1913-1993Nacido en Los Angeles, estuvo a sueldo de Warner Bros como montador durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En ese periodo trabaja en algunas peliculas importantes, particularmente Tener y no tener (To Have and Have Not, 1944), donde hace amistad con su director, Howard Hawks, a cuyo equipo tecnico se incorpora. En tal condicion, participa en otra pelicula de Hawks, Rio Rojo (Red River, 1949), origen del conflicto que surgio entre Hawks, Nyby y Howard Hughes. Este acuso a Hawks de plagio, al pretender que Red River debia mas de lo razonable a The Outlaw, la pelicula que habia frimado Hughes en 1943. Hawks y Nyby estaban trabajando entonces en La cosa (The Thing from Another World, 1951), que iba a ser el debut del segundo como director. De resultas del conflicto, Hawks se vio obligado a desaparecer de la pelicula, que fue remontada y estrenada, aunque, afortunadamente, mas tarde se recupero el montaje original.
