2 μύλη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `handmill, mill, (Od.), (the nether) millstone', metaph. `molar' (LXX), `knee-cap, hard formation in a woman's womb' (Hp., Arist.).Other forms: hell. a. late also μύλος m. (LXX, NT, Str.; cf. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2,58)Compounds: Compp., e.g. μυλο-ειδής `as a millstone' (H 270), μυλή-φατος `ground by a mill' (β 355, A. R., Lyc.; after ἀρηΐ-φατος a.o.; diff. Chantraine Sprache 1, 145); χειρο-μύλη `handmill' (X.), also - μυλος ( Edict. Diocl.), - μυλον (Cass. Fel.; cf. on βούτυρον); dimin. - μύλιον (Dsc., pap.).Derivatives: A. Subst. 1. μύλαξ, - ακος m. `millstone, big rounded stone' (M161, AP, Opp.), cf. λίθαξ a.o. (Chantraine Form. 379). 2. From this with ρ-suffix μύλακρος m. `millstone' (Alcm.), pl. = γομφίοι ὀδόντες (H.); f. - ακρίς, - ίδος as attr. of λᾶας `millstone' (Alex. Aet.), as subst. `cockroach', also (influenced by ἀκρίς) `locust' (Ar. Fr. 583, Poll.); also - αβρίς `id.' (Pl. Com., Poll.; prob. after ἁβρός, ἅβρα), - ηθρίς `id.' (Poll.). 3. μυλών, - ῶνος m. `millhouse, mill' (Att.) with - ωνικός `miller' (pap.), - ώνιον dimin. (gloss.). 4. μυλωθρός m. `miller' (Att., Arist.); on the formation which is not quite clear cf. Chantraine Form. 373; from this - ωθρίς f. `milleress' name of a comedy of Eubulos; - ωθρικός `belonging to a miller' (Plu.), - ωθρέω `grind' (Men.); backformation - ωθρον = μυλών (Phot.)?; also - ωθριαῖοι adjunct of καλυπ-τῆρες (= `roof-tiles'?; Delos IIa, reading uncertain); beside it μυλωρός `miller' (Aesop., Poll.), after πυλωρός a.o. 5. μυλάριον dimin. `small handmill' (pap.). 6. μυλεύς m. surn. of Zeus as keeper of mills (Lyc.; Bosshardt 67). 7. μυλίας m. ( λίθος) `millstone, stone, from which millstones were made' (Pl., Arist., Str.; Chantraine Form. 96). 8. μυλίτης m. ( λίθος, ὀδούς) `millstone, molar' (Gal.). 9. Μυλόεις ποταμὸς Άρκαδίας H.; s. Krahe Beitr. z. Namenforsch. 2. 233. -- B. Adj., all rare and late: 1. μύλ-ιος `belonging to a mill' (Procop.); 2. μυλ-ικός `id.' (Ev. Luk., Gal.); 3. - ινος `consisting of millstones' (Smyrna); 4. - αῖος `working in a mill' (AP), - αῖον n. `handmill' (pap.); 5. - ιαῖοι ὀδόντες `molars' (medic.); 6. - όεις `consisting of a millstone, belonging to a mill' (Nic., Nonn.); 7. - ητικη ἔμπλαστρος `remedy for toothache' (Gal.). -- C. Verbs, all rare. 1. μυλιάω only in ptc. μῡλιόωντες `gnashing with the teeth' (Hes. Op. 530; on - ιάω Schwyzer 732); 2. μυλόομαι `be hardened, cicatrized' (Hp.). -- On itself stands μύλλω = βινέω (Theoc. 4,58) with μυλ(λ)άς f. `whore' (Phot., Suid.), μυλλός m. `cake in the form of the pudenda muliebria' (Ath. 14, 647 a; Sicilian).Etymology: The primary verbal noun μύλη (accent as e.g. μάχη) with the secondarily arising μύλος (after λίθος or ὄνος ἀλέτης?) like the primary yot-present μύλλω deviate through the υ-vowel from the other cognate words for `grind', which show an e: o-vocalism: Celt., OIr. melim, Slav., e.g. OCS meljǫ (IE * mel-); Germ., e.g. Goth. malan, Lith. malù, Hitt. 3. sg. mallai (IE * mol-); Lat. molō, on itself ambiguous, prob. from * melō like OIr. melim. In μυλ- we must assume a zero- [or reduced] grade variant (ml̥-; mel-?) (Schwyzer 351). With μύλλω from *ml̥-i̯ō agree in Germ. OHG muljan, OWNo. mylia `crush'; on the meaning s. below, on the υ -vowel cf. φύλλον against Lat. folium. A weak grade appears also in Welsh malu `grind', as well as in Arm. malem `crush'. An u-vowel could also be found in the reduplicated Arm. ml-ml-em `rub'; (it could however also be drived from lengthened grade mēl- or mōl). The technical meaning `grind' might have been specialized from the general `rub'. As verbal noun μύλη has in Greek the character of an archaism, while μύλλω, which was degraded to an obscene meaning, was further replaced by the also old ἀλέω (s.v. and Porzig Gliederung 156), which was limited to the eastern languages. -- On itself stands μάλευρον (s.v.); remarkable and\/but suspect is the e-vowel of Myc. mereuro `meal' and meretirija `milleresses'. -- More forms in WP. 2, 284ff., Pok. 716f., W.-Hofmann and Ernout-Meillet s. molō, Fraenkel Wb. s. málti.Page in Frisk: 2,268-270Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μύλη

3 μάρναμαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `fight, do battle' (Il.).Other forms: only present; ptc. βαρνάμενος through dissimilation.Etymology: The zerograde nasal present μάρ-να-μαι (Schwyzer 693) has an exact formal agreement in Skt. ipv. mr̥-ṇī-hí (*mr̥-nh₂-), with the thematic active mr̥ṇáti `crush' (diff. Thieme KZ 66, 233 n. 1: prop. `seize, grip, rob'; μάρναμαι originally from wrestling). If the etymology is at all correct (rejected by Pedersen IF 2, 294), μάρναμαι must originally have ment `crush one another, slay asunder'; a representant is supposed in μάρμαρος (s.v.). Semantically fits better Arm. mart `combat' (d-enlargement); the other words adduced like Germ., e.g. OWNo. meria `push away', Lat. mortārium, also morbus (W.-Hofmann s. vv., WP. 2, 278f., Pok. 735f.) learn nothing for Greek. -- An innovation beside μάρναμαι is μαραίνω, s.v.Page in Frisk: 2,177-178Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μάρναμαι

Ba. 633; = συμπέπτωκε H.);Derivatives: cf. also θρανεύεται συντρίβεται H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Relation to the noun *θραυσ-ανό-ς, from θραύω (Sütterlin Denom. 107, Solmsen Unt. 88), arouses, though theoretically possible, for this expressive word little confidence, cf. Sommer Lautstud. 64f. More probable seems ( pace Sommer l. c.), connection with θρανεύω `stretch on the tanner's bench', which H. glosses as συντρίβεται. So a change of meaning `tann (torture)' \> `crush' together with the formal transformation (after ἀμύσσω, νύσσω a. o.?, Sommer a. a. O., Debrunner IF 21, 243). 11 λικμάω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `part the grain from the chaff, winnow', metaph. `crush, destroy' (Ε 500, B., X., LXX, pap.).Other forms: aor. λικμῆσαι.Derivatives: λικμητηρ ́winnower', λικμητρίς `w. fan', also λικμήτωρ, - τής; - ητήριον `w. fan, shovel'; - ητὸς `winnowing, scatter'; - ητικός `belonging to w.'. λικμός, prob. backformation' w. fan', λικμαία surname of Demeter. λίκνον n. `w. fan' (Arist.), sacred basket with first-fruits in Demeter-cult' (S., AP; cf. Nilsson Gr. Rel. 1, 128; λικνοφόρος also `cradle' (h. Merc., Call.), λικνίτης surn. of Dionysos (Orph., Plu.; Redard 210, v, Wilamowitz Glaube 2, 376), - ὶτις ( τροφή S. Further from H. εὐ\<νί\> κμητο\<ν\> εὐλί\<κ\> μητον, ἀνικλώμενον ἀνακαθαιρόμενον (cf. on ἀνικμώμενα above) and the suffixless νικᾳ̃ λικμᾳ̃ ̃ νικεῖν (for - κᾶν?) λικμᾶν, νείκεσεν ἔκρινεν, εὐνικές εὐκρινές, νεικητήρ λικμητήρ. Μεγαρεῖς.Etymology: Popular word with variation of the form (as in popular words). If one may start from *νίκνον, *νικνᾶν, the forms λίκνον and νίκλον, prob. also νικμᾶν (in εὑνίκμητον) can be understood as dissimilated forms; further perhaps also λικμᾶν (on the formation Schwyzer 731) from νικμᾶν and, with loss of the anlaut, ἰκμᾶν, s. Bechtel Lex. s. λικμάω after Legerlotz KZ 8, 123f. and Schulze KZ 42. 380f. (= Kl. Schr. 58f.). Diff. on the variation μ:ν Schwyzer 338 (after J. Schmidt a. o.), on ἰκμᾶν J. Miletos). - If one starts from *νίκ-νον, we get an attractive connection with the fullgrade and derived Lith. niekóju, -óti `winnow (corn)', Latv. niẽkât `swing groats in a mill' (Bugge Curt. Stud. 4, 335 f.); cf. the suffixless Greek forms above. Also Celtic forms have been compared, e.g. Welsh nithio, Bret. niza `winnow'. Lith. liekúoti `winnow (corn)' and Latv. lìekša `shovel' have nohing to do with λικμάω (they are folksetymological tranormations after lìkti `remain behind'. - WP. 2, 321, Pok. 761, Fraenkel Wb. s. niekóti m.Page in Frisk: 2,122-123Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λικμάω

Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `knead (dough), press a plastic material in a form, strike, wipe off, pull, represent' (τ 92).Other forms: Att. μάττω, - ομαι, aor. μάξαι, - σθαι, pass. μαγῆναι, μαχθῆναι, perf. midd. μέμαγμαι, act. μέμαχα (Ar.).Derivatives: Many derivv. 1. ἐκμαγεῖον ( μαγεῖον Longin.) `mass, in which prints are made, offprint, mould, towel, serviette' (IA.). 2. μαγίς, - ίδος f. `kneaded mass, cake, kneading trough, dresser' (Hp., Com, S.). 3. μάγμα n. `kneaded mass, thick salve, smear' (pap., Plin.), ἔκ-, ἀπό-μαγμα `offprint, duster, wiped off dirt' (Hp., S., Thphr.), μαγμον τὸ καθάρσιον H. 4. ἔκ-, ἀνά-μαξις `wiping off' (Arist.). -- 5. μαγεύς m. `kneeader, baker, who wipes off' (Poll., AP, H.), prob. directly from verb (after Boßhardt 81 from *μαγή). 6. μακτήρ ἡ κάρδοπος, ἡ πυελίς. καὶ διφθέρα. καὶ ὀρχήσεως σχῆμα H. With auslaut. κ: μακαρία βρῶμα ἐκ ζωμοῦ καὶ ἀλφίτων H. -- On μᾶζα s. v.Etymology: For comparison we have words with final g, IE *maǵ-, esp. in Germanic and Baltoslavic, e.g. NHG machen, OS makōn `make, erect, build', if prop. `knead, form', OCS mažǫ, mazati `smear, salve'; further Celt., e.g. Bret. meza `knead'; uncertain Arm. macanim, macnum `stick fast, congeal'. On the other hand we find a final k with nasal, IE * menk-, in Lith. mìnkau, mánkau, - yti `knead a weak masse', OCS mǫka, Russ. muká `flour' and many other Baltoslavic words; from Germ. one might consider NHG mengen, OE mengan etc., if prop. `knead together'; from Skt. macate `crush etc.' (Dhātup.). Further there are a few longvowel words without nasal: Latv. màcu, màkt `press, plague' and Lat. māceria `wall)kneaded from loam'. -- Of the Greek word only the isolated μακαρία has a clear tenuis, as μάσσω (first from *μακ-ι̯ω) can be explained as a deviation. As however also μαγῆναι as well as the nominal γ-forms can be so explained (cf. Schwyzer 760), one can explain Greek if necessary with IE * menk. A suppletive system * menk (: μακαρία, μάσσω): maǵ-(: μαγῆναι) is conceivable -- WP. 2, 224, 226f., 268, Pok. 696f., 698, 730f., W.-Hofmann s. māceria, Fraenkel s. mìnkyti u. mė́šlas, Vasmer s. mázatь, muká, mjágkij; s. also Bq. - One retains some doubts however; note among other things the form - μαγδαλιά; further the supposed interchange * menk-: *meh₂ǵ- arouses suspicion.Page in Frisk: 2,180-181Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μάσσω
