WET, DAMP, MOISTПрилагательное wet имеет значение 'насквозь пропитанный влагой' и 'обильно покрытый влагой': wet clothes, wet linen, wet sponge, wet towel и wet hands (cheeks), wet pavements, grass wet with dew. Wet также означает 'невысохший, непросохший': wet paint, wet ink. Damp имеет значение 'влажный' и, в отличие от wet, подразумевает незначительную влажность: damp sheets 'влажные простыни' (после утюжки) в отличие от wet sheets 'мокрые простыни' (после стирки), damp sponge 'влажная (отжатая) губка' и wet sponge 'губка, мокрая насквозь'. Damp может переводиться на русский язык прилагательным 'сырой': damp weather, damp room (house). В ряде случаев damp имеет в виду влажность, вызывающую неприятные ощущения: damp shoes, damp clothes. Moist означает 'несухой, слегка влажный, увлажнившийся'. Так, moist hands (cheeks, eyes) соответствует русскому 'влажные руки (щеки, глаза)', в отличие от wet hands (cheeks, eyes) 'мокрые руки (щеки, глаза)'.
