77 λισσάνιος
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: only in ὦ λισσάνιε (Ar. Lys. 1171; v. l. λυσσ-), address of unknown meaning, by H. and Phot. explained with ἀγαθός (cf. ὦ ' γαθέ).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Because of the unclear meaning without etymology. After Bechtel Dial. 2, 376 f. hypostasis from λισσὸς ἀνιᾶν, "who causes no ἀνία" = `harmless', but the 2. member belongs rather to ἡνία `rein'. The 2. member too is uncertain; when we omit the v. l. λυσσάνιε of Cod. Ravennas (rather `Verschlimmbesserung' after λύσσα; cf. μαινόμενε sch.), connection is possible not only with λισσός ("with smooth reins", i.e. ` steerable'??), but also with λίσσομαι ("who asks for reins" = "who wants to be guided" = `obedient'?); cf. πειθ-, φιλ-ήνιος. The analysis as a compound does not convince.Page in Frisk: 2,129-130Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λισσάνιος

"holding off the wolves " ( εἴργω), Λυκοσ-ούρα town in Arcadia, after the contraction Κυνοσ-ούρα (Risch IF 59, 266 w. n. 1); λυκ-αψός ( λύκ-) m., also - ψίς f., name of a venomous plant, `Echium italicum' (Nic., Dsc., Gal.), prop. "attacking wolves" (cf. Strömberg Wortstudien 100f. on χορδαψός), because of its poison as λυκο-κτόνον a. o. (Strömberg Pflanzennamen 66 u. 70 f.); but see s.v.Derivatives: Feminines: λύκαινα `she-wolf' (Arist.; after λέαινα etc.) with - αίνιον (Poll.; of a woman); λυκώ name of the moon (PMag. Par.); diminut.: λυκιδεύς m. `younger wolf' (Sol. ap. Plu., Theoc.; Boßhardt 65), λυκίσκος ἡ μη ἔχουσα ἀξονίσκον τροχαλία, τρῆμα δε μόνον H.; also PN (Schwyzer 542). Further: λυκέη, -ῆ `wolfsskin' (K 459 a.o.), λύκειος δορά `id.' (E. Rh. 208), substantiv. λυκεία f. (Plb. 6, 22, 3); λυκώδης `wolf-like' (Arist.), λυκηδόν `as a wolf' (A.), λυκηθμός `howling of wolves' (Anon. ap. Suid.; after μυκηθμός); λυκόομαι `be lacerated by wolves' (X.). On λύσσα s. v.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [1178] *u̯l̥kʷos `wolf'Etymology: With λύκος agrees formally exactly the Northgerm. name of the lynx, Swed. lō (PGm. * luha- from IE * luko-; s. 2. λύγξ). But of course one prefers to connect the widespread name of the wolf, which is preserved e. g. in Skt. vŕ̥ka-, Lith. vil̃kas, OCS vlьkъ, Goth. wulfs, Alb. ulk. With the resulting IE *u̯l̥kʷos can λύκος be combined if we assume, that the labiovelar coloured the preceding sonant with loss of the labialisation, cf. Schwyzer 298 and 352; s. also on κύκλος. A comparable problem gives Lat. lupus. Far remains however Arm. gayl (rather to Ir. gāel `wolf' with Fick 2, 259 a. o.). With the name of the wolf taboo-ideas may have played a part (Havers Sprachtabu 37ff.) which may have caused phonetic irregularities. Also for IE *u̯l̥kʷos such an origin is possible; the interpretation as `lacerater' (to u̯el(k)- `lacerate' not counting the labiovelar; s. Specht KZ 66, 26f.) remains hypothetic. - Details in WP. 1, 316f., Pok. 1178f., W.-Hofmann s. lupus, Vasmer s. volk; also Benveniste BSL 44, 53.Page in Frisk: 2,143-144Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λύκος

79 λύχνος
Grammatical information: m.,Meaning: `(portable) light, lamp' (τ 34), also as fishname (Str., H., as lat. lucerna ; after its lighting organs, evt after the exterior form, Strömberg Fischnamen 55f.).Other forms: pl. also τὰ λύχνα, to which sg. λύχνον (cf. Schwyzer-Debrunner 37, Sommer Nominalkomp. 88)Compounds: Several compp., e.g. λυχνοῦχος m. `lamp-stander, lighter' (com.), also as 2. member as in θερμό-λυχνον = λυχν-έλαιον `lamp-oil' (Att. inscr.).Derivatives: 1. Diminut.: λυχνάριον (pap.), λυχνίσκος fishname (Luc.; cf. above). 2. name of a lighter: λυχνεῖον (com., Arist., hell. inscr.) with λυχνείδιον (-ί̄διον), λυχνίον, - ιον (Antiph., Theoc., Luc.), also `lamp' (pap.), λυχνία, - έα, - εία (hell.; Scheller Oxytonierung 44 f.). 3. name of the ruby that emits light: λυχνίας λίθος (Pl. Com.), λυχνίτης (Str.), also name of Parian marble, as lamps were made of it (Varro ap. Plin.; s. Redard 56 a. 244 n. 13), λυχνεύς (Callix., H.), also `lighter' (Ath.; Boßhardt 63), λύχνις m. (D. P., Orph. L.), λυχνίς f. (Luc..; cf. 4). 4. plantname: λυχνίς f. `rose campion, Lychnis coronaria' (Thphr., Dsc.; because of the purpur-red colour, Strömberg Pflanzennamen 49), λυχνῖτις f. `candlewick, Verbascum' (Plin., pap., Dsc.), because the leaves were used as wick (Strömberg 106, Redard 73; cf. s. θρύον). 5. Other substant.: λυχνεών, - ῶνος m. `place to keep lamps' (Luc. VH 1, 29), λύχνωμα `lint' (sch. Ar. Ach. 1175, = λαμπάδιον), with nominal basis (Chantraine Formation 187). 6. Adjectives: λυχν-αῖος (Procl.), also - ιαῖος (S. E., Gal.) `belonging to a lamp', - ώδης `lamp-like' (Heph. Astr.). 7. Verb: λυχνεύω `lighten someb.' (Areth. in Apok.).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [688f] *leuk-sn-ā `moon, stars' etc.Etymology: Beside λύχνος from *λύκ-σν-ος we have with full grade Av. raox-šn-a- `light, gleaming', OPr. lauxnos pl. `stars', Lat. lūna = Praen. Losna, OCS luna `moon', MIr. luan `light, moon', IE * louk-sn- or * leuk-sn-; the deviating zero grade in λύχνος may be related with the diminished strength of the ου- diphthong in Greek (cf. Schwyzer 347). The words mentioned are all transformations of an old noun with suffixal - sn- from the verb for `lighten, gleam', which is in Greek represented by λεύσσω; s. v. for further relatives (Hitt. luk-zi etc.). As intermediate form served prob. an s-stem (Av. raočah n. `light' from IE * leukos-, Lat. lūmen from * leuks-men- etc.). Quite uncertain is λουνόν λαμπρόν H.; hypotheses by v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 34 and Specht Ursprung 187. On the sn-suffix cf. esp. the synonymous Skt. jyót-sn-ā f. `moonlight'. - A zero grade noun *λυκ- (= Skt. rúc- f. `light') appears in the hypostasis ἀμφι-λύκ-η adjunct of the night H 433 `morning tilight', also as subst. `(morning)twilight' (A. R., Opp.; Bechtel Lex. s. v., also Leumann Hom. Wörter 53); after it also in λυκ-αυγής `lighting in the morning' (Luc.), λυκ-ό-φως, - ωτος n. `twilight' (Ael., H. s. λυκοειδέος, sch.); s. also λυκάβας, also λύσσα. - Schwyzer 489 (on the formation), WP. 2, 408ff., Pok. 687ff., W.-Hofmann s. lūna, Vasmer s. luná I; everywhere more forms a. lit.Page in Frisk: 2,147-149Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λύχνος

80 μαίνομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `rage, be furious, of the senses, be excited' (Il.); rarely act. ἐκ-μαίνω `make furious' (E., Ar.; μαίνω Orph.), aor. μῆναι (S., E.) with intr. midd. μήνασθαι (Z 160, Theoc.)Derivatives: 1. From the present: μαινάς, - άδος f. `the raging, Bacchantess, Mänade' (Il.; Schwyzer 508, Sommer Münch. Stud. 4, 4); μαινόλης, Aeol. Dor. - λας, f. - λις `raging, excited' (Sapph., A.; Schwyzer 408 and Mus. Helv. 3, 49ff., Chantraine Form. 237). 2. From the root: μανία, - ίη `fury, madness' (IA.) cf. Scheller Oxytonierung 39); μανικός, μανιώδης `furious, raging' (IA.), f. also μανιάς `id.' (after λύσσα: - άς, Schwyzer 508). Verbaladj. like ἐμ-μανής `raging' (IA), prob. hypostasis (to μανία) after ἐμ-φανής a.o. ( ἐμ-μαίνομαι first Act. Ap., J.).Etymology: On μάντις etc. s. v. With the zero-grade yot-present μαίνομαι from *μαν-ι̯ο-μαι agree formally several forms from diff. languages: Skt. mányate = Av. mainyeite `think', Celt., OIr. do-moiniur `believe, have the opinion', Slav., e.g. OCS mьnjǫ `think, consider as', Lith. miniù `think, remember' (innovation for older menù?; s. Fraenkel Wb.), IE *mn̥-i̯o \/ e-. With μανῆ-ναι agree formally also the Balto-Slav. inf. Lith. minė́-ti, OCS mьně-ti as well as Goth. 3. sg. munai-Þ ' μέλλει, thinks (to do)'; genetic connection however is doubtful, as Goth. munaiÞ may as well agree with Skt. manāy-ati `be eager' and for posthom. μανῆναι (as if from μανέεται) also analogical origin ( φαίνομαι: φανῆναι; J. Schmidt KZ 37, 44) is possible; on Lith. minė́ti etc. s. also Fraenkel l.c. and Lexis 2, 196. Also μήνασθαι (analogical or from *μαν-σ-, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 412) and μέμηνα (after τακῆναι: τέτηκα a. o.) are Greek formations. With the formal reorganisation goes the semantic emancipation; the connection with the widespread group μένος, μέμονα, μιμνήσκω (s. vv.) can still be seen e.g. in Z 100 f.: ἀλλ' ὅδε λίην | μαίνεται οὑδέ τίς οἱ δύναται μένος ἰσοφαρίζειν (cf. Porzig Satzinhalte 34). - [Not with J. Schmidt l.c. and Specht KZ 62, 79 (cf. also Schwyzer 694 n. 3) to μαιμάω.]Page in Frisk: 2,160-161Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μαίνομαι
