2 σκέπτομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to look around, to look back, to spy, to contemplate, to consider, to survey' (Il; Att. has fo it σκοπέω, - έομαι; s. below)Other forms: Aor. σκέψασθαι (Od.), fut. σκέψομαι, perf. ἔσκεμμαι (IA.), aor. pass. σκεφθῆναι (Hp.), σκεπ-ῆναι w. fut. - ήσομαι (LXX).Derivatives: A. With ε-vowel: 1. σκέψις ( ἐπί-, κατά- σκέπτομαι a.o.) `contemplation, deliberation, examination' (IA.). 2. σκέμ-μα (rarely w. δια- a. o.) `examination, problem' (Hp., Pl. a. o.). 3. σκεπτ-οσύνη f. = σκέψις (Timo, Cerc.). 4. - ήριον n. `test' (Man.). 5. - ικός ( ἐπι-, δια- σκέπτομαι) `cogitating, revising', οἱ σκέπτομαι name of a philos. sect (hell. a. late). B. With ο-ablaut: 1. σκοπός m. (f.) `spy, guard, scout; goal, purpose' (Il.) with hypostases: ἐπί-σκοπος, adv. -α `hitting the goal' (Hdt., trag., late), ἀπό-σκοπος `missing the goal' (Emp.); σκόπ-ιμος `purposive, appropriate' (late; Arbenz 97); as 2. member, e.g. οἰωνο-σκόπος m. `bird-watcher' with - έω, - ία, - ικός, - εῖον (E., hell. a. late). 2. To the prefixcompp.: ἐπί-, κατά-, πρό-σκοπος m. `spy, supervisor, foresighted etc.' (Hom., Pi., IA.). 3. σκοπή ( κατα-, ἐπι- a. o.) f., the spying, watch-tower' (Att. etc.) with σκοπάω (Ar. Fr. 854). 4. σκοπιά, Ion. - ιή f. `mountain-, castle-watching-place, mountain-summit, watch-tower' (ep. Ion. poet. Il., also hell. a. late prose; favoured by the metre, Scheller Oxytonierung 82 f.) with σκοπ-ιήτης m. `summit dweller' = Πάν (Paus.), - ιάζω ( ἀπο-) `to spy, to look out' (ep. Il.), - ιάομαι `to percieve' (Il.; only w. δια-). 5. σκοπέω, - έομαι iterat.-intensive to σκέπτομαι (Pi., IA.), non-pres. forms late: σκοπ-ῆσαι, - ήσασθαι, - ήσω, - ήσομαι, ἐσκόπημαι. 6. σκοπεύω ( κατα-, ἀπο-, ἐπι-), prob. second. for σκοπέω (Schwyzer 732; X., LXX, pap. etc.) with σκόπ-ευσις, - ευτής (Aq.), - εῖα n. pl. (Procl.). -- S. also σκόπελος and σκώψ.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [984] *speḱ- `see sharply, spy'Etymology: As old yot-present σκέπτομαι stands with metathesis (Schwyzer 268) for *σπέκ-ι̯ομαι, which is identical with Lat. speciō, Av. spasyeiti and (except for anl. s-) with Skt. páśyati `see'. The aor. σκέψασθαι too can in the same way be identified with Lat. spexī ; in both cases we have however to do with innovations against the suppletive Skt. ádarśam, 3. pl. ádr̥śan (s. δέρκομαι). Through the iterative-intensive σκοπέω, - έομαι a new opposition was created in Greek to σκέψασθαι etc. in the same way as Skt. pásyati: ádarśam, ὁράω: εἶδον. -- Semant. and phonetic identity is also found in σκοπός and Skt. spaśa- `spy', which is enlarged from spaś- (s. below; Wackernagel-Debrunner II: 2, 90); to this further OWNo. spār `predicting' from PGm. * spaha- (IE *spóḱo-). Thus σκοπή agrees, but for the accent, with OWNo. spā f. `prophesy' from PGm. * spahō (IE *spóḱā). Greek does not have the old root noun Skt. spaś-, Av. spas- `spy', Lat. haru-spex a. o., from which σκέπτομαι etc. prob. arose as denominative. -- Further details w. lit. in WP. 2, 659f., Pok. 984, W.-Hofmann and Ernout-Meillet s. speciō. 3 θέα
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `seeing, looking at, contemplation, aspect' (IA).Compounds: As 1. member in θεωρός `spectator, envoy at a feast', s. v.Derivatives: Θᾱΐς f. PN (D. S.). - θεάομαι, Ion. θηέομαι, Dor. θαέομαι (with θάμεθα [Sophr.] and other contracted forms; Bechtel Dial. 2, 191), also with prefix, e. g. ἐκ-, κατα-, συν-, `look at, behold' (Il.) with several verbal nouns: 1. θέαμα, θέημα `sight, spectacle' (Semon., A.); 2. θέασις `contemplation, insight' (Gal., Porph.); 3. θατύς (Dor. \< *θαατύς) ἴκριον (= `bank in theater'), θεωρεῖον, ἐς θατύν εἰς θεωρίαν H.; 4. θέατρον, θέητρον `place for spectators, theater' (IA) with several compp. and derivv., e. g. ἀμφι-θέατρος prop. bahuvrihi `with place for spectators around' ( ἱππόδρομος, στοά), subst. - ον `amphitheater' (D. H., Str.), θεατρικός, θεατρίζω, θεατρισμός; 5. θεατής, θεητής `spectator' (IA) with θεατικός (Arr.); 6. θηητήρ (φ 397), θατήρ (B. 9, 23) `id.'; 7. θεήμων `id.' ( APl.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: As basis of θέα etc. we can assume *θᾱϜα; (the -α of Att. θέα from θεάομαι? s. Schwyzer 188 w. n. 2). From *θά̄Ϝᾱ, *θήϜη, θέα (with shortening η \> ε; Schwyzer 349) we can explain θᾱ(Ϝ)έομαι, θη(Ϝ)έομαι (with αο \> εο; Schwyzer 242f.), θεάομαι without difficulty as denominatives. Or it is an iterative-intensive deverbative (Schwyzer 720) with θέη, θέα as back-formations; this seems indicated by the chronology. Another primary noun is prob. θῆβος (= θῆϜος) θαῦμα with θήγεια (= θήϜεια) θαυμαστά, ψευδῆ and θηταλά (= θηϜαλά) θαυμαστά, ψεύδεσιν ὅμοια H. - No cognates; wrong combinations in Bq, 832. Wrong Szemerényi Glotta 33, 256 (*θά̄Ϝα from IE *dhm̥su̯ā etc.). See on θαῦ-μα s.v.Page in Frisk: 1,656-657Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > θέα

4 σίνομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to rob, to pillage, to destroy, to damage' (ep. Od., Sapph., Ion., X., hell. a. late, also Argos, Crete, Herakleia; Hdt., Hp. also - έομαι; not in Att..Compounds: As 1. member in σιν-όδων, - όδους, - οντος m. name of a fish (Arist., Dorio a. o.), folketymol. for συν- σίνομαι (s. Strömberg 45). Unclear however σινάμωρος approx. `harmful, baneful, wicked, mischievous, sweet-toothed, lustful' with - ία, - έω, - ευμα (Ion., com., Arist. a. o.); because of the short ι not to the verb, but to the noun σίνος; the final fits badly with μωρός, perh. better to ἐγχεσί-μωρος, if taken as `spear-happy' (cf. Leumann Hom. Wörter 272 n. 18).Derivatives: 1. σίνος n. `damage, harm, disaster' (Ion., A., Arist. a. o.) with ἀ-σινής `unharmed, harmless' (λ 110, Sapph., Ion., A., Pl., X., hell. a. late), opposite ἐπι-σινής (Thphr. a. o.). 2. σίντης m. `destroyer, robber', mostly of beasts of prey, `thief' (Il., hell. a. late epic); σίντωρ m. `id.' (Crete IVa, AP; Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 123 a. 131); uncertain Σίντιες m. pl. name of the old population of Lemnos (Hom. a.o.), after Kretschmer Glotta 30, 117 prop. "the robbers" and to be distinguished from the Thracian Σιντοι. 3. Σίνις, - ιδος m. name of a mythical robber (B., E., X. a. o.), also appellat. `robber, destroyer' (A. Ag. 217 [gener. changed to ἶνις], Call., Lyc.). 4. σιναρός `damaged' (Hp., as ῥυπαρός a. o.). 5. σινότης f. `damage, flaw' (gloss.). 6. ἐπισίνιος ἐπίβουλος H. 7. σινόω ( προ- σίνομαι) = σίνομαι (Man., Vett. Val. a. o.) with σινωτικός `harmful' (late). 8. σίνδρων = πονηρός (Phot.), also `slave born of a slave' (Seleukos ap. Ath.), also as PN; cf. Masson on Hipponax 121 w. n. 3; gen. pl. σινδρῶν πονηρῶν, βλαπτικῶν H.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: The present σίνομαι (second. - έομαι; cf. Schwyzer 721) wit generalized length of the ι (on the unclear σίνονται Sapph. 26, 4 s. Hamm Gramm. $217a) can be best understood as yotformation *σίν-ι̯ομαι (Schwyzer 694). If inherited, σίνομαι must like κλίνω, κρίνω contain a present-forming ν, which spread not only to the sporadic aoristforms but also to the nouns σίνος, σίντης a. o. -- Not certainly explained. PGr. *τϜι-ν- can on itself be connected with σής (if from *τϜη[ι̯]-ς) and with Germ. Þwi- in OE Þwīnan `become weak, disappear' a. o. (Wood Mod. Phil. 5, 268); apart from the semant. polyinterpretability of the relevant words, there are both for σής and for Þwīnan other explanations, s. on σής and WP. 1, 702 f. (Pok. 1054) w. lit. To be rejected explanations of σίνομαι in W.-Hofmann s. sine and sonium; older lit. in Bq and Lidén IF 19, 351 w. n. 2. -- Cf. σιφλός.Page in Frisk: 2,708-709Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σίνομαι

Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `shade' (Od.), also `variegated hem or edging of a dress' (hell. inschr. a. pap., Men.; Wilhelm Glotta 14, 82 f.).Other forms: ion. - ιήCompounds: E.g. σκια-τροφέω, - έομαι (Ion. σκιη-), Att. etc. also σκια - τραφέω, - έομαι (: σκια-τραφής like εὑτραφής a. o.; to τραφῆναι) `to live or to raise in the shadow, indoors, to grow up pampered' (IA.; after βου-κολέω a. o., Schwyzer 726); βαθύ-σκιος `with deep shadow, deeply shaded' (h. Merc. a. o.), κατά-, ἐπί-σκιος a. o. beside κατα-, ἐπι-σκιάζω; on δολιχό-σκιος s. δολιχός (aa. to am other interpretation [Prellwitz, also Treu Von Homer zur Lyrik 119 f. w. n. 1 with Leumann] `with long ash').Derivatives: 1. σκιάς, - άδος f. `shade-roof, tent-roof, pavilion', also name of a θόλος in Athens etc. (Eup., Theoc., Att. inscr. a.o.). 2. σκιάδ-ιον n. `sunscreen' (com., Thphr. a. o.). 3. - ίσκη f. `id.' (Anacr.). 4. σκί-αινα f. (Arist.), - αινίς f. (Gal.; v. l. σκινίς), - αδεύς m. (hell. a. late) fishn. (after the dark colour, Strömberg 27, s. also Thompson Fishes s. σκίαινα; cf. Bosshardt 69; not correct Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 178 n. 3); to this σκιαθίς `id.' (Epich.), from the island namen Σκίαθος? (Strömberg l. c.). 5. σκι-όεις `rich of shadows, casting shade, shaded' (ep. poet. Il.; favoured by the metre, Schwyzer 527 w. lit., Sjölund Metr. Kürzung 149); - άεις (Hdn.; also Pi. Pae. 6, 17?). 6. - ερός, also - αρός `id.' (esp. ep. poet. Λ 480; Schwyzer 482 w. n. 8 a. lit., Chantraine Form. 230). 7. - ώδης `shadowy, dark' (Hp., E., Arist. a. o.). 8. - ακός `provided with shade' ( ὡρολόγιον Pergam. IIa; Hdn.). 9. - ωτός `provided with a hem (σκιά)' (Peripl. M. Rubr., pap.). -- 10. Denom. verb σκιάω (Od., hell. a. late epic), σκιάζω (IA.), σκιάσαι (Φ 232; after ἐλᾰ́-σαι a.o., Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 410; metri. used, s. Debrunner REIE 1, 3), fut. Att. σκιῶ, late σκιάσω, perf. pass. ἐσκίασμαι (Semon., S. a. o.), aor. σκιασθῆναι (E., Pl., Arist.), also w. ἐπι-, κατα-, συν-, περι-, ἀπο-, `to shade, to overshadow, to shroud in darkness' (on the meaning Radermacher Festschr. Kretschmer 163 ff.); from this ( ὑπο-, συ-)σκίασις, ( ἐπι- etc.) σκιασμός, ( ἐπι- etc.) σκίασμα, σκιασ-τής, - τικός (almost always late); as backformations function the bahuvrihi κατα-, ἐπί-σκιος a. o. -- On σκιά and derivv. in Homer and in the Aeol. lyric Treu Von Homer zur Lyrik 115ff., 213ff. (for Hom. not convincing).Etymology: Old word for `shadow', which with Alb. hije, Toch. B skiyo `id.' can be identified as IE *sḱii̯ā (Jokl Untersuchungen 63ff. with Meyer, cf. Mann Lang. 28, 39; v. Windekens Orbis 12, 193 with Couvreur Arch. Or. 18, 128). Besides in Indo-Iran. with lengthened grade Skt. chāyā́ f. `shadow', also `image, reflex, semblance', NPers. sāya `shadow' (Av. a-saya- `who throws no shadow': ἄ-σκιος) and with unclear basis Latv. sejs `id.' (Endzelin Zeitschr. slav. Phil. 16, 113f.). The word was orig. inflected with ablaut, approx. * skeh₁ieh₂, gen. * skh₁ieh₂-s (cf. on γλῶσσα). The assumption of IE ā[i]: i was based only on the connection with σκηνή, Dor. σκᾱνά̄ `tent', which is however improbable. -- An n-suffix is seen in Slavic, e.g. OCS sěnь, Russ. sénь f. `shadow' with uncertain vowel (IE ē, oi, ai, ǝi), thus after Jokl a. o. in the very complicated Alban. forms, e.g. hē, (h)ona; to this with r-n-change σκιερός, σκιαρός (Benveniste Origines 14). See Adams Dict. Toch B 706 s.v. skiyo. With t-suffix OIr. scāth `shadow' (after Vendryes Ét. celt. 7, 438 with Fick); diff. s. σκότος. -- Whether the hapaxes σκαιός `shadowy' (Nic. Th. 660) and σκοιός in H. ( σκοιά σκοτεινά, σκοιόν... σύσκιον) can be considered as representatives of a in Greek still existing ablaut (Solmsen Unt. 278 n. 2 [p. 279f.]), is uncertain. -- Mayrhofer EWAia 1, 559 recontructs * skeh₁-ieh₂-, from which the Skt. form can be explained. Lubotsky however, Incontri lingu. 24 (2001), 34f. is not certains about the evidence for h₁, and starts from the oblique cases * skH-ieh₂-, which became *skHii̯- with Sievers, and * skiH-eh₂- with metathesis; this may have been the basis of the Greek form.Page in Frisk: 2,730-731Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σκια
