эквивалентно глаголу refuse, реже decline: отказаться прийти – to refuse to come, отказаться выслушать кого-л. – to refuse to listen to a person. д.) передается глаголами reject, decline и refuse. Reject имеет в виду прямой и решительный отказ: решительно отказаться от предложения – to reject a proposition. Decline часто предполагает вежливый, косвенно высказанный отказ: отказаться от чести председательствовать на банкете – to decline the honour of presiding at the banquet. Например: отказаться от привычки – to give up a habit, отказаться от больного – to give up a patient, отказаться от всякой надежды – to abandon all hope. Give up и resign могут означать 'отказаться от, лишить себя чего-л., что имелось прежде': отказаться от должности – to give up a position и to resign a position. Русское отказаться в значении 'отречься, не признать своим, себе принадлежащим' имеет несколько английских эквивалентов: отказаться от своих слов – to go back upon one's words; отказаться от своей подписи – to deny one's signature; отказаться от своей дочери (сына) – to disown one's daughter (son); отказаться (отречься) от друзей – to renounce one's friends; отказаться от права, от престола, титула – to abdicate (to renounce) the right, to abdicate the throne, to renounce the title; отказаться (отречься) от веры – to renounce one's faith. передается сочетанием to deny oneself something: отказаться от удовольствия – to deny oneself a pleasure.
❢ This much-used verb has no multi-purpose equivalent in French and therefore is very often translated by choosing a synonym: to get lunch = to prepare lunch = préparer le déjeuner. get is used in many idiomatic expressions ( to get something off one's chest etc) and translations will be found in the appropriate entry (chest etc). This is also true of offensive comments ( get stuffed etc) where the appropriate entry would be stuff. Remember that when get is used to express the idea that a job is done not by you but by somebody else ( to get a room painted etc) faire is used in French followed by an infinitive ( faire repeindre une pièce etc). When get has the meaning of become and is followed by an adjective (to get rich/drunk etc) devenir is sometimes useful but check the appropriate entry (rich, drunk etc) as a single verb often suffices ( s'enrichir, s'enivrer etc). For examples and further uses of get see the entry below.1 ( receive) recevoir [letter, school report, grant] ; recevoir, percevoir [salary, pension] ; TV, Radio capter [channel, programme] ; did you get much for it? est-ce que tu en as tiré beaucoup d'argent? ; what did you get for your car? combien as-tu revendu ta voiture? ; we get a lot of rain il pleut beaucoup ici ; our garden gets a lot of sun notre jardin est bien ensoleillé ; we get a lot of tourists nous avons beaucoup de touristes ; you get lots of attachments with this cleaner il y a beaucoup d'accessoires fournis avec cet aspirateur ; you get what you pay for il faut y mettre le prix ; he's getting help with his science il se fait aider en sciences ;2 ( inherit) to get sth from sb lit hériter qch de qn [article, money] ; fig tenir qch de qn [trait, feature] ;3 ( obtain) ( by applying) obtenir [permission, divorce, custody, licence] ; trouver [job] ; ( by contacting) trouver [plumber, accountant] ; appeler [taxi] ; ( by buying) acheter [food item, clothing] (from chez) ; avoir [theatre seat, ticket] ; to get something for nothing/at a discount avoir qch gratuitement/avec une réduction ; to get sb sth, to get sth for sb ( by buying) acheter qch à qn ; I'll get sth to eat at the airport je mangerai qch à l'aéroport ;4 ( subscribe to) acheter [newspaper] ;5 ( acquire) se faire [reputation] ; he got his money in oil il s'est fait de l'argent dans le pétrole ;6 ( achieve) obtenir [grade, mark, answer] ; he got it right ( of calculation) il a obtenu le bon résultat ; ( of answer) il a répondu juste ; how many do I need to get? The major incentive for turning a territorial dispute into a war was the rich deposits of nitrates (then a vital raw material for the production of fertilizers and explosives) in the Atacama Desert. By acquiring the Atacama, Chile also deprived Bolivia of its only access to the sea at the port of Antofagasta, with inevitably damaging consequences for the future economic and commercial development of the country. Bolivia's desire for a salida al mar (“outlet to the sea”) led it to seek alternative access to the Atlantic, and this was partly behind the outbreak of the horrific Chaco War with Paraguay (1932-1935), though the interest of foreign oil companies in possible oil deposits in the Chaco region was at least as important a factor. Today, Bolivia has adopted the peaceful road of negotiations with Chile to resolve the problem.* * *f2 TRANSP departuretomar la salida start;dar la salida give the starting signal o the off4 COM:tiene salida there’s a market for it;salida a bolsa flotation5 figopportunity, opening;salida profesional career opportunity* * *salida nf1) : exitsalida de emergencia: emergency exit2) : leaving, departure3) solución: way out, solution4) : start (of a race)5) ocurrencia: wisecrack, joke6)salida del sol : sunrise* * *salida n1.
