracian' (Il.), - ικός `id.' (Luc.); Θρᾳκίας m. name of the N.-N.-W.-wind (Arist.; also Θρασκίας); θρᾳκίζω `speak Thracian' (A. D.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: On the vocalism in general Björck Alpha impurum 354f. Etymology unknown. Kretschmer Glotta 24, 39ff. considers connection with the river name Τραῦος (Hdt. 7, 109; tributary of the Bistonis-sea) and the Scythian (or Thracian) people's name Τραυσοί (Hdt. 5, 3, St. Byz., H. a. o.). Acc. to Kretschmer Glotta 26, 56 here also the wind name Θρασκίας (cross of Θρᾱικ- and Τραυσκ-?).Page in Frisk: 1,679Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > Θρᾳ̃ξ

17 ἀνθρηδών
ἀνθρηδών, - όνοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `hornet' (D. S.)Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: No doubt a substatum word. Beside ἀνθρηδών, ἀνθρήνη we find τενθρηδών f. (Arist.), τενθρήνη (Nik.); τενθρήνιον (Arist.). There are several forms which lack the first nasal: τεθρηνιώδης (Hp.), ἀθρήνη (Suidas etc.) and without red. or ἀ-, θρήνη, (Eust.), θρηνώδης (Democr. ap. Ael.); Winter Proth. Vok. 45. Cf. further θρῶναξ κηφήν. Λάκωνες H. (I know of no other cases with η\/ω). Note also πεμφρηδών f. `a wasp' (Nic.). So we have a root θρη\/ ων- with prothetic vowel or reduplication (cf. κεκρύφαλος, Σίσυφος) and prenasalization; Kuiper FS Kretschmer 221f. For ν\/δ cf. perhaps φληναφάω - φληδῶντα. Πεμφρηδών may show that the word had a labio-velar (Beekes Glotta 73, 1995\/6, 12f.). - There is no ground to assume that τενθρήνη, τενθρηδών are dissimilated from *τερθρ-. Relation with ἀθήρ, ἀνθέριξ is therefore improbable. Not to θρέομαι, θόρυβος. - τεθρηδών πρωρεύς H. rather a joking formation of the sailors' language after the animal names in - ηδών (Chantr. Form. 360f.). A difficult problem is the relation to Germanic and Balto-Slavic words: OS dren, drāno (Germ. Drohne), Lith. trãnas; s. Kuiper l.c. 222.Page in Frisk: 1,110Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀνθρηδών

18 θρᾶνος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `bench, supporting beams' (Att. a. hell. inschr., Ar.).Dialectal forms: Myc. ta-ra-nu.Derivatives: Diminutive θρανίον `id.' (Ar.) with θρανίδιον (Ar.); θρανίτης `rower of the upper of the three rows' (Th., Ar.; s. Morrison Class. Quart. 41, 128ff.), f. θρανῖτις ( κώπη; Attica), with θρανιτικός (Callix.); θρανίας m. (Marcell. Sid.), θρᾶνις or - ίς (Xenokr.) = ξιφίας, `swordfish', after the form of the upper jaw, cf. Thompson Fishes s. v. Denominative verb θρανεύω `to stretch to the tanner's board' (Ar. Eq. 369; θρανεύεται συντρίβεται H.) with ἀθράνευτον ἄστρωτον H. (= E. Fr. 569); to συν-θρανόω, θρανύσσω s. v. - Beside it θρῆνυς, - υος m. `footstool' (Hom.; cf. Hermann Gött. Nachr. 1943, 8; Chantraine Formation 118; improbable Benveniste Origines 56), with secondary κ-enlargement (Chantraine 383, Schwyzer 496 n. 6) θρῆνυξ, - υκος (Euph.), θρᾶνυξ (Corinn.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: If νο- or. νυ- is a suffix, we can connect the aor. inf. θρή-σασθαι (only Philet. 14 [IV-IIIa]: θρήσασθαι πλατάνῳ γ\<ρ\> αίῃ ὕπο), usually rendered with `sit down'. But the original meaning must rather have been `support oneself (on)' v.t., if the word is cognate with θρόνος; θρᾶνος, θρῆνυς then "the support, the bearer". This analysis however is quite doubtful. The word is no doubt a Pre-Greek word.Page in Frisk: 1,678-679Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > θρᾶνος
