21 Modal verbs
1) Глаголы can, may, ought (to), must, could, might, shall, should, will, would относятся к группе модальных вспомогательных глаголов.При этом глагол could является формой прошедшего времени глагола can, а глагол might является формой прошедшего времени глагола may. Однако сведений о том, как употребляются глаголы can и may недостаточно для того, чтобы правильно употреблять глаголы could и might. Глаголы could и might не всегда указывают на прошедшее время.Глаголы need и dare могут употребляться и как немодальные глаголы (о need см. needn't, don't need to, don't have to, mustn't).2) Модальные глаголы не употребляются самостоятельно, а только в сочетании с инфинитивом без частицы to (см. Bare infinitive) смыслового (основного) глагола (см. Main verbs). Исключения составляют предложения с опущениями слов типа Yes, I can.3) Модальные глаголы выражают вероятность, необходимость, возможность, желательность совершения действия, выраженного основным глаголом.4) Модальный глагол ставится перед формой основного глагола.He may come — Он может прийти.

5) Модальные глаголы не получают окончания -s в форме 3-го лица ед.ч времени Present simple:6) У модальных глаголов нет форм Present participle, Past participle, Past tense form.
