48 Macau
Portuguese colonial territory in south China. Portugal's last colony, in effect, and by agreement turned over to the People's Republic of China in 1999. Since Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in 1557, this tiny territory of 11 square kilometers (7 square miles) has been a Portuguese colony headed by a Portuguese administration. Long a dependency of the Viceroyalty of Goa, Portuguese India, Macau's prosperity depended on the vicissitudes of diplomatic and trade relations between China and the West. For nearly three centuries (ca. 1557-1842), Macau was the only Western entrepót-outpost-enclave-colony on the China coast. Even after Japan expelled Western traders in the 17th century, Macau had a key role as the link between China and the West. This role changed after Great Britain seized neighboring Hong Kong (1842) as a colony. Thereafter, Macau fell into the shadow of a booming Hong Kong. While it was a remote dependency of Portugal in the Far East, Macau has long played a multiplicity of roles: China's window on the West, preempted in the 1840s by Hong Kong; sanctuary and refuge for various waves of refugees from China or Hong Kong; because of its peculiar international status and location, a center of vice (gambling, smuggling, prostitution, and drug traffic); and a meeting place and exchange point for the Chinese and Portuguese civilizations.Following the Revolution of 25 April 1974, Lisbon offered to return Macau to mainland China, but the offer was refused, and negotiations between China and Portugal ensued. In the 1980s, China and Portugal negotiated a settlement whereby Portuguese sovereignty would continue until December 1999; "a Chinese territory under Portuguese administration" was the formula's general description. Chinese businessmen controlled Macau's economy, including its lucrative gambling and tourist industries, while Portugal provided nominal law and order. The settlement included a pledge by China that protection for the use of Portuguese language and the maintenance of democratic liberties would be continued for at least 50 years. In late December 1999, the last Portuguese governor-general hauled down the flag of Portugal, and the People's Republic of China assumed sovereignty over Macau. In effect, Portugal's formal overseas empire ceased with this historic change. During colonial times, Macau was known for its gambling casinos. Since its return to China, gambling has become its biggest industry and, in 2006, Macau overtook Las Vegas in gaming revenue. -
49 λανθάνω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `keep somebody unaware, escape notice, be unknown, unnoted; make somebody forget something', midd. `forget, ' (details on the use of the forms in Schwyzer 699 a. 748).Other forms: λήθω ( ληθάνω η 221), aor. Aeol. λά̄θω, λά̄σω, λᾶσαι, λέλᾱθα.Compounds: also with prefix. esp. ἐπι-.Derivatives: A. from λαθεῖν. - έσθαι: 1. λάθρη, -ᾱ adv. `secretly' (Il.; λάθρᾰ h. Cer. 240) with λαθραῖος `secret' (IA.). λάθριος (S. Ichn. 66 [lyr.], hell.), - ίδιος, - ιμαῖος (late) `id.'; adv. λαθρᾰ́-δᾱν (Corinn.; like κρυφᾰ́-δᾱν), λαθρη-δόν, - δά, - δίς (late); as 1. member λαθρο-, e.g. λαθρό-νυμφος `secretly married' (Lyc.), for the older variant λᾰθι-, e. g. λαθι-κηδής (X 83), prop. "at which the sorrows remain hidden" but also with the verb directly associated: `making sorrows forgotten' (s. Schwyzer 447, Bechtel Lex. s. v.); cf. λᾱθι- s. C. - 2. λαθητικός `who avoids notice' (Arist.; λάθησις sch. Gen. A 36) ; 3. λάθος n. `forgetfulness' (NGr. for *λῆθος, λᾶθος s. B.). - B. From λήθειν: 1. λήθη, Dor. λάθα `forgetfulness' (Β 33; cf. Porzig Satzinhalte 233) with ληθαῖος `making forgotten, forgetful' (Call., Lyc.), also ληθήμων, ληθώδης, λήθιος (H.). 2. λᾶθος n. = λήθη (Theoc.); λαθοσύνα f. `id.' (E. IT 1279, uncertain, cf. Wyss - συνη 42). 3. ληθεδών, - όνος f. `id.' (AP, APl.) with ληθεδανός = ληθαῖος (Luc.); Chantraine Form. 361 f. 4. ἔκ-λη-σις (ω 485), ἐπί-λᾱ-σις (Pi. P. 1, 46) `forgetting', from ἐκ-, ἐπι-λήθειν; besides from the simplex the typologically older λῆσ-τις `id.' (S., E.); Schwyzer 504, Chantraine 276, Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 36 f., Porzig Satzinhalte 196. -- 5. λήσ-μων `forgeting, forgetful' (Them.) with λησμοσύνη (Hes. Th. 55; after μνημοσύνη; also S. Ant. 151); ἐπιλήσ-μων `id.' (Att.) with ἐπιλησμον-ή, - μοσύνη (Crat., LXX), ἐπιλησμον-έω, λησμον-έω (M.- a. NGr.); details in Georgacas Glotta 36, 167f. (not always correct). - C. As 1.member in verbal governing compp.: 1. λησί-μβροτος `taking men unawares, deceiver' (h. Merc.; Zumbach Neuerungen 24); 2. λᾱθί-πονος `forgetting (making forgotten) sorrows' (S.; cross with λᾰθι-; Schwyzer 444); 3. λᾱθ-άνεμος `escaping the wind' (Simon.).Etymology: On ἀληθής, λήθαργος s. vv.; cf. also ἄλαστος. As basis of the Greek system serves the present λήθω, λά̄θω; beside this stands from the beginning the thematic zero grade aorist λᾰθεῖν and λελᾰθεῖν, - έσθαι with the perf. midd. λέλασμαι and isolated nominal derivv., esp. the couple λάθ-ρᾱ: λαθ-ι- (Schwyzer 447 f.); also the nasalpresent λα-ν-θ-άνω (beside λήθω which is in Hom. better attested) is perhaps an innovation (after μαθεῖν: μανθάνω?; Kuiper Nasalpräs. 156). -As in πύθω (: πύος), βρίθω (: βριαρός) also in λήθω the - θ- can be isolated as an added (present) element; a dentalless form seems indeed found in λῃ̃το ἐπελάθετο (beside λήιτο ἐπε\<λά\> θετο) H. (on - ι- s. below). Thus connection with the synonymous Lat. lă-t-eō `be hidden' becomes probable (cf. for the formation the opposite păt-eō; s. also on δατέομαι). - Other combinations are because of the meaning either very uncertain or wrong: Toch. A lä(n)t-, B lät-, lant- `go out' (Pedersen Tocharisch 173), Slav.: OCS lajati ' ἐνεδρεύειν', Tchech. lákati `persecute' (hard to separate from identical verbs meaning ' ὑλακτεῖν' resp. `desire'; Germ. nouns as OWNo. lōmr `treason, deceit', OHG luog `hole, lair'. - For an original long diphthong lāi- are both λαίθαργος (which is Pre-Greek, s. v.) and λῃ̃το unreliable evidence; can λῃ̃το be from *l̥h₂-to? - On Λητώ s. v. - Further forms in Pok. 651, W.-Hofmann s. lateō.Page in Frisk: 2,80-82Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λανθάνω

52 πράσσω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to pass through, to travel' (only ep.), `to finish, to accomplish, to do, to exact', intr. `to come to an end, to succeed, to act'.Other forms: Att. - ττω, Cret. - δδω, ep. Ion. πρήσσω, fut. πράξω, Ion. - ήξή, aor. πρᾱ̃ξαι, - ῆξαι (all Il.), pass. πραχθῆναι (S., Th.), perf. πέπρᾱγα, - ηγα (Pi., Hdt.), -ᾱχα, - ηχα (Att., Hdt.), pass. πέπραγμαι (A.).Compounds: Often w. prefix, e.g. δια-, εἰσ-, κατα-, συν-. Compounds, e.g. εὑ-, κακο-πρᾱγ-ία f. `prosperity, success', resp. `accident, misfortune' (Pi., Att.) with εὑ-, κακο-πρᾱγ-έω (Att.); anal. δυσ-, κακο-πρᾱγής (Vett. Val., H., not from πρᾶγος); also εὑ-πραξ-ία, Ion. - πρηξ-ίη f., after πρᾶξις, πρᾶξαι.Derivatives: (Compact survey). Nom. actionis: 1. πρᾶξις, πρῆξις (also w. δια-, κατα- a.o.) f. `realisation, accomplishment, advancement, act, exaction' (Il.) with πραξ-είδιον n. dimin. (EM), - ιμος `realisable' (Cyprus II-IIIp), `recoverable' (Delos I-IIp), also πράκτιμος (from Dor. *πρᾶκτις or after πρακτι-κός?) `liable to a money-penalty' (Delphi IIa). Further, with formation after the adj. abstr. (cf. Schwyzer 468 f.), the compp. προ-πραξ-ία f. `precedence in negotiation' (Acarnan. inscr. V-IVa), ὑπερ-πράξ-ιον n. `over-exaction, blackmailing' (Mylasa Vp); cf. also 10. below. -- 2. πρᾶγμα (posthom.), Ion. πρῆχμα (\< - κσμ-; inscr.), πρῆγμα (Hdt.; for πρῆχμα?, s. Schulze Festschr. Kretschmer 217 ff. = Kl. Schr. 409ff.) n. `performed act, fact, business', pl. `facts, state affairs etc.'; as 2. member in ἀ-, πολυ-πράγμων etc.; from this πραγμά-τιον, - τικός, - τίας, - τᾶς, - τώδης, - τεύομαι with - τευμα, - τεία, - τειώδης, - τευτής, - τευ-τικός. -- 3. πρᾶγος n. poet. replacement for the worn out πρᾶγμα (Pi., trag.; Schwyzer 512). -- 4. πρακτύς Dor. = πρᾶξις (EM). -- Nom. agentis: 5. πρακτήρ, πρηκτήρ, - ῆρος m. `executor, tradesman' (Hom.), `exactor' (hell.) with - τήριος `effective, decisive' (A.). -- 6. πράκτωρ, - ορος m. `executor, avenger' (A., S., Antiph.), `exactor, tax official' (Att., pap.) with - τορ-ικός, - ειος, - εύω with - εῖον, - εία (- ία?); on the meaning of πράκτωρ Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 220f., 2, 8 f. a. 49 f., Benveniste Noms d'agent 32; attempt to a semant. differentiation of πρακτήρ and πράκτωρ ibd. 47. --7. εἰσ-, ἐκ-πράκτης m. `collector, tax official' (Aq.). -- 8. πρηξών = ἀγοραῖος, i.e. `notary' (Sicil.; Theognost.); prob. from πρῆξις (Schwyzer 517). -- 9. Adj. πρακτικός `concerning action, skilled, practical' (Att.; Chantraine Études 140).Etymology: All forms go back on a common stem πρᾱκ- (analog. πρᾱγ-; Schwyzer 715), which is a κ-enlargement of the zero grade πρᾱ- in πρᾱ-θῆναι, πέ-πρᾱ-μαι, πι-πρά̄-σκομαι etc. (s. πέρνημι) with further connection with πέρᾱ, πείρω (s. vv.) etc. The function of the velar (cf. πλήσσω: πλη-γ-ή, τμή-γ-ω: τέμ-ν-ω, τέμα-χος a.o.) can be designated as terminative (Schwyzer 702 w. n. 5 a. lit.). Assuming a nominal *πρᾱκ- (Schw. 496) is superfluous and unconvincing. For the primary character of πράσσω, πρᾶξαι tell also the old deriv. πρᾶξις, πρῆξις; on this Schw. 505 (where n. 6 is reckoned with a "derived πρήσσω"). -- On meaning and use of πράσσω s.
