Skt. yācchrē[snull ][tnull ]á[hudot ] 'the best possible': (2) ὧς ' thus' is the Adv. of a Demonstr. stem so- found in Skt. sa, Gr. ὁ, Lat. sō-c (Gloss. = ita, cf. Umbr. esoc); (3) ὡς postpositive (ὄρνιθες ὥς, etc.) constantly makes a preceding short closed syll. long in Hom., and must therefore have been ϝως; it may perh. be related to Skt. vā, a form of va, iva ( = (1) or (2) like), Lat. ve, Gr. ἦ[ϝ] ε; (4) ὡς prep. 'to' is of doubtful origin (perh. fr. Ως, cogn. with Lat. ōs 'face', Skt. ās: Ως τινα ἐλθεῖν like τί δέ δε φρένας ἵκετο πένθος;); (5) ὡς F.3 is prob. ϝως, Adv. of ϝός the reflexive Adj., and means lit. in his (their) own way (or place); it is idiomatically placed before ἕκαστος ([etym.] ἑκάτερος), cf.ϝὸν ϝεκάτερος Leg.Gort.1.18

Zumbach Neuerungen 5], Pi., IA.); on the botanical meaning Strömberg Theophrastea 100f.Compounds: Several compp., esp. in the botan. terminology (Strömberg Theophrastea 112), z. B. μονο-κάλαμος `with single stalk' (Thphr.), καλαμη-φόρος `with reed' (X. HG 2, 1, 2; v. l. -o-; cf. Schwyzer 526), καλαμη-τόμος `cutting off stalks' (A. R.).Derivatives: καλάμη f. `stalk or straw' (Hom., Hdt., X., Arist.).- Diminut. καλαμίσκος (Ar., medic.), καλάμιον (pap.); καλαμίς f. name of several objects made of reed (hell.; cf. Chantraine Formation 342f.); καλαμία (- εία) `reed' (pap.; collective); καλαμών `id.' (lit. pap.); καλαμάριον `reed-case' (pap.). - καλαμεύς `fisher' (Pankrat. ap. Ath.; cf. Boßhardt Die Nom. auf - ευς 75); also καλαμευτής `id.' (AP; as if from *καλαμεύω, cf. Chantraine 318); καλαμίτης `with κάλαμος etc.' (D.; s. (pap.). - καλαμόω `provide with reed, bind (a bone) with reed' (Gal.) with καλαμωτή `fence of r.' (Eust.,H.); καλαμίζω `blow a reed-flute' (Ath.). - From καλάμη: καλαμαία f. kind of grasshopper (Theoc. 10, 18), καλαμαῖον n. kind of cicade (Paus. Gr., H.) cf. Gil Emerita 25, 315f.; cf. Georgacas Glotta 31, 216), καλαμάομαι `collect grain-stalks, gather ears (of corn) ' (Kratin., LXX, Plu.) with καλάμημα (Thd.).Etymology: Old word for `reed, straw' wit forms in Latin ( culmus), in Germanic, e. g. OHG halm, in Baltic and Slavic, e. g. OPr. salme `straw', Latv. salms, Russ. solóma, Serb. slȁma. All forms except κάλαμος, - μη can go back to IE. *ḱolh₂mo-, ḱolh₂mā-; therefore κάλαμος has been explained from *κόλαμος (cf. ποταμός, πλόκ-αμος), through assimilation; but note on - μος, - μη Porzig Satzinhalte 283f. But the form may have been * klh₂-em-. - From κάλαμος Lat. calamus (s. Ernout-Meillet) like Skt. kaláma- `writing reed', and Arab. qalam \> Osman. kalém \> NGr. καλέμι (Maidhof Glotta 10, 11). - More forms in W.-Hofmann s. culmus, calamus, Vasmer Russ. et. 126 ποιέω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to do, to make, to produce, to poetize, to act', in midd. also `to choose, to deem, to appraise' (Il.).Other forms: Aor. ποιῆσαι, fut. ποιήσω, perf. midd. πεποίημαι (all Il.), act. πεποίηκα, aor. pass. ποιηθῆναι (IA.), fut. ποιηθήσομαι (D.), πεποιήσομαι (Hp.).Compounds: Often w. prefix in diff. senses, e.g. ἀντι-, ἐκ-, ἐν-, περι-, προσ-. As 2. member - ποιός in unlimited productive syntheta, e.g. λογοποιός m. `historian, fabulist, newsmonger' (IA.) with λογοποι-έω, - ία, - ικός, - ημα.Derivatives: 1. ποίημα ( προσ-, περι-) n. `production, work, poem' (IA.) with - ημάτιον (Plu.), - ηματικός `poetic' (Plu.); 2. ποίησις ( προσ-, περι-, ἐκ- a.o.) f. `creation, production, poetry' (IA.); on the meaning of ποί-ημα, - ησις Ardizzoni Riv. fil. class. 90, 225 ff.. Chantraine Form. 287. 3. ποιητός ( προσ-, ἐκ- etc.) `made, produced' (Il.), also `made artificially, not naturally' = `adopted' (Pl., Arist.); Ammann Μνήμης χάριν 1, 19 f. 4. ποιητής m. (IA.), f. - ήτρια (hell.), `creator, producer, poet', esp. of Homer, with - ητικός `creating, poetic', ἡ -ητική ( τέχνη) `the art of poetry' (Pl., Arist.), - ητικεύομαι `to speak poetically etc.' (Eust., sch.). 5. ποιησείω desid. `to wish to do' (Hdn.).Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably]Etymology: Decisive for the morphological evaluation of ποιέω are some dialectic aorist-forms: Arg. ποιϜέ̄σανς, ἐποίϜε̄hε, ἐποιϜέ̄θε̄, Boeot. ἐποίϜε̄σε, to which pres. opt. El. [πο]ιϜέοι (beside repeated ποιέοι). Acc. to usual interpretation (lit. in Bq and WP. 1, 510) ποιϜέω is derived from a noun *ποιϜός, which would be found in ἀρτο-ποιός a.o. An independent noun *ποιϜός cannot however be deduced from the 2. member, as the relevant adjectives seems recent and may have been derived from the verbal expressions ( τοξοφόρ-ος: τόξον φέρειν, λογογράφ-ος: λόγον γράφειν etc.). One might think that in the simplex we have a compound of - ποιέω that was made independent (Schwyzer 726 n. 7). -- The general meaning `make, create' may have arisen from the most different concrete special meanings. Nothing forbids to connect a verbal noun *ποι-Ϝός with u̯o-suffix (Schwyzer 472) with a verb `heap, accumulate, fit together', which is preserved in Indo-Iran., e.g. Skt. cinóti, and also has representatives in Slav., e.g. OCS činъ ' τάξις' with činiti `order, form'; IE kʷei- (WP. 1, 509f., Pok. 637f.). It is however obvious to combine, the u̯-element in *ποιϜός with the u̯-element in cinóti: so ποιϜέω from *kʷoi̯-u̯-éi̯ō beside cinóti from *kʷi-n-éu̯-ti approx. as Goth. straujan 'strew' from *strou̯-éi̯ō beside Skt. str̥ṇóti `strew' from *str̥-n-éu̯-ti (s. στόρνυμι) or Goth. - walwjan `revolve' beside Skt. vr̥ṇóti `envelop' and εἰλύω `id.' (*u̯ol-u-éi̯ō: *u̯l-n-éu̯-ti). In such an analysis ποιέω would appear like Goth. straujan, walwjan as an iterative deverbative and one would be liberated from the not quite reliable noun *ποιϜός. Of course the syntheta in - ποιός can then be connected with a primares verb (δρῠ-τόμ-ος: δόρυ τάμνειν). -- On the meaning of ποιέω and other verba faciendi cf. Braun Stud. itfllcl. N. S. 15, 243 ff.; also Valesio Quaderni dell'Istituto di Glottologia (Bologna) 5 (1960) 97 ff. Cf. also the lit. on δράω and πράσσω. Buxen- tum (Krahe Beitr. zur Namenforsch. 2, 233 w. lit.); also 10. Πυξίτης m. river near Trapezus in Asia Minor (Arr. a.o.; Redard 175)?Origin: LW [a loanword which is (probably) not of Pre-Greek origin] ItalyEtymology: Foreign word of unknown origin. After Scardigli Sprache 6, 220 ff. (with extensive treatment w. lit.) Anatolian, and like Arm. boys `plant' from IE * bheu- `grow' (s. φύω). Diff., even more improbable, Carnoy Ant. class. 24, 22 and REGr. 69, 284 (to IE * bheugh- `bow'). Earlier attempts at explanation from IE in Bq. From πύξος, - ίς, - ινον Lat. buxus (hardly independent loan), pyxis, pyxinum (s.W.-Hofmann s. vv. w. further lit.); from there the modern Eur. forms (Fr. buis, NHG Büchse, Engl. box etc.). -- Furnée157 stresses that the tree is at home in Italy, not in Asia Minor or Greece (Schrader-Nehrin RL s.
