1888-1951De origen ruso, emigro a los Estados Unidos siendo todavia un nino. Director de fotografia entre 1914 y 1920, ya en 1915 comienza una carrera como realizador que solo se interrumpira en 1949, despues de casi 35 anos y unas 140 peliculas, casi todas ellas de genero, entre las que se pueden citar las que tienen como personaje protagonista al detective Charlie Chan. Como director de westerns muestra cierto primitivismo en la puesta en escena, sin duda porque la mayor parte de los que realizo corresponden a la epoca temprana del sonoro, que no fue capaz de trascender. 51 Sturges, John
1911-1992Nacido en Oak Pak, Illinois, pasa su juventud en la sala de montaje de RKO. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial colabora en la realizacion de documentales de propaganda y es al terminar esta cuando, contratado por Columbia, tiene la oportunidad de dirigir su primer largometraje en 1946, The Man Who Dared. En 1949 pasa a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, donde sus posibilidades de abordar proyectos mas ambiciosos aumentan. Es precisamente en los anos 50 cuando Sturges alcanza un importante prestigio como director de westerns y filmes de accion. John Sturges se muestra siempre como un realizador enormemente eficaz. Lo habia sido en sus comienzos, cuando bregaba con la dificil y formativa serie B, y lo fue mas tarde, cuando se le encomendaron proyectos mas ambiciosos y costosos. Ejemplo tipico de cineasta de genero, cuenta en su haber con un buen punado de magnificas peliculas entre las que se encuentran algunos westerns. Debo confesar una especial predileccion por La gran evasion (The Great Escape, 1963), con un reparto casi exclusivamente masculino que le otorgo, en lo sucesivo, la fama de director de hombres, y, ya dentro del western, por Fort Bravo y Duelo de titanes. En esta ultima pelicula revisa de nuevo la historia, cercana al mito, de Wyatt Earp y el celebre duelo en O.K. Corral que, entre otros, habia tratado John Ford en Pasion de los fuertes (My Darling Clementine, 1946). Sturges aborda el asunto en dos ocasiones, en la citada Duelo de titanes y, posteriormente, en La hora de las pistolas, una vi sion un tanto crepuscular del tema. Pero este filme corresponde ya a la ultima etapa creativa de Sturges, que podemos iniciar inmediatamente despues de La gran evasion, en la que recibio no pocas criticas ne gativas debido a cierto amaneramiento en la puesta en escena, que contrastaba con el vigor nada vacilante que caracterizo sus anos de plenitud.The Walking Hills. 1949. 78 minutos. 1899-1983Nadie imagina a George Cukor, gran director de actores (especialmente de actrices), destacado por el refinamiento de sus puestas en escena, con ha bilidad para la comedia sentimental y el melodrama y, en fin, uno de los grandes nombres de Ho llywood, dirigiendo un western, un genero que no parece muy propicio a su forma de entender el cine. Sin embargo, lo hizo; un western muy especial, en el que no aban dona el tono de comedia que le es mas querido. 1886-1982Henry King, hermano mayor de Louis King, es un personaje mitico en el mundo del Hollywood clasico. Nacido en Christianburg, Virginia, fue actor de teatro antes de entrar en el cine. Director de mas de cien peliculas entre mudas y sonoras, actor desde mitad de la segunda decada del siglo XX, fue capaz de dirigir dramas, historias de amor, comedias, peliculas de aventuras y, desde luego, un selecto punado de westerns. De sus casi 120 filmes, mas de la mitad son mudos y entre ellos hay que destacar un interesante western, Flor del desierto (The Win ning of Barbara Worth, 1926), con Ronald Colman. No demasiado creativo tal vez, destaca por la firmeza de sus puestas en escena, a las que dotaba de todas las virtudes, y de no pocos de los defectos inherentes a los guiones que manejaba. A partir de la realizacion de Jesse James su filmografia mejora notablemente, incluyendo algunos filmes de aventuras y peliculas de notable intensidad dramatica, co mo El cisne negro (The Black Swan, 1942), Captain from Castile (1947), La colina del adios (Love Is a Many Splen dored Thing, 1955) y la que seria su ultima realizacion, Suave es la noche (Tender Is the Night, 1962), basada en la novela de Scott Fitzge rald. Sus cuatro westerns son de autentica antologia y, paradojicamente, muy distintos unos de otros. Destaca el uso que hace, en los dos ultimos, del actor Gregory Peck. 56 Lord, Del
1894-1970Canadiense, fue de los famosos Keystone Cops de Mack Sennett. Esta vinculado al cine desde la segunda decada del siglo XX, y cuenta en su haber con un importante numero de peliculas como director, aunque una parte importante de los dos centenares que consiguio realizar son cortometrajes. Se dice que llego a rodar sus peliculas a la inversa, es decir, empezando por la escena final, siguiendo por la anterior y asi sucesivamente, lo que no debio contribuir, sin duda, a una mejor comprension de las caracteristicas de la trama por parte de los actores. Parece ser que cuando Sennett cerro su estudio en 1933, fue vendedor de coches durante una temporada, hasta que Columbia lo contrato para rodar cortometrajes y, mas tarde, peliculas de serie B.Singin’ in the Corn. 1946. 65 minutos. 57 Neill, Roy William
1887-1946Director de genero, especializado en productos de serie B, fue muy respetado en el ambiente de la profesion. Roland de Gostrie, ese era su verdadero nombre, era hijo de un capitan de barco irlandes y fue precisamente en el barco de su padre donde nacio. Inicialmente actor teatral, en 1915 ya en los Estados Unidos se convierte en ayudante de Thomas Ince. Desde 1916 dirige unos cuarenta filmes mudos. A la llegada del sonoro, realiza una pelicula para Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, antes de firmar un contrato con Columbia, donde permanecera hasta mediados de los 30. Despues de una breve etapa en Inglaterra, realiza para la Universal un conjunto de doce peliculas que ponen en escena al celebre detective Sherlock Holmes, interpretado por Basil Rathbone, con Nigel Bruce como su inseparable doctor Watson. En esta serie brillo especialmente, lo mismo que en sus contribuciones a los generos de terror y fantastico. 58 Tourneur, Jacques
1904-1977Nacido en Paris, hijo del prestigioso director de origen frances Maurice Tourneur, coincide con el en los Estados Unidos en los anos 10, los de mayor esplendor de Maurice. Entre 1931 y 1934 dirige cuatro peliculas en Francia, y despues una serie de cortos en Norteamerica para Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. En 1939, para la misma productora, empieza a dirigir sus largometrajes “americanos”, pero si Jacques Tourneur pasa a la historia del cine como realizador, que lo hara con pleno merecimiento, ello se habra de deber, entre otras, a dos circunstancias: la serie de filmes RKO, de sutil terror psicologico, rodados para el productor Val Lewton, de la que La mujer pantera (Cat People, 1942) es su primera y acaso mas noble expresion, y por un punado de westerns sencillos, transparentes, dignos de admiracion autentica.En ningun caso hay que olvidar, no obstante, modelicos filmes de genero como Retorno al pasado (Out of the Past, 1947), magnifica pelicula negra, o La mujer pirata (Anne of the Indies, 1951), deslumbrante muestra del cine de piratas. El “arte de lo invisible” del que hace gala Tourneur en su famosisima escena de la piscina en La mujer pantera lo traslada a la casi totalidad de su filmografia. En particular, Wichita, que muestra las andanzas de un Wyatt Earp que aun no habia protagonizado el celebre duelo en O.K.
