1896-1977La aparente ligereza de las peliculas de Howard Hawks es enganosa. Detras de unos filmes que, a primera vista, solo pretenden entretener al espectador, hay mucho mas; mas de lo que pueden ofrecer no pocos directores intelectualmente comprometidos. Por eso, hay que afirmar rotundamente que Howard Hawks es uno de los realizadores mas grandes del cine americano y del cine en general, a la altura de los diez o doce mas ilustres de todos los tiempos. La cosa empezo en el verano de 1916, cuando un joven estudiante de ingenieria, buen de portista, aficionado a los automoviles, decidio aprovechar las vacaciones de verano trabajando en Fa mous Players-Lasky, la futura Paramount, como ascensorista. Un ano despues, ya graduado, vuelve, ahora para colaborar en la produccion como decorador, montador, director de casting, ayudante de direccion y todo lo que fuera necesario hasta que, despues de algun nuevo parentesis, se consolida como guionista, lo que facilita su paso a la direccion, que tuvo lugar en 1926 con la produccion Fox The Road to Glory. De las ocho peliculas mudas que realizo, la mas “hawksiana” es, sin duda, Una novia en cada puerto (A Girl in Every Port, 1928), pero el director es, sin discusion, un hombre del sonoro, acaso por la esplendida utilizacion de los dialogos que lo caracterizo, y que se pone de manifiesto de forma extrema en La fiera de mi nina (Bringing Up Baby, 1938), una de las cumbres de la comedia. Todo aquello que toco Hawks, lo dignifico: la comedia, como se ha puesto de manifiesto, pero tambien el cine negro, con El sueno eterno (The Big Sleep, 1946), el filme de aventuras, con Hatari! (1962) y, desde luego, el western, genero en el que cada una de sus incursiones originaba una obra maestra. Rio Bravo es, sin ningun genero de dudas, una de las dos o tres mejores peliculas de un genero tan inagotable como la vida. Al parecer, el origen de la pelicula hay que encontrarlo en la irritacion que le producia a Hawks Solo ante el peligro (High Noon, Fred Zinnemann, 1952), cuyo metraje discurre en la tarea de encontrar ayuda para que el sheriff del lugar pueda enfrentarse a unos pistoleros que se encuentran camino de la ciudad. La idea motriz de Hawks, permanente a lo largo de toda su filmografia, de mostrar a personas (preferentemente hombres porque las mujeres son, sobre todo, causa de conflictos) que estan realizando su trabajo y lo realizan lo mejor que saben, es la historia de todos y cada uno de sus westerns, particularmente de su falsa coleccion de “rios”, formada por dos peliculas en lugar de cuatro, porque Rio Rojo es, en realidad, Red River, y en Rio de sangre ni siquiera aparece la palabra en el titulo original. Solo Rio Bravo y Rio Lobo, peliculas fronterizas donde las haya, responden a la idea que acuno el termino unificador para las cuatro peliculas. 1916-1992Nacido el 14 de octubre de 1916 en New Haven, Connecticut, de padres rusos. La prosperidad familiar estuvo ligada al traslado a Nueva York, donde Arnold sintio despertar su vocacion teatral. Despues del derrumbe economico norteamericano de 1929 la familia quedo casi en la ruina, por lo que el joven Jack se determino, mas si cabe, a hacer carrera en el teatro. Su primera experiencia cinematografica fue curiosa: con una camara Kodak, modelo K, de 16 mm, filmo las obras de teatro en que no participaba, vendiendo copias a los actores. Durante la guerra, hizo un curso de cine en 1942, con objeto de presentarse en los Estudios Astoria de la Paramount pa ra optar al puesto de operador. Fue asignado a Ro bert Flaherty como asistente, con el que permanecio ocho meses. Despues de la guerra volvio a su trabajo teatral y, entre 1947 y 1949, rodo algunos cortos promocionales, antes de debutar en la realizacion de largometrajes con el filme de tono do cumental Whit These Hands (1950), sobre el mundo de la confeccion. El exito de la pelicula le abrio las puertas de la Universal, para la que rodaria, en primer lugar, la irrelevante Girls in the Night (1953). Entre 1953 y 1955 realizara otras cuatro peliculas, en el efimero sistema 3-D, que le permitiran ir afinando un estilo cinematografico propio, especialmente adecuado para producciones no demasiado costosas. Estuvo en la Uni versal hasta 1958, y despues, sin abandonarla del todo, dirigio peliculas para MGM, Paramount y otros estudios, hasta que, en 1976, despues del filme de accion Conspiracion en Suiza (The Swiss Cons piracy), se refugio en el medio televisivo. Estamos, sin lugar a dudas, ante uno de los grandes directores de la serie B, aunque serie B “de lujo”, con peliculas en su haber tan formidables como La mujer y el monstruo (Creature from the Black Lagoon, 1954), o The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), no estrenada oficialmente en Espana pero conocida como El increible hombre menguante. 60 Curtiz, Michael
1886-1962Michael Curtiz siempre sera el director de Casablanca, pero es mucho mas que eso. Es un director que asociamos a Warner Bros, que se atrevio con todo y que raramente defraudo, ni en peliculas musicales ni en filmes de aventuras ni en melodramas romanticos ni en largometrajes de accion. Tampoco, desde luego, en sus westerns, un punado de selectas realizaciones por las que parece no pasar el tiempo. Este hungaro perspicaz y concienzudo fue, con toda seguridad, el director, junto a Raoul Walsh, que mejor partido supo sacar del discutible actor Errol Flynn. Con el como protagonista, realiza su famosa trilogia, impropiamente llamada “de las ciudades”, compuesta por Dodge, ciudad sin ley, Oro, amor y sangre y Camino de Santa Fe, pero tal vez el mejor de sus westerns es el itinerante Los comancheros, que sera tambien su ultima pelicula, realizada poco antes de morir. Nacido en Budapest como Kertesz Mihaly, trabajo en su pais, alternando tareas directoriales con las de actor, entre 1912 y 1918. A partir de esa fecha, que coincide con el final de la industria cinematografica hungara, dirige en Austria y otros paises de Europa occidental hasta que Jack Warner, impresionado por alguna de las peliculas que habia visto de Curtiz, lo lleva a los Estados Unidos donde, pasado el tiempo, se convertiria en el director mas emblematico de Warner Bros, para quien realizo pelicula tras pelicula sin descanso hasta llegar al centenar. Lo sorprendente es que rara vez el producto que salia de sus manos era una mediocridad y con frecuencia resultaba notable, independientemente del genero o la clave narrativa que utilizara.Under a Texas Moon (Tantas veo...). 1930. 82 minutos.
