1 ἵστημι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `set, position oneself, make stand' (Il.)Other forms: Dor. ἵστᾱμι, med. ἵσταμαι, aor. στῆσαι, στήσασθαι, fut. στήσω, aor. pass. σταθῆναι (Od.), fut. σταθήσομαι (Att.); intr. aor. στῆναι with fut. στήσομαι, perf. ἕστηκα.Derivatives: Several, partly inherited derivations are given s.v., s. ἱστός, σταθμός, σταμῖνες, στάσις, στατήρ, στήλη, στήμων, στοά etc.; s. also στάμνος, σταυρός.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [1004] * steh₂- -stand, set'Etymology: With the intr. athematic root aorist ἔ-στη-ν agrees exactly Skt. á-sthā-m, IE *h₁é-steh₂-m. Beside it stands without agreement outside Greek already in Hom. a transitive σ-aorist ἔ-στη-σ-α like ἔ-φῡ-σ-α beside ἔ-φῡ-ν a. o.; the intrans. future στή-σομαι, was originally built to ἔ-στη-ν, but was associated with the σ-aorist. Also the trans. reduplicated athematic present ἵ-στη-μι is limited to Greek; cf. τί-θη-μι, ἵ-η-μι, βί-βη-μι; both Indo-Iranian and Italo-Celtic have thematic formations, e. g. Skt. tí-ṣṭh-ati `stands' (*- sth₂-e-ti), Lat. si-st-it. The intr. perf. ἕ-στη-κ-α, pl. ἕ-στᾰ-μεν is excep for the κ-enlargment old and represents together wiht Skt. ta-stháu, pl. ta-sthi-má, Lat. ste-ti-mus an IE perfect. Old is also the verbal adjective στᾰ-τός (Il.) = Skt. sthĭ-tá- `standing', Lat. stă-tus, OWNo. sta-ðr stc, IE * sth₂tos. Details in Schwyzer 686f., 742, 755f., 762, 775f., 782. - Other IE forms are irrelevant for Greek (e. g. Lat. stō \< *stā-i̯ō = Lith. stō-ju, OCS sta-jǫ, Germ., e. g. OS OHG stān, stēn ` stehen' after gān, gēn ` gehen'), see Bq, Pok. 1004ff., W.-Hofmann s. stō etc. S. also ἱστάνω.Page in Frisk: 1,739Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἵστημι

2 στόχος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `erected pillar, post, mark, fixed target', also `suspicion' (after στοχάζομαι)? (very rare, partly in the transmission blurred attestations in A., E., X., Poll., Att. inscr.).Compounds: Compp. ἄ-στοχος `missing the target', εὔ-στοχος `aiming well, hitting well' (Att., hell. a. late) with ἀ-, εὑ-στοχ-ία, - έω.Derivatives: στοχ-άς, - άδος f. `raising for the poles of fixing-nets' (Poll.); also adj. of unclear meaning (E. Hel. 1480 [lyr.], prob. false v. l. for στολάδες); - ανδόν adv. `by conjecture' (Theognost.). Normal denom. στοχάζομαι, also w. κατα- a.o., `to target at sthing, to shoot, to seek to achieve, to guess, to conjecture, to explore' (Hp., Att., hell. a. late) with ( κατα-) στοχασμός, - ασις, - αστής, - αστικός; also στόχασμα n. `instrument for aiming' = `javelin' (E. Ba. 1205; cf. Chantraine Form. 145).Etymology: Without certain non-Greek agreement. As the original meaning seems to have been `erected pillar, post', we can compare some Balt.-Slav. and Germ. words. Thus Russ. stóg m. `heap, heap of hay', Bulg. stéžer `post to bind horses to, bar (Germ. Schoberstange)', Russ. dial. stož-á, -ará, -erá `supporting pillar of a haystack', čech. stožár `mast(tree)', Lith. stãgaras `thin long stalk of a plant', Latv. stę̄ga `long bar' etc. Because of Germ., e.g. OE staca, NEngl. stake, OWNo. staki m. `bar, javelin' (PGm. * stak-an-) for stóg etc. IE * steg- is also possible [no, the short vowel requires an aspirate: Winter-Kortlandt's law]. Beside the words mentioned Germ. presents also another group, which cannot be well be distinguished from it, which goes back on IE * stegh- (\> Slav. steg-), mostly in the nasalized form ste-n-gh-: Swed. stagg `stiff and standing grass, sholder, stickleback' (-gg express. gemin.), ODan. stag `point, germ'; OHG stanga, OWNo. stǫng f. ' Stange, stick, pole' (with OWNo. stinga, OE stingan `sting') etc. (Not from here with zero grade (IE *stn̥gh-) στάχυς?)Page in Frisk: 2,804Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > στόχος

7 στένω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to moan, to drone, to groan, to lament', also trans. `to mourn, to bewail' (ep. poet. Il., also late prose).Other forms: rare - ομαι, only pres. a. ipf.Compounds: Also w. prefix, e.g. ἀνα-, ἐπι-, μετα-, ὑπο-. Compp. e.g. ἀγά-στονος `moaning loudly, roaring' (Od. a.o.)Derivatives: Expressive enlargements, partly metr. condit. (Schwyzer 105 w. lit., 736; Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 112): 1. στεν-άζω, aor. - άξαι, fut. - άξω, also w. ἀνα-, ἐπι- a.o. (poet., also Hdt., D., LXX, Plu. a.o.). 2. στεν-άχω, - άχομαι, - αχέω, - αχῆσαι, - αχίζω, - αχίζομαι, also w. ἀνα-, ἐπι-, περι- a.o. (mostly ep. Il.); on the formation Schwyzer 702; nearest example ἰάχω (Risch 243) ?, not old disyll rootform (Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1,330). -- From στένω: 1. Στέν-τωρ m. PN (Ε 785; Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 14 w. n. 1, Benveniste Noms d'agent 54). 2. στόνος m. `the moaning etc.' (ep. poet. Il.); στονό-εις ( στονόϜεσαν f. sg. Corc. VIa) `full of moaning, causing moaning, woeful' (ep. poet. Il.; untenable on Ω 721 Szemerényi Sprache 11, 13 ff.). From στενάζω: στεναγ-μός m. `the moaning, sighing (Pi., trag., Pl.) with - μώδης (Paul. Aeg.); - μα n. `id.' (S., E., Ar.) with - ματώδης (Gal.). From στενάχω: στοναχή f. `id.' (ep. poet. Il.) with - αχέω, - αχῆσαι, - αχίζω, also w. ἐπι-, παρα- a.o. (ep. poet. Il.; besides, often as v.l., στεναχέω, - αχίζω); the o-vowel after στόνος (*στονή?), cf. also φορέω etc. (diff. Porzig Satzinhalte 231); with στοναχή cf. also καναχή, ταραχή a.o. (Schwyzer 498).Etymology: The fullgrade thematic στένω agrees in form and sense exactly with Skt. stanati `drone, thunder', Lith. stenù, Germ., e.g. OE stenan `moan, groan', IE *sténō. Thus στόνος = Russ. stón `groan, moan', Skt. abhiṣṭaná- `roaring thunder'; perh old parallel formations. Besides yotpresents: with full grade OCS. stenjǫ `στένω', with zero grade OE stunian, OWNo. stynja `id.' Athemat. ipf. Skt. stan (IE * sten-t); to this ipv. stanihi after anihi, rudihi a.o. A riming word or an old s-less byform is Aeol. τέννει στένει, βρύχεται H., (may be from *sten(h₂)ye\/o- with Pinault 1981, 267) which may agree with Skt. tanyati `sound loudly, thunder'; tanyati cann however also contain a zero grade and is then to be identified with OE Þunian `sound, recound'. Whether the velar in στενάχω is genetically connected to the similar formation in OE stenecian `cough', OWNo. stan-ka `moan', is very doubtful; in any case στενάζω is to be sonsidered as a Greek innovation. -- Further forms, for Greek without interest, in WP. 2, 626 f., Pok. 1021, W.-Hofmann and Ernout-Meillet s. tonō, Fraenkel s. stenė́ti, Vasmer s. stenátь and stón; there also further lit.Page in Frisk: 2,789-790Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > στένω
