Финальное признание имеет важнейшее значение для понимания картины, и Что же случилось с Крошкой Джейн? относится к разряду тех фильмов, которые надо смотреть как минимум дважды: в 1-й раз – чтобы испытать на себе дьявольскую ловкость режиссера и следовать за ним во все укромные закоулки сюжета; во 2-й – чтобы осознать всю реалистичность и извращенность его главной идеи. Джейн и Бланш – 2 половинки одной темной души, порожденной разочарованиями и временем, 2 сестры-близняшки, родственные своей чудовищностью. Джейн, палачу достались гнев, безобразность, нелепая старость, жестокость, склонность к насилию и безумию; на долю Бланш, так называемой «жертвы», выпали копящаяся внутри злоба, лицемерие, скрытое упорство во лжи и жестокости. По ходу пугающего развития фильма поначалу кажется, что его персонажи четко разделены по принципу добра и зла, однако развязка рассеивает эту иллюзию в пух и прах и швыряет в лицо зрителю гигантский и всеобъемлющий пессимизм Олдрича. Пройдя (в одном-единственном гениальном фильме Целуй меня до смерти, Kiss Me Deadly) сквозь весь мир нуара, ставший от этого еще мрачнее, Олдрич почувствовал тягу к освоению других миров, где он мог бы выразить свой апокалипсический взгляд на мир. Он нашел такой мир в этом фильме, попутно создав целый жанр, породив множество подражателей и указав выдающимся пожилым актрисам путь, позволяющий избежать академизма и скучного старческого покоя. Ведь можно предположить и то, что вся эта история – плод воображения героини. Впрочем, следует сказать, что такого намерения фильм не преследует. Переживания героини Мии Фэрроу во всех отношениях поданы как реальные и неоспоримые. Главная тема фильма – муки, испытываемые женщиной, беременной от Сатаны, – необыкновенно потрясла публику, что предвидели Касл и 1-е читатели книги. На самом деле, по замыслу инициаторов проекта, Полански всего лишь отшлифовал драгоценный материал.В последней из 3 глав, посвященных фильму, Касл не может удержаться, чтобы не рассказать – безо всякого удовольствия – о странных и пугающих последствиях фильма. Все началось с того, что его кабинет наводнили письма со смертельными угрозами. Сам Касл попал в больницу с камнями в почках: пришлось срочно делать операцию.
