1 λεκάνη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `basin, dish' (Ar., inscr., pap.)Derivatives: λεκάν-ιον (Ar.), - ίδιον (Poll., Eust.), - ίς f. (Ar., Plu., Luc.), - ίσκη f. (com.). Also λέκος n. `id.' (Hippon.) with λεκάριον (hell.), λεκίς f. (Epich.), - ίσκος m. (Hp.) `id.'; - ίσκιον as measure (Hp.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: With λεκάνη cf. πατάνη, οὑράνη a. other names of utensils in - άνη, - ανον in Chantraine Form. 197ff., Schwyzer 489f.; beside it λέκος as ἄγγος; λέκος: λεκάνη like στέφος: στεφάνη, ἕρκος: ἑρκάνη (late; s. on ἕρκος). - Connections outside Greek are uncertain; usually λέκος, λεκάνη together with Lat. lanx `dish' are as *lowering, bending inward' derived from a great group of words from `bend, bow' (IE (* el-ek-), with also λοξός and λέχριος (s. vv.); s. WP. 1, 157f., Pok. 308, W.-Hofmann s. lanx; this is certainly wong, as the word is Pre-Greek; thus Ernout-Meillet s. lanx. - From λεκάνη Arab. leken, Osm. lejen \> NGr. τὸ λεγένι `bowl, dish', ORuss. legin `kind of vase'; Maidhof Glotta 10,13, Vasmer Wb. s. v. (cf. also on lochánь).Page in Frisk: 2,103Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λεκάνη

Epigr., com.).Other forms: also κότυλος m. `id.'Compounds: Compp., e. g. κοτυλ-ήρυτος `to be scooped with cups' (Ψ 34), ἡμι-κοτύλη `a half κ.' (pap.), δι-κότυλος `measuring two κ.' (Hp., pap.).Derivatives: Diminut. κοτυλίς ` socket' (Hp.), κοτυλίσκος, - ίσκη, - ίσκιον `small cup' (com.), κοτυλίδιον (Eust.). - κοτυληδών, - όνος f. name of diff. cup-like hollows (on the formation Chantraine Formation 361), e. g. ` sucker' (ε 433 etc.), also as plant-name, prob. ` Cotyledon umbilicus' (Hp., Nic., Dsc.; after the suckerlike leaves, Strömberg Pflanzennamen 44f.), with κοτυληδονώδης `nipple-like' (Gal.). - κοτυλιαῖος, - ιεῖος `measuring a κ.' (hell.; Mayser Pap. 1: 3, 95), κοτυλώδης ` cup-like' (Ath.); κοτύλων, - ωνος m. `toper' (Plu.). - Denomin. verb κοτυλίζω `with k., i. e. sell in small quantities' (IA.) with κοτυλισμός, - ιστής, - ιστί (hell.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: One th formation in - ύλη (diminut.?) Schwyzer 485, Chantraine Form. 250f. - Close is Lat. catīnus `(flat) dish'; the deviation in vowel and formation makes the comparison very uncertain (cf. Ernout-Meillet s. catīnus). Further s. Pok. 586, W.-Hofmann s. catīnus. New suggestion by Machek Stud. in hon. Acad. d. Dečev 49: to Czech. kotlati` become hollow' (denom. verb). - A loan would be quite possible in the case of a vessel - Fur. 101, 181, adduces κόνδυ `a cup' with κονδύλιον; he notes 205 n. 14 that - υλη is well known in Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 1,933-934Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κοτύλη

19 κύλιξ
κύλιξ, - ικοςGrammatical information: f. (m.)Meaning: `(drinking) cup' (posthom.).Compounds: Some compp., e.g. κυλικ-ήρυτος `scooped with a cup' (Call.), εὑ-κύλικος `with beautiful cups' (AP).Derivatives: Diminut.: κυλίκιον (Thphr.), κυλίσκη (D. H., Poll., hardly from - ικ-ίσκη Schwyzer 542), - ίσκιον (Poll.); - ίχνη (Alc., Ar.; Chantraine Formation 195); Lat. LW [loanword] culigna (cf. W.-Hofmann s. calix); - ίχνιον (Ar., hell.), - ιχνίς (Achae.); further κυλικ-εῖον `cup-stander' (comp., pap.), - ειος `belonging to a cup' (Poll.), - ώδης 'κ.-like' (sch.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Agrees but for the stem-vowel with Lat. calix `deep bowl, cup' (from where NHG Kelch etc.), but a variation a\/u is unknown. The word κάλυξ (s.v.) `seed-vessel, husk' is not identical with our word for the same reason. With anlaut sk Umbr. skalçe-ta `ex patera', cf. σκαλλίον κυλίκιον μικρόν, σκαλίς σκαφεῖον H. does not belong here for the same reason (s. v.). (Also not here Skt. kaláśa- m. `jar, pot, dish'.) As with so many names of cups etc. we must reckon with loans. Wrong Pok. 550 f., W.-Hofmann s. calix (also Ernout-Meillet) who consider the word as IE. Connecting IE * (s)kel- is (in spite of NHG Schale a. o.) not convincing. See Fur. 110, 132 with n. 65, who points to κυλί-σκ-η and κυλίχν-ιον etc. with aspiration before the nasal (which is un-Greek and un-IE). So the word is Pre-Greek. - ικ is a typical Pre-Greek suffix (Beekes, Pre-Greek, suffixes); κυλ-ικ- has a typical Pre-greek structure (ib.)Page in Frisk: 2,46-47Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κύλιξ
