1906-1986Vienes de nacimiento, hijo de una familia de clase alta, estudia Leyes pero se interesa por el teatro. Ayudante del celebre Max Reinhardt, pasa a su vez a la direccion teatral hasta que, consolidado como director teatral en los escenarios europeos, en 1935 es contratado para dirigir una obra en Nueva York. Reedita sus exitos en Broadway, antes de ser tentado por Hollywood. Aunque habia dirigido una pelicula en Alemania en 1932, es en los Estados Unidos donde se consagra como realizador de peliculas de tanto exito como Laura (1944). Sus inicios en la Meca del cine, sin embargo, no fueron faciles, dirigiendo para Fox un par de peliculas de serie B sin demasiada trascendencia que le hicieron volver a su trabajo teatral en Nueva York, donde, por razones azarosas, fue actor, tarea que esporadicamente tambien llevaria a cabo en el cine.
