But in the main the distinction between the use of dat. and acc. is fixed even at the present time: the acc. seems to represent the more primitive usage of this verb, the dat. the secondary.C. "посланцы", от которых Иисус требовал идти в мир в поисках учеников) mission, missionary enterprise, the propagation of the Christian faith among non-Christian peopleкраткосрочная миссия (приезд миссионера на миссионерское поле на срок от месяца до двух лет - часто для того, чтобы понять, призывает ли его Бог стать миссионером) — short-term mission

58 academic
•• Academic 1. of a school, college, or university. 2. scholarly as opposed to technical or practical. 3. of theoretical interest only (Oxford American Dictionary).
•• Опытный переводчик с этим словом не мучается, равно как и с русскими словами академик и академический. Неопытный же может многое напутать. Поэтому объясним по порядку.
•• Academic означает чаще всего ученый (см. ученый в русской части словаря), причем обычно преподающий в университете (подавляющее большинство ученых в США и других странах работают в учебных заведениях). Обратим внимание на то, что в большинстве стран нет Академии Наук в том виде, как она существует у нас. The U.S. Academy of Sciences – не более чем общественная организация, и вокруг американской «де сиянс академии» нет никакого ореола. Таким образом, в предложении Six Japanese academics convened in Tokyo and warned reporters not to believe one word in my book (Newsweek) речь идет просто об ученых. Далее в тексте находим подтверждение того, что речь идет именно об университетских ученых:...the six academics, all affiliated with major Japanese universities.
•• В качестве прилагательного слово academic означает научный и является синонимом слова scholarly с тем отличием, что первое отражает больше формальную сторону, а второе – реальный научный уровень. Это различие хорошо видно в примере из мемуаров американского дипломата и ученого Джорджа Кеннана: The Institute took me, already a middle aged man devoid of academic credentials, substantially on faith, gambling on the existence of scholarly capacities that remained to be demonstrated. – Институт по сути дела поверил мне, уже немолодому человеку без научной репутации, в надежде на мой потенциал исследователя, который, однако, еще предстояло доказать. Нередко определение academic лучше переводить словом теоретический: That injected a new and highly politicized dimension into what so far had seemed an academic debate (International Herald Tribune). В этом значении слово academic часто имеет негативный оттенок (чисто теоретический, абстрактный, отвлеченный).
•• Русское слово академик переводится обычно Academician, хотя это слово мало что говорит большинству англичан или американцев, и я предпочитаю перевод member of the Academy of Sciences.
Giddens is often described by colleagues as “clever” or “ambitious”... – a backhanded compliment in the staid world of British academe. В применении к конкретному учебному заведению слово Academy означает среднее учебное заведение, ближе к нашему суворовскому училищу, а отнюдь не военный вуз, как у нас. Кроме того, academy иногда означает и совсем невоенизированное учебное заведение, ориентированное на интенсивную подготовку в колледж, часто для отстающих детей богатых родителей.
