To hold the line («держать линию») очень часто можно слышать во время телефонных разговоров. Эта фраза обозначает период ожидания, когда кто-либо на другом конце провода пытается соединить вас с нужным человеком или навести для вас справки: 'Mr Smith? I think he's in the workshop. Hold the line, please, and I'll try to put you through.' — «Мистер Смит? Я думаю, он в мастерской. Не кладите трубку, пожалуйста, я постараюсь вас соединить». Это же выражение используется в значении не сдаваться, держаться. В этом значении выражение пришло из военной сферы и относилось к первой линии обороны.
