24 σύρω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to draw, to trail, to drag, to pull, to ravish, to sweep'(IA.).Other forms: Aor. σῦραι, pass. σῠρῆναι (late), fut. συρῶ (LXX), perf. σέσυρμαι, - κα (hell. a. late).Compounds: Very often w. prefix in diff. shades of meaning, e.g. δια- (also `to hackle, to mock'), ἐπι- (also `to be, treat neglectful etc.'), κατα-, παρα-. As 1. member in σύργαστρος (s.v.)?Derivatives: 1. σύρμα ( ἀπό-, ἐπί-, παρά-, περί-) n. `train-dress, sweepings, dragging movement' (Ion., X., hell. a. late) with συρμα-τῖτις κόπρος `manure-heap consisting of sweepings' (Thphr.; Redard 109), - τικη φωνή `drawn-out accent' (VIIp), - τὶς στρατιά ἡ τὰ συμψήγματα καὶ φρύγανα σύρουσα καὶ συλλέγουσα H. 2. συρμός ( ἐπι-, περι-, ὑπο-) m. `grinding, dragging, pulling movement' (of a wind, a gulf, a meteor, a snake a.o.; Arist. etc), `the vomiting' (Nic.); δια- σύρω `the pulling apart, to bemock' (hell. a. late); from this συρ-μάδες f. pl. `snowdrifts' (late), - μαία, Ion. - μαίη f. `vomitive, radish' (Ion., Ar. etc.), also name of a Lacon. priestrank (inscr., H.), with - μαΐζω `to take a vomitive', -μαϊσμός m. (Hdt., medic.), - μίον λάχανόν τι σελίνῳ ἐοικός H., - μιστήρ ξυλο-πώλης H. 3. συρμή f. `trailing tail of a snake' (sch.). -- 4. σύρ-της m. `towing-rope' (Man., H.), - τῶν gen. pl. (nom. sg. - της or - τός) name of a dance (Akraiphia Ip), διασύρ-της m. `slanderer' (Ptol.), δια-, ἐκ-συρτικός (hell. a. late). 5. ἀνασυρτ-όλις f. `lewd woman' (Hippon.; cf. οἰφόλις and Chantraine Form. 237 f.). 6. Prob. also Σύρτις f. name of a sea-gulf on the northcoast of Africa with sandy shores and dangerous breakers (Hdt. etc.) as "the pulling one" (cf. v. Wilamowitz on Tim. Pers. 99); metaph. `destruction' (Tim. Pers. 99, H.). 7. σύρσις f. ( διά- σύρω) `the drawing of a plough' (late). -- With φ -enlargement: 8. σύρφη φρύγανα H. 9. συρφ-ετός m. `sweepings, filth' (Hes., Call., Plu. a.o.), `rabble' (Pl. a.o.) with - ετώδης `vulgar' (Plb., Luc. a.o.); cf. νιφετός a.o. (Chantraine Form. 300, Schwyzer 501). 10. -ᾱξ m. `rabble' (Ar. V. 673 [anap.], Luc.), popular-hypocoristic formation. -- On σύρφος s. σέρφος. Cf. ἀσυρής.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Prob. to σαίρω `sweep' (s. v. w. lit.), but without certain cognates outside Greek. With σύρφ-η, - ετός, - αξ one compares a Germ. word for `sweep, turn (sweep turning), wipe off' in Goth. af-, bi-swairban ' εξαλεῖψαι, ἐκμάξαι', OHG swerban `drive quickly to and fro, whirl, wipe off' etc., to which also Celt., e.g. Welsh chwerfu `whirl, turn around' (Persson Stud. 55, WP. 2, 529f., Pok. 1050f. w. lit.). The semant. certainly possible connection presents the same phonetic problem as σέλας, σῦς etc. (s. vv.). In auslaut agrees σύρφη, prob. not accidentally, to the synonymous κάρφη; so formally influenced by it? An old variation bh: m in σύρ-φη: συρ-μός (Specht Ursprung 269) does not help; but it would show Pre-Greek origin -- The connection with σαίρω, both from *tu̯r̥- is hardly convincing.Page in Frisk: 2,823-824Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σύρω

From it 1. dimin. ῥυμβ-ίον n. `little top' (sch.); 2. ῥομβ-ωτός `having the form of a rhombus' (hell. a. late); 3. - ηδόν `in the way of a rh.' (Man.); 4. - έω ( ῥυ-) `to go in circles' (Pl. a.o.) with - ητής m. `top' (Orph.), ἐπι- ῥέμβομαι `to whirl like a hummingtop' (Sapph.); - όομαι `to be turned into a rh.' (Hero). Also ῥυμβ-όνες f. pl. `wrigglings' of a snake (A. R.; cf. ἀγκ-όνες a.o.), - ονάω ( ῥεμβ-) `to sway, to hurl away' (Phld., Ael.; after σφενδονάω).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: ῥόμβος already in Pi., proves also for the much later attested primary ῥέμβομαι an early date. The byform ῥύμβος reminds of cases like ῥοφέω: ῥυφέω (cf. Schwyzer 351 f.); note also ῥυβόν ἐπικαμ-πές (EM, Hdn. Gr.). -- With ῥέμβομαι one might compare Germ., MLG wrimpen `contract (one's face), rümpfen' (Persson Beitr. 1, 498). An IE *u̯remb- seems nevertheless doubtful, first because of the deviating meanings, second because we have to reckon with several kinds of rhiming formations (s. lit. in Persson l.c. and WP. 1, 276). At least as uncertain is the comparison with Lith. reñgtis `bow, buck' (de Saussure MSL 8, 443 n.) a.o. (s. Lidén Ein balt.-slav. Anlautges. 14 f.). Together with ῥάμφος, ῥέμφος, ῥάμνος, ῥάβδος, ῥέπω, ῥέμβομαι forms a rather motley heap, in which one finds a root u̯er- enlarged with a labial (β, φ, π) with the most flexible meaning `turn'; beside the labials one finds also velar and dental enlargements, s. WP. 1, 270ff., Pok. 1152ff. (after Persson Beitr. 1, 497ff.). -- The forms with ῥυμβ-, ῥυβ- seem to point to a Pre-Greek word.Page in Frisk: 2,648-649Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ῥέμβομαι

33 ῥόθος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `the roar of the waves, of the oars', metaph. `noise' in gen. (Hes., A. Opp.); `path, trail' (Nic., after Plu. in Hes. 13 Boeot.).Other forms: S. below.Compounds: Often as 2. member, e.g. ἁλί-ρροθος `roared around by the sea' (trag., Mosch.), ταχύ-ρροθοι λόγοι `quickly rushing words' (A.); παλι-ρρόθιος `rushing back' (Od., hell. epic). On ἐπίρροθος s. v.Derivatives: ῥόθιος, f. - ιάς `roaring, clamorous' (ep. ε 412, also late prose), mostly - ιον, - ια n. sg. a. pl. `roaring wave(s), breaking(s), high-tide, loud stroke of the oar', metaph. `noise, bluster, rush' (poet. Pi., trag. [mostly in lyr.], also late prose). -- To ῥόθος, prob. as denom. (cf. Schwyzer 726), ῥοθέω, also w. ἐπι-, δια-, `to roar, to clamour' (A., S.); ὁμο-, κακο-ρροθέω = ὁμο-, κακο-λογέω (Hp., S., E., Ar.); from ῥόθιον: ῥοθι-άζω `to make a rushing sound (with the oar)' (com.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Expressive word without agreement outside Greek. The comparison (Fick 2, 318) with Celt. words for `liquidity, stream', OCorn. stret gl. `latex', MCorn. streyth `stream' is semant. noncommittal and also phonetically not quite comvincing because of the final dentals (Celt. t = IE t, Gr. θ = IE dh). The connection of Germ. OHG stredan `seethe, whirl, boil' (J. Schmidt Voc. 2, 282 f.) has the same phonetical weaknesses. Further forms (also from Slav.) in Bq and WP. 2, 704f., Pok. 1001 f., where also on the analysis (Persson Stud. 46, 165) in sr-edh- (to ser- `stream'; s. ὁρμή). Cf. also W.-Hofmann s. fretum and verū. -- On ῥάθαγος s. ῥαθαπυγίζω. -- Cf. the gloss ῥάθαγος = ῥόθος sch. Nic. Th. 194, H. and ῥαθα- = ῥοθο-πυγίζω suggests that it is a Pre-Greek word (with variation).Page in Frisk: 2,661Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ῥόθος
